love this clip. I didnt need it as you tought me for 2 years but its good to see you have moved with the times and brought your knowledge to the web. Congratulations with the books as well I remember you were writing the testing one in my last year. Adam

Thanks a lot, same here. Also do you know where it is he gets the cables from that he tests on? The 3 phase has just got too much going on it hurts my head lol. I can't make out where it is he takes them from.

Does this do the polarity and the earth continuity for you as well or do you still have to do them seperatly?

Hi, we don't use ring circuits for lighting in the uk, all ciruits are radial with the exception of 13A ring final circuits used for power . A standard domestic lighting circuit would be 6A with around 10 outlets as a rule of thumb

Yes video a great help, final level 3 exams on Thursday and Friday so has helped a great deal... Yes it does do polarity also and I'm sure it would also cover continuity of CPC as it is basically the same test, only incorporating the whole ring as apposed to just the CPC alone. I am not qualified just yet though so anyone feel free to correct me if i am wrong!

testing between line and earth with fig 8 loop at db is a required test to confirm polarity at socket outlets

I'm a Level 2 student so let's discuss :P Continuity of CPC verifies that the earth wire is connected securely so that fault current can flow to earth rather than through you under fault condition. I think polarity is only confirmed when switching the furthest load on during the continuity test as THAT would be proof that the circuit is continuous all the way around and back to the CCU. The other continuity tests are end to end (L1-L2 and N1-N2), L1--E2, L2--E1, L1--N2, L2--N1.

Hi, thanks for the vid. Really helping me prepare for my practical exam as a Level 2 electrical installations student. However, I have to point something out about the testing probes you used for that three-phase 415V system; when you went to 'prove' it was dead and the lights hadn't failed during testing, the 415V light did not turn on when you inserted the probes in the proving unit. Check about 1:40 into the video. Shouldn't that set of probes be replaced?

If you put the live conductor into the earth bar (separate screw terminal though), that will give you continuity and then polarity if you switch on the furthest load to prove it's correctly connected right the way through...

on your safe isolation test you only checked between earth and line 1 you should have tested all 3 phases surely?Could have a faulty main switch or circuits from another board could have gotten mixed up back feeding into your board

Can someone explain in the simplest form? In the video when he starts explaining the cross connection and he has the tape around the Neutral and Live because he already knows which socket they lead into. If you didn't know which socket they went into then how would you figure it out? Thank you guys,
@JackLlewhellin
@JackLlewhellin 8 жыл бұрын
+unrepentant celt you would have to find the two ends of the ring final as they come into the board, this should be fairly easy 'cause they are in the c/b just follow the cores back. :)

But in the proving unit, regardless of the reading on the three-phase board, all four lights should still light up to prove the instrument didn't fail. What if in the future there was a 400V delta connection he was testing? That would be a dangerous miscalculation. Thanks for the first response though, I'm trying to learn through inquisition ;)

What he has basically done is the continuity if a Ring main circuit End to end is the quick way but anyone in college doing electrics will tell you that you need to do the so called figure of 8 test which he doe's where the phase (live) off one 2.5mm cable goe's into the neutral of the other 2.5mm cable and visa versa hence figure of 8 the results should only be read from the furthest away socket hence highest resistence reading then divide by 4 to get the resitance reading. this importent when filling out your test sheets. Radial is quite straight forward just the R1+R2 where phase wire connects to the earth

ok 3 phase 400V is the line voltage between any of the lines ie (L1 and L2 or L2 and L3) the 230V is between any of the Lines and the neutral which is like you home only 1 line comes in with the neutral and earth. Each of the 3 single Lines are 230V dont get confused people Line and phase are different. Line is the permanent supply phase is not. Phase is the live off each circuit created. To get the voltage of each single phase from a 400V 3 phase system you divide 400 by 1.73 should give you around 230V simples :)

testing between line and neutral at socket with fig 8 loop on L and N at db does not give you a polarity confirmation
@chriskitcher
@chriskitcher 9 жыл бұрын
You are correct, however using the figure of 8 loop between L and N and then between L and E will confirm polarity.

+RAITHWILSON123 OK then can you expand on that and explain what does give a confirmation of polarity on a ring final circuit?
@chriskitcher
@chriskitcher 8 жыл бұрын
If L & N are connected around the wrong way the L to E test will show as open circuit. If N & E are connected around the wrong way the L to N test will show as open circuit. If L & E are connected around the wrong way then L & N test will show as open circuit. Hope this helps

Why is it necessary to disconnect the whole board to do a test on a single final circuit?
@cjmillsnun
@cjmillsnun 8 жыл бұрын
because you're disconnecting conductors from a MCB with potentially no RCD (depending on the age of the CU). Personally I like circuits dead before I disconnect them.

You failed one minute in!! You need to test between all live conductors and earth, neutral is deemed as a live conductor and as that is a three-phase installation you should have tested L1 to N, L2 to N, L3 to N, L1 to earth, L2 to earth, L3 to earth, L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L1 to L3. Any isolator is more than capable of failing to open all its poles and I have seen it in the past!

just let your RcD do the testing for you much cheaper than buying expensive meters ,,, turn the power off find an old plug and make an internal connection between earth and N ,,, switch the power back on ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if the rcd doesnt work (switch off ),,,,,,,,, call on electrician ,

The cutting of that plastic conduit was the most painful thing I’ve ever watched, also the fixing of a clip to plasterboard with a 40mm wood screw no plug is questionable, your teaching people here the amount of information you can portray via video is limitless fixing of conduit is probably more relevant than most of the jargon he’s talking about , teach someone why not how ……😮
