Ringing the bell at The Parish Church of St. James, Avebury

The Parish Church of St. James, Avebury is situated right at the heart of the famous Stone Circles attraction. This was my first experience ringing the bell located up in the church tower.

The chime before he pulled was the clock and the rope was only a rope attached to a clapper of the chiming bell.

I bet the guy thought he made both of those bells ring, the heavier of the two that strike once is the old Phelps bell striking 1 o'clock.....

I lived in the village for 10 years and I lived in it when that man came to visit I was a bell ringer there and I tell you that the reason that bell sally was dusty is that the bell shaft and the clapper and the stay have all broken and if he had pulled it a bit harder he would have pulled the bell out of the tower! All the other 8 bells where fine, I rang the 5.

I’ve visited that church twice and the top part makes me feel very ill, I swear there’s something very oppressive up there
