Having 35 years experience with Hornby model trains. Whenever I hear that wheezing squeaking noise on a Hornby and a Lima model train. That tells me right away that the spindle on the motor is dry and needs oil asap. Just simple things like this keep them going happy for a while and the oil will last for about 6 months on average use at around 2-3 hours a day based on my model trains. I love these older model trains for their ease of fixing and I enjoy the hobby. Peter.

Glad you got them fixed. Sometimes it looks so obvious after the event. I have been in a similar situation. You can get replacement pinion gears. Mine was going nowhere with the motor spinning. A new gear on the motor shaft cured it. Thanks for sharing your fix. Cheers Paul.

A drop of good oil on these armature shafts works miracles. True for XO$, Dublo motors and all the other motors you can think of. Too much oil can destroy the brushes.

No, you are not silly! Got that: not silly! I had a Hornby RF motor and noticed the spigots that formed the gear mounts wore 'oval'. Have you noticed this? Time did not allow to modify. It is just possible that they had assumed a 'worn configuration which can last for years and years. Hornby RFs are an interesting subject. As they say in journalism 'One X0-4 is worth a thousand Ringfields'. Just wondering?

Very easy to miss that but I did wonder if you'd oiled the bearings where the shafts rotate in the motor housing it is a very common thing to happen. I'm also a firm believer in keeping the motors as original as possible and you can get ring fields running quite sweet.
@shedmouthjunction Жыл бұрын
Hi Gareth, yep I'm totally with you when it comes to originality (unlike Evie who sees everything as a blank canvas for her creativeness😂😂 . I'm so pleased I could keep them as Hornby intended.

Martin, just put it out there...most of us know. They used to have felt pads one side or sintered bearings but they went cheap and did away with them. So they squeal like pigs. Keeping a felt pad oiled was easy but it all got lost to cost cutting. 3in1 oil is not plastic compatible, get some Labelle 108 or similar which is made for our hobby. ATB, Andy.

Hi Andy! You see this is why im loving this hobby. Good people like yourself mate are always there to point newcomers in the right direction... i never knew that about the oil ! I'll get some compatible oil on order. Thanks Andy! Very much appreciated. All the very best. Martin
@michaelcudby787 Жыл бұрын
Yes sir., agree totally. 3in1 was originally made , I think, by Singer sewing machines. We used to use it in our Marklin locos, years ago,& found that putting it on the gears( similar to the ringfield) the oil would simply not stay on the gears, making one hell of a mess everywhere, & doing absolutely nothing to protect the gears from wearing out.The beauty of todays oils, is that.....1 they are usually, plastic compatable... & 2 it clings to the gearing 90% of the time, thereby doing its job. Since then, with over 300 locos ( American ) I do not have worn out gear issues. Insist on the correct oil. It is so easy these days Thanks Michael NZ

I wonder if the bearing is worn though? The oil will quieten it down, but if it’s opened up the hole then it’s still lolloping around more that it should. Seem to recall some people opening up the hole and sleeving it with a section of copper tube.

@shedmouthjunctionАй бұрын
Ahhh so sorry I have missed your comment, I have been away from youtube for a few months. Firstly thank you for watching the video! I really appreciate it. With regards to the tender, on these locos there were just some really small screws holding them on but it can change from loco to loco.

Dont worry mate weve all done something thats thee easiest to fix and missed something easy to get them all going good again. I used to use a big large tray to fix all my carriages then started getting adventurous to start fixing locos as a part of the hobby. I fixed cleaned oiled this old 37 class that id bought off ebay and the seller said it had a squeal to it and was half the reason it was soo cheap. So I thought ahh what the heck ,, why not get it. Anyhoo 2 weeks pass to get from England to Australia opens it up it and its in really good nick condition wise but he was right it had a terible squeel so went to work on it. Pulled it apart brushes spotless commutator perfect had hardly been used so i got my trusty alligator clips onto the loco on its side and oiled the main pinnion shaft from both sides sqeel gone bybys & sounded great & run like a clock. So i sits it in the upright position on my tray and appied power and instanly tripped out the power and red light on the controller come on ,, I thought hmm thats odd why was it working 2 seconds ago and now its not so turned it on its side and hey presto it went like the clappers again. So I put it back on its wheel and power tripped yet again. I thought ahh bugger it ,, I'll pull it down again to see what is wrong with it but thought no I'll give it 1 more try on it side and the put it on its wheels. Well as i did this the tray i put the loco down on sparked and it stopped agin. This issue had me going for at least 10 to 15 minutes just to finally realise that the tray i was working on was an old aluminium baking tray and was earthing out on the alloy tray... I felt soo dumb but it really was a good learning kerb for me as i have done it a couple of times and now i use my mums old stable table which is made out of plastic and dosent conduct. Things we learn hey. When you first said high pitched squeel i said straight up that the pinnion gear just needs a drop of oil on each side of the main pinninon gear. I've fixed many a loco from squealing this way and you will know in the future to give it a wee drop of oil not too much as it will fly out and get all over the commutator and make it run poorly. Anyhoo good to see you or your tekko m8 had fixed it hahaha Cheers from John in Australia.

Hello John, Please accept my apologies for my lateness in responding to your message, and thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, i really enjoyed reading all about it! Our experiences just go to show that every day is a learning day 😂 and sometimes we can try so hard that 'we can't see the wood for the trees' as they say. Quite often at work, my colleague and I will will ask each other to cast an eye over something if we have a problem or to confirm a fault, just as a second pair of eyes. Countless times one of us will be totally stumped by a fault only for the the other one to spot it instantly! 😂 Thank you so much again John, Your time and support are very much appreciated. Kind regards Martin

Right then... the answer here is... It's not easy.😂 rumour has it a pinion puller is needed for the job as its an 'interference fit'. Without the puller, it's a challenge to which there is no specific answer or method. Now then, after speaking to Jeremy, i had a look on youtube and found this from 'Sam's Trains' if you skip to 6 mins in the video, he seems to knock it through with a small punch and hammer.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ-8YaF5qZymhbc Sorry i couldn't be more help.

Thanks but that excersize was to remove the armature including shaft and cog with tge intent of replacing it with a CD drive. What I am trying to do is to place a NEW brass cog onto the shaft.

You're welcome, same applies to wd40 great on the mower but it's primarily a water displacer hence WD There are lot's of penetrating oils out there a whole lot better. To clean off hard oil and grease I use Servisol in a spray can which is an electrical switch cleaner. Having found out the hard way, why would I let you suffer the same fete. ATB, Andy.

What type of oil should I use for this?
@shedmouthjunction8 ай бұрын
Hello. All i had at the time was some basic 3-in-1 oil. However, ive since been advised against using it for various reasons. So I now use a specific bearing oil that we use in RC car racing. There are lots of theories about oil types and what is good or bad on these motors... im not sure what is right or wrong to be honest, as everyone had a different opinions when i researched it on line. Personally, in my opinion, a decent bearing oil will work just fine.
