I was really confused by the crossing of the 180-line in the scene on the ice. I think they did that at again several times in other scenes as well. I was told that these jumps are normally not desirable as they are confusing, but sometimes used on purpose. I just couldn’t come up with a good reason for the use of such jump here. Thanks again for this detailed and interesting analysis! I learned a lot and enjoyed - that mind sound strange - the calm atmosphere your videos have. (I think another commenter wrote something similar below the first RoP Video.) Keep it up! :)

I hope my following comment doesn't upset the creator of this channel but it brakes my heart seeing you investing time and effort into this topic. as normal folks i can say the majority of us viewers don't care about Rings of Power let alone it's cinematography, it didn't do anything new or ground-braking, we have seen these cgi shots everywhere millions of times in every single movie that came out in last 10 years.

Hey absolutely get that, I think what is interesting here is that there is a pedigree that this series is coming from and a broader lexicon of work that it exists in at the moment within the streaming platforms and the huge sums they are putting into creating these series. So I’ll be going onto compare this to the OG lord of the rings and also the current crop of ‘fantasy’ epic series such as GoT/house of the dragon. I also find it interesting to look at why things can feel bland/uninspiring, as it’s something I’d aspire to avoid 😬

IMO... when things get too highly manicured shot after shot, the shots that should stand out as somewhat awe inspiring just comes across as bland... backlighting every shot and having the talent constantly fall into exactly the right key light just makes it even more unrealistic (appreciated it is a Fantasy) and obviously 95% shot in studio..

You’re definitely onto something, I’ve been feeling that compared to House of the Dragon for example the look of Rings of Power seems less assured, leaning to stylised but lacking the absolute confidence to pull it off. Now HotD isn’t perfect but cinematography wise it feels more like it knows what it’s doing. (I write from my arm chair….)

So watched a few episodes and the cinematography in RoP isn't as constantly vomit inducing as I thought and I kind of got into it... Obv still looking pretty amature compared to HoTD....

The light work in this series is absolute horror. Brightness at max. No atmosphere...especially the cave hahaha... The Masters are in the House of Dragons... but they've been holding the line there since GoT. A billion has been thrown for the rings and in some cases it looks like a Bollywood set

The lighting in the Númenor scenes is especially atrocious. It's not only disappointing but saddening. The writing is bad but at least the show could've looked good, instead the cinematography is just a jumbled mess. It doesn't make me feel like I'm in a fantasy world, rather an overly produced ad for a product that ultimately fails. The only redeemable qualities about this show are the music and CGI.
