I’m about to run the wires and install mine and this video has definitely given me the confidence to knock it out. I’m good with most electrical, but I’ve never installed a doorbell… most of the doorbell cameras I’ve installed either are able to hook up to the existing doorbell wiring or it’s just been wireless. And every thing inside a house . I have fixed a Germany Telephone. And was offered a Job with AT&T. Back in 1973 when they had a Strike. I told the man what it needed. And of course he work over a hour came inside and asked me to show him. I did and he was shocked! It took me all of 10 minutes. But l have early stage of Alzheimer’s. I’ve got a second question. I opened my light switch and there are only 2 wires. There’s no ground wire. Can I connect the transformer to the light switch even if it has no ground wire?

You could use a light switch but you should have a ground. I assume you have metal boxes - is the switch grounded to the box ? If yes - you can do the same with transformer…. But please double check everything and be careful.

I have 2 questions… #1, you used an existing live wire and then use a new wire to connect to the live one and then the live to the outlet and the new one to the transformer? I wish l could see how you made the connection 😬 im struggling to make sense out of it. #2 - have you have any problems with the outlet? Like if you plug a vacuum in it works fine?

Hi Alex. I’d watch it again and see the diagram in the beginning this has helped others with the same questions. All I did was run a wire from an outlet to the transformer. No issues with outlet, it’s drawing such a small amount(that’s why you need the transformer). Mike

You can buy separate or together. You install through app like you do any other ring device.

First off Thank you for being straight forward. Second you didn’t need a resistor ? I watched some other videos and online ring instructions says you should. Here’s my plan I have no chime or any type of wiring in my new home. So I’m planing on connecting to the light switch then put the transformer in the receptacle inside the wall ( I have no where to hide it) and cover it with a plane light switch cover. How’s that sound ? My only thing is I’m confused with the resistor part.

Need help. A ring doorbell transformer from an installation in the past that is hard wired in a bedroom closet is chirping consistently. Have eliminated smoke detectors. Apartment was remodeled previous to my moving in. There currently is a generic doorbell system in place. I have been told by Ring that it is impossible that transformer is chirping. Any idea what is causing this to happen?

Agree - transformers don’t chirp. I’d look at what chirping and google whatever model number or name that’s on it to identify what’s making the noise. Could be some sort of transformer what’s got a built in alarm ??? Maybe. If not used I’d just remove it.

Yes. You can buy a surveillance camera that is wireless and can be powered via a small solar panel. Ring has one but I believe you need to buy the solar panel separately. They have different models of cameras and one has LED lights which turn on upon detection. I just don't know how well those solar panels work at charging the battery. Or, how long that solar panel would last. Your other option is to buy a power adapter and all you gotta do is make a tiny hole to the exterior wall to run the wire and hook it up to the camera and then hook up the power adapter to your outlet and thats it. That's what I did once but unfortunately the power adapter died lol.

I’m confused. You hook 12 gauge wire to the transformer but what is the 14/2 gauge wire for? Did you hook the bell wire to the transformer and run that to the ring doorbell? Also, if I wanted to hook up a doorbell ringer would I use bell wire?

you use 12/2 or 14/2 depending on circuit your tapping power off. see diagram in beginning of video. *used 14/2 in intro before i realized the circuit needed 12.

Didn’t install an outlet. Just tapped power off the outlet to get 120. Id rewatch, it’s in there. Also, explained it in the beginning… Mike

I’ve never seen a smaller transformer, but it might exist. Usually goes somewhere out of sight, so it’s really not that big.

Personal preference. The plug in option is really a work around but works. I rather have it hard wired in. Plug can be pulled out, plus you’ll see the wires, ect…. But it definitely a safe option. Mike

My ring doorbell came with a plug and I was surprised. No video I watched talks about it. I initially was going to hire an electrician to wire it up because I thought you had to go through this process. Just going to drill a hole into my garage from the front door and plug it into a socket for now.

Hey man, I really appreciate your video. Very easy to follow along with and informative. I do have a question. Once I hooked up all the wiring, I had no power to the ring doorbell. Could this be due to the fact that I cut the doorbell wires while they were charged and they sparked? That is the only thing I can think. Maybe the transformer blew when I did that? Because I am getting zero power when everything is hooked up and I am reading 120 V before the transformer.

You should be getting around 12volts on the screws side of the transformer… if you’re getting zero. I assume the transformer is jacked !

Use the size wire used in the circuit you’re tapping off of. In general if breaker is 15 amp, 14 gauge wire is used. But double check your specific scenario

Maybe put the transformer in a closet or next to electrical panel. Then run bell wire from transformer to the door bell. Yes- still could be a tone of work. But if you have attic, might not be to bad. Pop up …. Then back down.
