​@@TORRES999ify The reason why it keeps coming back is that the players were individually good enough but there was no collective ethos and many of the players viscerally hated each other 😊 The main manager, Sven was absolutely appalling and not a football coach or even a leader. After him, they also appointed an Italian who couldn't even speak English! That group of players could easily have made two Semi-finals and a Final over a decade but there was no playing structure and there were literally no tactics. The Premier League clubs were far too powerful & had more sway over the players than the England manager. It was absolutely infuriating and was the product of the FA's lack of investment in coaching over three decades. 😡

It would help if we prioritised the development of our own at the aforementioned academies. Once upon a time English youth players used to have to be among the best in the British Isles. Now they have to be among the best in Europe, perhaps even the world. Plus it would have been better if that nice Mister Erikssen could have kept his dick in his pants long enough to focus on the 2006 World Cup. He took 17yo Theo Walcott (never having played a single minute of Premiership football) as a back-up for Michael Owen, who ended up doing his ACL. Jermaine Defoe was on fire during 2005/06. Such a waste of talent. Erikssen never even played Walcott. But at least Sven waltzed off into the sunset still being paid out of his multimillion pound contract by the FA.

It's interesting to hear their views and it's revealing to some extent. The truth though is they were amazing at some things, but they were not technical players and couldn't keep it under pressure. These attributes were needed as the game fundamentally changed in their era.They were left behind. We have since changed how football is coached in this country and we are seeing the benefits - Grealish, Foden, Bellingham, Saka. These players are a product of new grass roots coaching and England has got closer to the cutting edge of the evolving game. Exciting.

It was a mistake to have 11 years of management by two diehard 4-4-2 men, around the time English football was dominated by 3 or 5 man midfields. That's why our midfield never looked any good. We had the quality, but nobody was playing the role they were used to at club level. Gerrard and Lampard were two of the best midfielders in the world at the time, but they'd never have been used together as a midfield 2 by a Champions League club of that era.

I don't dispute Capello did badly with England, and that his methods did not translate. But to suggest a Champions League winning manager with more League Titles to his name than Jose Mourinho simply did not have any tactics at all is obviously nonsense.

The issue with Capello was he was a guy who had a very specific philosophy which he could impose (with great success) at a club, because players who didn't fit could be moved on, and new ones could come in who did fit. At international level, if several of your star players don't fit your philosophy, you're screwed... there's no transfer window to help you out. And then if you have no rapport with them either because of the language barrier, it just makes things worse. FWIW, Capello's win record with England was pretty decent... I think he was a bit unlucky, and then because none of the players liked him, it was easy to throw him under the bus for something that was more complicated.

I hate these conversations of the golden generation. It’s almost as if: France, Italy, Brazil, Spain and Germany just had bang average teams in comparison. Brazil alone at one point had: Ronaldinho, ronaldo, kaka, Adriano, Cafu, roberto Carlos etc no one in the golden generation even touches these players levels. Then there’s the Spanish era from 08-12 pretty sure they never lost an international game in that whole period 2x euros and 1x World Cup, madness! Englands ‘golden’ generation just was never good enough regardless of managers. End of.

World Class players always looked as if they were struggling even against easy teams like Rio said but with this current England team, they have easy games all the time and they're definitely not as good as the England teams between about 2003-2010. England didn't have anyone with the technical ability of Ronaldo9, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Henry, Pirlo, Totti in those days. They were a top 10 team at best and that's where Sven took them. Scholes had plenty of opportunities in central midfield at World Cup 98, 02 and Euro 2000, he didn't do much in these tournaments.

Yes they could of been set up better. Stronger manager could of maybe sorted the lampard,/ gerrard debate, had them better tactically and played as a team, but they weren't as good as your Spains or Portugal or Brazils, so getting to quarter finals was what they were in my opinion, wouldn't say they under achieved but they wasn't able to over achieve and win something either

Not sure that's 100% correct. The 2006 WC side was full of players who were either match winners and "big game/moment" players for their Clubs OR players who had succeeded under pressure time and time again: Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole - We've never had a better defence Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick - Crazy talent and game control ability in midfield Joe Cole, David Beckham - 2 of the best wingers in the world at the time and the best crosser in world football Wayne Rooney & Michael Owen - Need we say more here? You look at that group of players and a stunning team can be realised if we had better management and tactical nouse. Arguably, the best CM paring would likely have been Carrick, Hargreaves and one of either Stevie/Lamps rather than trying to play a pivot Gerrard/Lampard with Hargreaves having to do ALL of the work (he was our best player in 06 by a country mile). Don't ever underestimate tactical importance (patterns of play/formation). It's why weaker teams perform so well and the best teams win!

