One of my favorite John Wayne westerns. Great supporting cast and an excellent musical score

As soundtracks for Westerns from the tail end of the 'classical' period, this score and that for 'Hour of the Gun' deserve to be far better known; they reverently offer a summation of all that Copland, E. Bernstein, and Jerome Moross, among others, had so thoroughly developed (and which would continue until about John Williams' 'The Cowboys' [1972]) while adding Goldsmith's particular gifts for rhythm, melody and orchestration. 'Lost' gems indeed.

Absolutely no question the best music. The 1950s 60s 70s. Then it went cheap.

I might add Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Bad Girls" and Bruce Broughton's score to "Silverado" as great throwback sounds of westerns they don't make anymore.

Rio Conchos and Take A Hard Ride both also by Goldsmith certainly count. While not 100% a western (a revolutionario film), 100 Rifles deserves plenty of love too. Then there's also Elmer Bernstein's score to Big Jake.

One of the top ten best lines: John Wayne; Mcnally: Can you handle him (Referring to bad guy Victor French) Jack Elam; Phillips: Well, if you hear a loud noise, that will be Mr. Ketcham here dying. Great Score - Many Thanks for posting!

I live on a mountain ranch in Colorado with my family. Occasionally we have mountain lions and bears traversing through the area. When I head out the door I’m packing some heat, so when I tell my daughter (who loves this movie at the age of 7) as I step out into the night to feed our horses, “If you hear a loud noise…” she finishes the quote, “that’ll be Mr. Ketchum dying.”

Ever think how beautiful the music scores are from the 1950s 1960s 1970s. The directors would use real full orchestration.

Goldsmith wrote a lot of great western scores, but my favorite has to be "The Wild Rovers".

Jerry Goldsmith really draws heavily from Aaron Copland but it has all the hallmarks of his sound that it doesn't like a copy
