Rio Greeks and Greek Orthodox Community Rio, Brasil

Starting with the Greek National Anthem, this is a snapshot of Hellenism in Rio. I’ve been visiting Rio’s Greek community since 2020. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people. This time I capture their stories and this documentary is a snapshot of their lives and also how they include me.
I feel at home in Rio and these people have accepted me as their own. If you visit Rio, please attend a church service on the Sunday and connect with the parishioners. Saint Andrew Greek Church and the Sociedade Helênica Do Rio, at 46 Rua Darke de Matos.
In Copacabana and Bairro you will find O Grego restaurants. There is one more called Oia and previously Vokos at LeBlon. On Ipanema beach please visit Kiosk 100 which is owned by Sotiris and his friend. In one tiny corner of Sao Goncalo you may find a tiny, beautiful piece of Greece. Between 2020 and 2023 I gratefully stayed at a Greek-Brasilian home many times, though not much Greek was spoken. Some of the best memories of my life.
In comparison to São Paulo, Rio is obviously a small community with perhaps a few hundred to less than a thousand across Rio state.
The president of the Greek Orthodox Community is Andrea and this is important as we have not had a female president of a similar community anywhere in Latin America until recently, none in Oceania or Asia, with only countries such as Netherlands, Ukraine, London having seen a woman lead.
Ausli is her amazing husband and someone I am proud to call a friend. He is a talented artist too.
The documentary lasts for almost 29 minutes and alternates between hanging out at O Grego and my connections with the Church which also intersect at times. Thanks to Father, we start the video with a rendition of the Greek national anthem. Efharisto Pater
On the way out of Rio towards Sao Goncalo, you will find Sparta Motel but I suggest you avoid it. Unless desperate. Not run by Greeks anyway

Είμαι Αυστραλός, έμαθα πορτογαλικά και έζησα στη Βραζιλία (στο Ρίο) για 3 μήνες, και τώρα μαθαίνω ελληνικά (οι παππούδες μου ήταν από την Ελλάδα). Λατρεύω τόσο τη Βραζιλία όσο και την Ελλάδα Sou australiano, aprendi português e morei 3 meses no Brasil (no rio), e agora estou aprendendo grego (meus avós eram da Grécia). Eu amo o Brasil e a Grécia! μπράβο σου, να είσαι καλά !