I just think England fans have a higher expectation for their teams and players than they should. There is a level of overhype. The truth is majority of the best players in the world are not English decade after decade. I think it’s because the premier league is the best league in the world but that’s because of its infrastructure, the high level of competition every week. They won in 1966 against a German team 21 years after world 2, there was so much behind that game pushing England to win, the whole World was cheering them on. It’s a different story now, other countries dislike England because they perceive them as arrogant.

It's a mix of things. The England squads that Eriksson and Capello had were good enough to realistically aim to win a tournament, even if they weren't the standout favourites. Issue is it's a knockout tournament, you only get a chance every 2 years, it's at the end of a long league season. You need a bit of luck in key moments, and you need to hit momentum at exactly the right time. You only have to look at Brazil in the last World Cup to see how easy it is for things to go wrong. I'd say in Euro 1996, WC 2002 and Euro 2004 England were arguably in the top 2 sides in each tournament, getting knocked out by the eventual winners in 96 and 02, and having incredible bad luck with the Rooney injury in 04. So it's not crazy for England to expect to be competing for trophies, but maybe people just underestimate how hard it is to win a tournament, even when you have a competitive squad.

I grew up in Italy, we would always make fun of England for playing like chickens with their heads cut off. They had lots of energy and ran a lot too but they were so poor off the ball teams that were lesser could easily maneuver around them with semi simple tactics. It’s interesting though because the last few times that I can think of off the top of my head, Italy (mainly Pirlo) wiped the floor with England at Euro 2012, Italy beats England at WC 2014, Italy edges England at Euro 2020. But this year for example Fiorentina and Inter lost their finals to English teams. Truth is the Premiere League had so much money in it they can buy any player and offer crazy wages that clubs in Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga cannot. It’s an exciting league to say the least but the tactics are pretty boring, minus City, Brentford and a few others with creative coaches. Serie A has been wide open recently with league winners. Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1 are super boring cuz the same teams win.

The English kick and rush style was forged in cold weather, and our players (Gerrard, Owen, Beckham, etc) were naturally suited it, but in a summer international tournament with fixtures coming thick and fast, the players often looked burnt out. You need to be able to control possession if you're playing in South America or southern Europe. That's changed now, with the Premier League having a lot more teams who play a possession style, and the average English player being much more comfortable on the ball and dealing with sophisticated tactical setups. As for the league itself. Below Man City, the Premier League is still incredibly competitive. We're not quite in the Bundesliga / La Liga / Ligue 1 situation yet, but I agree it's a problem. Although not particularly relevant to our national team.

Both the England squads of 1990 who were at Italia '90 (Linekar, Pearce, Parker, Platt, Gascoigne, Barnes, Beardsley, Walker, Butcher, Wright etc) under Bobby Robson; and also the Euro '96 squad under Venables - were both far better and more cohesive than the so-called 'golden generation'. The squads from 2018-present are also obviously the best in decades.

For years the reason England and its so called golden generation never got to the later stages of a tournament was because as good as the individual players were in the sides, they simply couldnt retain possession over sides such as the Portugal, Croatia, Germany etc who proved to be their downfall. Without dominanting possession this led to England sides making stupid mistakes and being unreliable. This was true of England sides under Erikson, Capello, Hodgson etc. They tend to focus on Capello here....unlike the other England managers Capello had at least proven himself and won top honours in club football but he was outdated for modern football by the time he took the England role and it was a big misjudgement by the FA to appoint him. The ignorance with the Golden Generation is to forget just how strong Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany all were in that decade of 00 - 10. Even if England had been firing with good form (they were close to it in 04), they still would have had a job on beating the tougher teams in a must win knock out game.

