You are so lucky living where humans have been manufacturing artifacts for a couple thousand years. I live on the West Coast of the US. YOU, find a Roman coin, or a 15th century artifact and say: (me trying, but failing miserably to imitate a British accent) “Oh that’s quite nice isn’t it?” And go on about your day. ME, I find a 1955 Penny with my metal detector and scream: “Woo Hoo!” Do a 10 minute victory dance and show everyone I can see, whether or not they care; (I get some pretty strange looks and the odd occasion where the police are called).

Nicky L - Yes, you are right, there ARE some interesting sites I can search, my best find ever is a Spanish 4 Reale piece (silver coin) from an old trading post dated 1732. I theorize it was dropped in the late 18th century (out in the desert). I have also found a Native American stone bowl, which a university investigated and said it could be anywhere from 800 to 2,000 years old, so there IS stuff to find. But compared to this river, they are few and far between. Nicole walks 100 yards and finds artifacts from 50 to 2,000 years old, I AM JEALOUS!!!!!

We both developed a fascination for the old clay pipes as well and found on Etsy there are alot of folks who carry on the tradition of making them in that very style. Take a peek, they're also very cheap even foe the long or detailed ones. And you're also supporting a small business and keeping a tradition alive.

I Loved the goose intro to this video Nicola! The Thames is a historical treasure trove to say the least! Have you ever wondered what amazing artifacts may be waiting in the mud beneath the water? It truly is a record from the earliest days to our plastic present. Having experience with metal detecting, dump rooting for bottles and scanning beaches, banks fields and abandon basements and attics, I am all too aware of the bucket of trash found for every treasure. And also the importance of ridding the search field of such rubble. The ring that Mike found? What a treasure and what a terrible time it represents. And Thanks to your fellow Larkers as well, Mike Matt and that famous Bottle Cutting Mud Lover Luck inna Mucker himself, Si Finds! Did they pay you to include them? I mean after all, you are the Pipe Queen of the River Thames! I also find it interesting that so many pieces of pottery and china have figures of people or animals. In finding things myself over the years and digging hole when detecting, I'd find the most interesting non metallic objects like, clay marbles and pottery shards. I also found, just as a side note, that I'd have better luck with my detector when around the full moon. The moon creates tides and apparently better signals with metal objects. So now I request that you all find gold coins and other historical golden objects this summer to make up for the restricted days lost. It would only be fair to your fans, eh? In the meantime, Grand Things in the Mud and Muck on the shores of the River of Luck and Love, Light and Peace of course! DaveyJO in Pa.
