For the modern audience that is confused by our reaction to this abomination, it is because The Lord of the Rings is beloved. Because Tolkien is beloved. When those millions return mockery in kind, you probably shouldn't be that confused.

And it essayed to drown the other music by the violence of its voice, but it seemed that its most triumphant notes were taken by the other and woven into its own solemn pattern".

What's even more hilarious/disgusting about the "character" of Estrid is that she's pretty much toxic-femininity embodied... and neither the show nor the writers ever address it. Let's recap: - She almost immediately wants to jump Isildur's bones after stabbing him, despite supposedly searching for her 'husband' - Actively lies to Isildur multiple times - Once reunited with her husband who's shown to be a caring man who is quite literally trying to build a life for them... expresses disgust of him, outright declaring herself as "feeling sick" at his expressions of love for her, all so she can monkey-branch to Isildur because he's Numenorean nobility and has running water in his home. - Is ultimately stuck with her "disgusting" husband who has the gall to break his back actively building a home and a life for her, very obviously upset at having to remain with such an unqualified man as her upgrade, Isildur, has a rare moment of masculinity and basically says "Begone thot!" Even for this show, her "character" was honestly revolting and I can't really decide whether the writers are honestly so lacking in morals and principles that they thought she was a good character... or if they know full well just how revolting she is but put her in anyways in an attempt to appeal to modern western female viewers who they likely believe would greatly relate to such a vile character... and unfortunately they may be right if the later is the case.

I just finished re-reading The Lord of the Rings, there’s a funny bit at the end concerning the Three Rings. In the last chapter “The Grey Havens” the rings are described. Galadriel’s ring, Nenya, was stated as “the ring wrought of mithril”. Elrond’s ring is gold too. Now, why would Professor Tolkien specify the difference of material? It seems as though mithril wasn’t a core component of the rings, but rather a secret method of crafting similar to how the crafted items of the Elves are “magical” due to how they were created rather than what they were made of. Something mentioned in Fellowship when they asked if certain items were magical, the chapter Farewell to Lórien has a short discussion on the robes. Even the elves say they can show Sam how to make the rope that can be loosened at will. Just looking at the appendices, Professor Tolkien conveniently gave us a timeline with the year of when everything happened, which the show runners ignored…
@SurnaturalMАй бұрын
That's my understanding of the rings too, the metals themselves aren't magic, whatever it might be. It's the sorcery and probably the ritual held when they were made which made them magic. This is ridiculous that we have to say it.
@GideonRavenor712Ай бұрын
Exactly on both counts. Mithril was never stated as a key component of making the Rings, it was Sauron's knowledge being a very powerful Maia formerly under the Craftsman Vala Aule, which was the key factor. Not that the Rings couldn't be made of Mithril, but that it wasn't the main factor of making them Rings of Power. It's why the Elven Rings were different. Celebrimbor made them separately from Sauron's direct input, but he still used Sauron's knowledge of HOW to make the Rings to create them. But it was a big enough difference to make the effects of the Elven Rings' control over their bearers, greatly muted. Though all of the Bearers immediately took their Rings off and hid them after he put on the One. Nor does Mithril have any "anti-corruption" properties, that was made up for the show, along with it's "Origin". I always figured Mithril was always in Khazad-Dum as Aule's 'gift' to his children (Since Durin the Deathless saw it as divine providence for him to settle the Dwarves there, and the Dwarves were Aule's creation), and similarly when Numenor was created as the 'gift' to the descendants of the Edain, Aule threw some there as well as part of his portion of creating the island. And yea, you'd think for how much Amazon spent to buy the rights to use the appendices, they'd use the Tale of Years as guide stones . . . but no, they can't be bothered to give us a year and desperately want to rush the Fall of Numenor, the awakening of Durin's Bane, and the entire timeline of the Second Age into being only a few years when it should be spanning THOUSANDS.