There's umpteen reasons why England didn't perform better than they did. 1) The players were good but they were never as good as their most ardent supporters thought. There hasn't been a genuine world's best player from anywhere in the UK in my lifetime. Teams can win without them but they help. 2) Other teams were never as bad as some of the media and fans would make out. I've seen many teams written off pre-game and that's never a good look. It puts neutrals against you, it heaps expectation (rather than confidence) on players and it creates a negative atmosphere. When things don't immediately fall for you then that bravado shows itself as being fairly brittle. At its worst, you see a team like Iceland score and the team then go completely into their shell as though they weren't up for a contest and expected to just cruise through in second gear. This isn't a winning mentality. It's one of entitlement. 3) Tactically, they have often seemed one-dimensional and even more so when they had a recognised talent who overshadowed others.. Other countries sometimes go on these long periods of playing the same way, using the same group, building coherence and team spirit. England seem to have tended to just throw players in and hope it works. At times, the football they've played (I'm remembering a team that played with Beckham and Crouch where they got tired and just started launching it up top) has been horrible to watch. 4) The media (and some fans) are addicted to the emotional rollercoaster and hype every minor event up to maximum effect. There's not a lot of maturity or realism and that doesn't seem the most conducive environment to build team spirit in. The fans and media would switch in the current flavour of the month into the team at any point and players tend to be treated either as heroes or zeroes. There's a sensationalism in it all where, whatever the reality, the line taken has to be more extreme to gather a reaction. It's mostly media-driven and was at its worst about twenty years ago. If any manager wants a team that acts like the Germany team of old and keeps its head in the pressure moments then they'd need to insulate the squad against all that ridiculous hype (the positive and the negative). 5) Club football rules our game and club football is mostly propped up by foreign players, coaches and owners. As a result, many fans tend to make a false equivalence between the Premier League and England, ignoring the fact that at club level there is actual detailed coaching between players with a developed understanding, and the best of them are rarely English. That's just in one league. Admittedly, it's a very strong international league nowadays but go back years and look across the top leagues and how many players from other nations were represented versus how many English players (which is less of an issue now). English players have tended to be drawn from one league, playing one style, all in one media bubble and largely defined by inter-club rivalries. 6) Style of play. England have never varied the speed they play at. They play at one speed until they tire. They tend not to have a Xavi or Pirlo who sits deep and knows when to play fast or hold the ball. Instead, it's all just quick one twos down the sides and repeat. This can work. You can overpower teams quickly. If it doesn't though you are doing this for 90mins plus with no alternative, not much creativity really and it can be countered quite easily when you inevitably tire. There's not much composure in their play at all. If England could add one player it would be a deep-lying playmaker rather than filling their midfield with box to box types and tacklers. This might be somewhat down to what fans expect too. They want blood and fury and a hundred miles an hour but most teams vary their style. This was far more apparent decades ago than now as the European leagues are all somewhat homogenised now but it's still baked in somewhere. Put them in a pressure knockout game and you know they'll start at a hundred miles an hour, attack down the sides, and no midfielder will have more than 2 seconds on the ball. Either they'll run over a team or they won't and struggle later on. 7) England have no divine right to win tournaments. There have always been better squads out there. There have always been better individual talents. There have always been teams that play a more attractive style of football. There have always been teams with better records. There have always been better managers. There have always been teams with better team spirit. England are usually (in my lifetime) a top 10 international side and fairly consistent with that. That's not really a failure unless you think they are better than that (and, if so, why?). As it happens, they are stronger now than previously but there are still better sides out there, whether on paper or (where it matters) when it comes to actually playing football in tournaments. That's okay. It's the same for every other country on Earth bar one at any particular time. Until you actually start winning then there is no point in expecting it. It serves no positive purpose. That doesn't mean being defeatist. It's just a call for some realism and respect of the opposition. Without that, no-one deserves to win anything. Real confidence feels no urge to express itself because it's felt internally, not needing external agreement. That insularity mixed with jingoism (in a sporting sense) was far more apparent decades ago than now but you still hear it in places and in enough numbers that it makes neutrals just shake their heads at it all. You'd need to somehow insulate a team from that as it's absolutely cancerous to team spirit and acts as motivation to opponents. Accept the above, hope for the best, actually support rather than castigate, and England could win a tournament soon. I wouldn't make them favourites for the upcoming Euros but they could certainly win it. So, too, could....well, anyone in it really....but, more likely, France, Portugal, Spain, and all the usual suspects, with England in there too. But until such time as England become a team that steps up in the big moments rather than shrinks from them then they don't really deserve to be treating winning tournaments as something owed to them as they have nothing to back it up. Better to be low-key and let others take that mantle as there's nothing to be gained in that bravado and risking being obnoxious and plenty to be lost. As a nation, England are world-beaters at hype and the country loves the game but they ought to try flying under the radar sometime and seeing how it goes. They might just relax and perform better. But the media wouldn't want that. Measured pragmatism doesn't sell and sensationalism does. If they put less into hyping it all they'd probably get more out of it.

I’m Scottish and can’t understand why English sides haven’t done better than they have over the last 2 or 3 decades. England had , and have, the talent , much like all of the UK, but the lack of Man management behind the scenes is shocking. IMO the best manager England have had over the last 30years was easily EL Tel. That team played like the could. I hated getting beat by them at euro 96 but felt alright about it as they were a proper team. It’s a shame the players are let down by those that should be leading.

Capello is a legendary coach who has won with Milan Juventus Roma Real Madrid, and Serie A was the most tactically advanced league in the world. So I doubt Capello’s tactics were the problem.
