Not JT though. Even us metal head bassists knew HE was a monster! The rest of the band definitely got overshadowed by him, and I watch those early live shows on KZbin, and they’re all really impressive

Yeah, when searching for great individual musicians, I don't normally look to the top 40 pop charts to find them. This is the exception to that rule. I'm actually surprised that he didnt try his hand at playing metal.

I’ve always appreciated Johns bass playing because he never just stayed 8n the background, he helped drive the rhythm of their songs. But I hadn’t stopped to think that the drumming was in sync and an equal part of the musical equation

Poetry. Huge props to the drummer too playing to a click all the way through. Tight as a nat’s chuff. Straight to tape, one take, no edits. If you f&ck up you have to scrub it and start again! Pretty damn impressive.

This is by far the best & correct way to play the " Rio " bass line as it is like this & very busy & i see others do it but they miss out on the fact that they are either playing less or not playing it in the correct way as its a bass line you need to own or it'll catch up on you... This is how it was recorded for the album but i've even heard John Taylor play it less busy when i've went to see the Live as its so intense & practically no stop... If you can play your version of the " Rio " bass line that isnt as full on as this but still does the job great but if i want to hear John playing " Rio " properly id have to go back to much easier Live Gigs or play the album version as John has slightly taken his foot off the pedal when hes played this live for the last 20 years but can you blame him... How your hearing it in this upload was how John recorded it & he played it that way for thousands of live shows & now plays it at a slightly less busy version but as bassists who learned how to play this then you make up your minds on how you'd play it Live as it is a killer pulsing almost not stop bass line & one of his best from the first 3 Albums... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

John said it himself, as he got older, he wanted to simplify his basslines as Nick can do a lot of the fills through his keyboard. That prob bled into his live performances. Duran’s first 2 albums, John pretty much gave it his all cause he wanted that success and capture the hearts of fans. He was hungry like the wolf and as he progressed, I wouldn’t say he got lazy (maybe he did, maybe he didn’t, only he can answer that) but if you compare his earlier work with his later ones, you can tell he has simplified his basslines.

I've played bass for 16 years now (mid 30s) and this song always wears me out live. I can't imagine doing this every night in a list of songs like this, especially while getting older. The important thing is he still captures the feel of it even if not hitting every single ghost note that you can't hear well in the mix anyway
