Correction: The Raven said Nevermore. This is actually even more fitting for the story. The man is tortured by the idea that he will never see Lenore again. ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore- While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “ ’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door- Only this and nothing more.” Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow;-vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow-sorrow for the lost Lenore- For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore- Nameless here for evermore. And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me-filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating “ ’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door- Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; This it is and nothing more.” Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer, “Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, That I scarce was sure I heard you”-here I opened wide the door;- Darkness there and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore!” This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!”- Merely this and nothing more. Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning, Soon again I heard a tapping something louder than before. “Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice; Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore- Let my heart be still a moment, and this mystery explore;- ’Tis the wind and nothing more.” Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore. Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he, But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door- Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door- Perched, and sat, and nothing more. Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, “Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven, Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore- Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!” Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly, Though its answer little meaning-little relevancy bore; For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door- Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door, With such name as “Nevermore.” But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour. Nothing further then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered- Till I scarcely more than muttered: “Other friends have flown before- On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.” Then the bird said, “Nevermore.” Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken, “Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is its only stock and store, Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore- Till the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore Of ‘Never-nevermore.’ ” But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling, Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door; Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore- What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore Meant in croaking “Nevermore.” This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core; This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining On the cushion’s velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o’er, But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o’er She shall press, ah, nevermore! Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor. “Wretch,” I cried, “thy God hath lent thee-by these angels he hath sent thee Respite-respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore! Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!” Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” “Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!-prophet still, if bird or devil!- Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore, Desolate, yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted- On this home by Horror haunted-tell me truly, I implore- Is there-is there balm in Gilead?-tell me-tell me, I implore!” Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” “Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!-prophet still, if bird or devil! By that Heaven that bends above us-by that God we both adore- Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn, It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore- Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.” Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” “Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!” I shrieked, upstarting- “Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore! Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken!-quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted-nevermore!

Great vid Adding to the theory. Ultemecia wants to know what SeeD stands for. Rinoa never was one, so it makes sense why she wanted Seifer to find out the meaning of it. She knew her fate and maybe felt she could change it somehow. So much they could do with the story if it's remade.

Wow, that makes sense. I don't know if Square Enix will do a Remake of Final Fantasy VIII, but if they do I imagine that they will handle it in a similar way to their FF7 remake series. In which case they will probably change everything and reduce the complexity of the story. There was a time when many of us had hoped that the Final Fantasy VII remake would be lore faithful, but unfortunately, they decided to simply detract from what the original story meant.

I’m a believer of R=U! Thanks for this engaging FF8 content. FF8 is my favorite RPG/game of all time! It has the richest story and lore in the series esoterically.

I was 17 when FF8 came out and played the hell out of it as I did with every FF from the NES on. Can attest that the R=U theory was a thing even back then. There are far too many things that correlate for it to be mere coincidence. I do believe that maybe some behind the scenes development issues may have come up for Squaresoft not to have committed to it. Because there really are a lot of inconsistencies in the game that they didn't hash out before release. It did seem to be a rushed game. I also think they settled on a so-called happy ending instead of sticking the landing and making the protagonist's love interest being the bad guy and having a tragic ending. This theory does seem to be gaining some traction recently. Its been popping up in my recommendations a lot recently. I've seen a few recent videos commenting on this lately. As for the naysayers, there is no convincing me that this wasn't at least the original intent, even though they didn't follow through. I am a true believer. Also, hard agree with you Windward...Squaresoft over Square-Enix all the way. Actually in that regard old-school Enix as well over Square-Enix.

Yes, indeed. Back when I was playing when I was a kid, I didn't have internet back then, and for some reason it seemed obvious to me that the story was pointing to Rinoa being Ultimecia. In a sense it seemed like the sort of thing that did not need to be stated outright in the story, and when I saw the ending that sort of confirmed my suspicion. Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 had some very mysterious endings and story concepts, which drove me to play the games multiple times. When I learned that Yoshinori Kitase had retracted his statement about Ultimecia not being Rinoa, I decided to produce a series where I bring forth the narrative logic that many of us had back then. Another reason I am doing this discourse now is so that people can think about it before Square Enix probably do a remake of FFVIII and change everything. Considering how the story of FF7 was so completely ruined in the FF7 Remake, I just know that SE will do a thorough hatchet job on FF8 if they ever remake it. My aim is to bring forth all of the information pertaining to this belief that was once quite popular and present it to people. Thus far I have examined Griever and Para-Magic in some detail, and I have a lot more planned as well. 👍

44:30 You were speaking quite well until you missed up the naming. This is translation error. It should be Artemisia, because the Japanese R sound could be interpreted as L as well.

Interesting. Artemisia and Ultimecia. I think there is an inspiration in regard to the historical Artemisia II of Caria who drunk her husband's ashes. ulcc.emuseum.com/objects/1496/artemisia-drinking-the-ashes-of-her-husband-mausolous In regard to ultimate + cia, ultimate is the last in a succession and cia is a feminine suffix. If she is the last in a succession of sorceresses the ultimate, then the play on words could applied. Both Artemisia and ultimate could be emphasized as influences for naming. They convey an impactful message. ultimate 1 happening at the end of a process or activity: EVENTUAL:

Seems like good advice. With the course Square Enix has taken I think that now, the company wants characters from older FF games to be malleable, that way they can alter them for new spinoff games or remakes. I have a strange feeling that Hironobu Sakaguchi probably intended FFVIII to be somewhat mysterious. Kitase's retraction for what it was worth did make many of us aware of the input of multiple writers for the story and reignited a good deal of discussion about narrative ties and logic that was established very early on by many players. At this point, with Nojima going silent on twitter and people at Square Enix being careful about what they say about the older FF narratives, I suppose people are going to have to judge for themselves what FFVIII means as a whole. I still have a lot of content I have yet to release about FFVIII's story. I really owe Yoshinori Kitase for making his retraction, without it this video series about FFVIII would likely not exist.

square definitely don't know how to make original stories anymore, so it stands to reason that they don't actually know how to pilot final fantasy as a franchise anymore because that kinda matters for final fantasy. they're also having a woeful time of figuring out how to make a role playing game in the modern gaming landscape because they're too proud or something to use the ff12 battle system again for a single player release.

It seems like they depend too much upon the reputation of Final Fantasy, whilst at the same time ruining that very reputation. Each DragonQuest release still does very well and receives massive praise, they keep what the fans like and build upon it. With Final Fantasy 13, 15, 7 episodic remake and 16, the foundations of the old battle systems are dissolved, in favor of increasingly action-packed gameplay. They do a ton of experimental stuff in every new FF installment, it's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Though in this case the chocolates mostly all taste bad. It used to be a very dependable product to buy, now not so much. FF Installments take years and years to make but the last 2, 15 and 16 have been so lackluster to me.
