Pick Withers is one of the most underrated drummers. Also shows how the *bass is always the needle and thread that sows it all together*, whether noticed or not. I always thought John Illsey was very restrained through all of DS's 6 albums + 1 EP, yet heard in isolation it shows what a solid bedrock he provided for Mark Knopfler to stand on.

They were mad to let Pick Withers go. He was fantastic. But he got sick of Knopfler not letting him choose which drums to hit on which beat.

@@barthvapour I've a theory. MK (I love him) let his ego get the better of him. Pick got sick of seeing this (must have really started to rear its head with the MK DK split). Pick's been second hand quoted as saying he got tired of the band getting too rock and roll. I interpret it as this getting tired of the egos. MK himself has, post BIA, obliquely commented on how the pressures of stardom mess life up. I love Terry Williams in Alchemy live, perfect drummer for that, but all over the studio versions, Pick is just absolute king.

@@ksoman953 I actually can't stand Terry Williams' overplaying on the live version. Amazing drummer, totally wrong for Dire Straits. He puts drum fills after every line almost, it's completely wrong. The genius of Pick Withers is the tight jazz feel he brings to it.

@@sadivisn My favorite songs are always changing, but I'll give you my playlist of favorites so far this year: Avantasia: The Seven Angels or anything from the first two Metal Opera albums. Foreigner: Head Games or anything else from that album. Rainbow: Street Of Dreams or anything else from that album (Bent Out Of Shape). The Babys: Anything from the Head First album. Billy Joel: The Stranger album. I guess I just gave up on listing songs and went with whole albums instead. Otherwise it's too difficult.