@englishlady9797Ай бұрын
The biggest liberty they took is saying Galadriel got her magical powers from Nenya. Tolkien was very, very clear that Rings did not work like that. They couldn't convey powers that the wearer didn't already have, only enhance those they did have. And what was that garbage about Sauron being about to see into her mind at the end of Episode 8? He could only see into the Elves minds when he had the One Ring, which *hasn't been made yet*.
@justforever9621 күн бұрын
I don't remember him saying anything like that in the books. He doesn't give many clear instructions at all. Are you saying that the Ring only made hobbits invisible because they are already skilled at staying unseen and that wouldn't happen with anyone else? I definitely don't remember him saying anything like that. I do remember him saying that it wasn't a magical ability they had, it was just a thing they were skilled at. So if you are a skilled carpenter, and you get a ring you become the most skillful carpenter ever? And I guess the Wraiths were all originally very talented at smelling people out and screaming and instilling fear in people? That sounds like someones fan theory, not something Tolkien "very clearly said".
@englishlady979720 күн бұрын
@@justforever96 Oh dear. Someone hasn't read their Tolkien: this is from the foreword of the Silmarillion, originally one of Tolkien's letters. "The chief power (of all the rings alike) was the prevention or slowing of decay (i.e. ‘change’ viewed as a regrettable thing), the preservation of what is desired or loved, or its semblance - this is more or less an Elvish motive. But also they enhanced the natural powers of a possessor - thus approaching ‘magic’, a motive easily corruptible into evil, a lust for domination. And finally they had other powers, more directly derived from Sauron (‘the Necromancer’: so he is called as he casts a fleeting shadow and presage on the pages of The Hobbit): such as rendering invisible the material body, and making things of the invisible world visible" Tolkien, J. R. R.. The Silmarillion (p. 2). HarperCollins Publishers. Also of Galadriel he said this: "forget. From her earliest years she had a marvellous gift of insight into the minds of others, but judged them with mercy and understanding, and she withheld her goodwill from none save only Fëanor" Tolkien, J. R. R.. Unfinished Tales (p. 222). In other words Galadriel's ability to see into people's minds was evident from before even The First Age and *long* before she got Nenya. That thing about Nazgul sniffing and screeching is from the movies. You're seriously trying to take something from the movies as "proof" Rings of Power is lore accurate?

How This Show Was Made A group of spoiled, useless rich kids were brought-on by nepotism to direct this show. They hired a bunch of nervous actors based on DEI and key performance indicators. Half the budget was pocketed by the unnamed. The other half went towards two-take recording sessions that had more DEI hires than Starbucks. The DEI's were too few and untrained to spot problems with continuity. Anyone during the interviews who admitted to reading the Tolkien books were rejected. The production team only wanted wastrels and those who don't ask questions. The final product is this failure of a TV show. The fans pointed out all the flaws. They ticked down the score cards. But there might have been a chance for them to look the other way. The fans might have held on because, after all, it's Tolkien's work. Turns out, two seasons later and none of the source material was respected. The fans who voiced their disappointment were met with backlash - being told they were racist, misogynist basement dwellers. The fandom pushed back, got in front of their cameras and spoke how they felt. Once the word got out, this show and its future seasons became doomed. Even if there is a third season, even if it is much better than this year, the story is tarnished and any Lord of the Rings show going forward will be met with harsh criticism. Perhaps Amazon will learn a lesson from this sorry excuse of a show and we can move on to better things.

@justforever9621 күн бұрын
I was always a little baffled by that statement of his. It's hard to believe that none of his writing was meant to be allegory of any kind. At least he must have known that it wild be extremely easy to read meaning he didn't intend into it. I almost think he had some inspiration in real events but just didn't want to get drawn into the arguments and politics and so he's just like "nope, no allegory, Sauron had nothing to do with Hitler, the Scouring of the Shire has zero relationship with industrialism or communism vs capitalism, no comment". Because the symbolism is definitely there if you are looking for it. He was saying something by having them cut down trees and build ugly mills and factories and smoke stacks, replacing the peaceful old rural coexistence of the hobbits with a repressive gang of thugs who centralize their labor and seize all their produce for "redistribution" that didn't happen. It's hard to believe he didn't have _anything_ specific in mind with all that.
