In today's video, Bruce and Sam are deciding which Ring Modulation pedal is worthy of the Mighty Golden Pedal Board! They are comparing the "Green Ringer" by Dan Armstrong and LovePedal's "Believe".
Welcome our new show "Board Or Bin" where we test pedals against one another, in order to get the ultimate guitar tone and build the Golden Pedal Board.
Only one of these pedals will make it to our mighty Golden Board. The other one will go in the bin.

they were designed to be plugged in the amp, obviously not in the guitar

So the GR form factor is pants (whether plugged into an amp or the guitar) - but this review is essentially comparing a Green Ringer in an entirely impractical form with, er, a Green Ringer clone. They sound pretty similar, which isn't a great surprise as they are the same circuit, potentially barring a few tweaks to component values. There are many varieties of octaver out there and it would make more sense to compare the different circuits that people use. As a comment on BB's post, one way of creating an octave up is to multiply a signal by itself (multiply in the time domain is equivalent to adding in the frequency domain - add a frequency to itself and you get double the frequency, i.e. an octave). The Green Ringer does this with a pair of diodes - ring modulators (classic analogue ring modulators, that is) use a pair of transformers and a ring of diodes to multiply the input signal with a carrier signal, typically from a low frequency oscillator (LFO) - replace the LFO with the input signal and you have an octaver (of a sort). That is why the sound of a Green Ringer is considered similar to a ring mod. Other types exist though - octave up is pretty easy: rectify a sine wave and you end up with a signal that has more 2nd harmonic (octave up) than fundamental. Octave down is always much harder. What would be more useful is a comparison of how the different approaches to creating the 2nd harmonic vary from design to design, as this will have a correspondingly more significant impact on the sound of the pedal...

The original green ringer was designed to be plugged into your amp., not your guitar.

Liking these Board or Bin clips. Any chance you can do a video on the small Cornell plexi heads?

He absolutely needs to, they are wicked. BUT! Me and Bruce did a video with his BIG Cornell heads (I think the Plexi Pro 45/50 Head?) in a video on 'How to record rock guitars' in the studio, which is here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/goe6f2OXrLGIj9k and it was great fun!

Turning down the tone control on the neck pickup gives a better result with the Green Ringer.

I always wondered what the "dongle" version sounded like - that is actually a killer classic tone that is pretty fuzzy as well - it reminds me of the guitar tone from "Magic Man" by Heart

Just to summarise what you did here: You "threw away" a vintage Dan Amstrong Green Ringer but advertised a digital Mooer Reecho "pedal" ...eh ...well...ok?... Please see a doctor. Oh and sell me all your waste.

Of course there are more authentic clones of the green ringer, ( and easy DIY builds) that have normal pedal box housing..Green Ringer all the way

Yeah, he shouldn't have designed it for front jack guitars. Big design oversight. I'm that guy who's gonna correct you! :D that's actually a reissue, but for all intents and purposes, YES, that is the original design. I'll take that one you threw in the bin! Lol both are cool. I prefer the og

I don't think they had 3PDT stomp switches when the Green Ringer was made. The concept of Foot Pedals just wasn't quite there yet. OTOH, what Love Pedal was thinking with putting the jacks on the face of the pedal... I have no idea.

But isn't this the analog way to make an octave up? It sounds way more like a octaver then a ringmod.
