George was always very helpful to Ringo. For me, Ringo's 'Photograph' is the one that I feel is his best. At the time, Ringo was actually doing better on the charts than the other three. It didn't last long, but it seemed like a Ringo song was always coming over the radio.

It Don't Come Easy was a major radio and sales hit for Ringo Starr. George Harrison wrote this for Ringo, and indeed, George Harrison played the chiming, arpeggiated guitars and did the arrangements, and played that elegant, soaring, and questing guitar solo, a classic Harrison lead. Ringo sang it with heart and presence and a surprising gravitas, world-weary and knowing--an elegy and wise hymn of hope vis-à-vis the just broken-up Beatles and the end of the revolutionary 1969s. A fantastic riff, and one whose themes resonate still.

Dial back to 1965 and listen to ACT NATURALLY which I consider his first 'good' one... he had others but they were all pretty shoddy songs in the first place. George's guitar work on ACT NATURALLY rivals the best from American country music at the time, and Ringo's vocals are superior to the original singer's.

I graduated high school in 1978. At my 35th class reunion, a few musical classmates and I threw together a band to entertain the old classmates. We worked up 16 songs, all from the 70s. The only artist we did two songs by was Ringo. We played "Photograph" and "The No No Song". I've also seen Ringo and His All-Star Band perform a few times with people like Peter Frampton, Michael MacDonald and other superstars. They played Ringo's hits as well as the best songs by the other musicians. It was always fun! Also check out, "Act Naturally" and "You're 16".

I remember this song all over the radio when it came out. IMHO, Ringo is vastly under-rated as a drummer with the Beatles. His drumming fit into the Beatles sound perfectly. He was playing a percussion instrument, not just a crash and bang noise maker. He wasn't a featured soloist, i.e. Keith Moon, but an irreplaceable, integrated part of the genius four men produced in an all too short eight years.

I play this one a lot on a 70's playlist and when younger members of my family hear it for the first time they love it too, and when I tell them who it is I get the same response as yours. If your staying with Ringo check out "Photograph ", I think you'll like that too. Rock on Harri.

Written and produced by George. It Don't Come Easy reached #4 for 3 weeks in the UK in May 1971. Ringo's biggest hit in the UK was 'Back off Boogaloo' which reached #2 in 1972. Ringo had more success in America scoring 2 #1 singles - 'Photograph' and 'You're Sixteen' In 1973/4. This equalled John Lennon who also had 2 American #1 singles, one of them posthumous.

Always loved this song.. a Beatles fan from the beginning. Ringo's amazing drum fills are great to hear on this, since I too started playing the drums about 5 years ago, finally. He is a left handed drummer playing on a right handed kit, so one of those first fills he goes backwards from the traditional fills, and that would be hard for right handed drummers to do. Gives him a unique feel.

I lead with my left hand too when I fill only because I use a mallet in my left hand and a power stick in my right. So I like to lead with mallet (left hand, like ringo). My friends say I have a ringo feel. I also play behind the beat (I’m not a drummer tho, I just play one on my records)

Ringo is the master of playing “inside the song”. He plays what supports the song. Critics have argued that because he is not flashy and prone to drum solos that he’s not a great drummer. My counter is this: name one drummer you can think of that you could talk all of the music away from the song, leaving only the drum track, and you immediately recognize the song! The only drummer that I’ve ever heard that can do this is Ringo when he was with the Beatles! There is a video out which has a lot of contemporary drummers in it who all take turns playing parts of Ringo’s drumming in Beatles songs, and with just the drums, all of these guys show you the understated genius of Ringo as a drummer. After the Beatles broke up, he’s the only former Beatle who played on each of the other former Beatles’ solo albums. Furthermore, if you look at the most successful of the solo albums of the former Beatles, their best albums ALWAYS had Ringo playing on them! He was the glue that held the Beatles together before and after the breakup!

“Octopus Garden” and “In Liverpool”was written by Ringo Starr. In my opinion these are also excellent songs he wrote. Of course, “It don’t come easy” and “Photograph”are classics that were produced with George Harrison. The "B" side of that single "It Don't Come Easy" is a very interesting track "Early 1970". It is Ringo's take on the status of the relationships within the ex-Beatles and a musing on his own place in the band. It featured John and George in the performances, as well. And is a charming and humorous piece. As others have said, It Don't Come Easy was a collaboration with George.

I'll add a vote for Photograph , loved the Ringo album . There's a great Paul song : 6 O'clock and a John song : I'm The Greatest (I think , haven't heard it in decades ) .

Harry, really like your channel!! George played guitar on this track and helped Ringo write it, but was uncredited.

I think everyone underestimates Ringo, even Beatlemaniacs, until you really listen to him.

In the immediate post Beatles era Ringo had some of the better singles. This is partly written by George I think.

I'm not sure, but his biggest solo hit could be his 1973 cover of "You're 16". Maybe also "Photograph". A nice song. He probably did his most interesting vocal performance with the Beatles on the rock'n'roll cover of "Boys" (The Shirelles). One of his live-songs in Beatles-shows. In 1973 he managed a quasi-Beatles reunion, when he was able to win over all band colleagues to work on a few songs for his quite good album "Ringo". However, he also produced some really terrible albums in the 70s / 80s, before he found a way with the "Ringo Starr All-Starr Band" to put on pretty good live shows with well-known musicians.
