Great video, Scott! I've never seen a hammer handpiece in use before, so that was really nice to see. Could you do another video on how to set those taller cabs, though? The very idea of using glue is anathema to me, but I don't really know how to secure the stone with a bezel when the sides are taller than the bezel.

I would like to see you set an oval stone into one of your cast settings. Such as cutting a seat for a faceted oval stone.

I like a nice thick bezel and make my own tube settings using 0.5-1.0 mm Sterling. I’ve never yet had to file the edge of the settings to make setting easier. I use a hammer and setting punch.
@cynthiaharrison4610
@cynthiaharrison4610 6 ай бұрын
I use a fine silver bezel like I would for a cabochon. Then I solder a ring of sterling inside the bezel to seat the faceted stone. Fine silver is a lot easier to push. No visable difference in the finished product.

This is one of if not the very best explanation and demo for setting a stone or cab in a tube setting. Thanks sooo much and I hope you do many more very detailed demos such as this one. I just LOVE Rio!! 👩🏼‍🎨🌵🔨

Thanks for explaining it. Question, what kind of tubing is it? Is it regular sterling tubing? Or is it the thick kind, or is it special tubing for bezel making only? Thanks again

Hi Ingrid, Thanks for your question. These tube settings are cast from sterling silver using a mold. Hope this helps!

Hi! I love the finished look of the ring! Is that half round wire he used for the ring band? If so, any idea what gauge? It looks great!

Hi, and thanks for asking! Our jewelry techs say that you could use half-round wire for this, and they suggest 8-gauge. Hope this helps!

It’s a hammer hand piece. I have one and it fun!
@MBrusaZappellini
@MBrusaZappellini 6 жыл бұрын
You can also use a brass punch (make them yourself with tool brass rods) and hammer to push a heavy bezel like that. The trick is to tap it towards you (so the stone is between you and the punch- which makes the work easier to see). A hammer hand piece is awesome, but not 100% necessary (in case you’re like me and prefer to work with simple, inexpensive tools)

Hello, I hope you can help! How do you do rubover set a single round stone on signet rings? Should I use a flat top with straight edge stone and just glue it? Or a flat top with single bevel stone? If using a FTSB stone that is 1.5mm in height, do i need the bevel to be a bit higher than the stone? And what would the thickness of the bezel should be? Many thanks in advance!

I’m having a hard time finding out how to set my very small 1x2 mm oval stones. It’s either to thick and won’t curve on the end to make it flush or it’s too think and the second heat hits it, the silver melts before I can get the solder to melt. Uggg help!
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 3 ай бұрын
For the stone setting part of this, we would treat it like a round stone when setting. Make the tube setting slightly oval. If the metal is too thick a bur can be used to thin it down slightly. We also start at the smaller ends of the stone and work our way to the wider areas. These are very tiny so they can be a challenge when setting. Not exactly sure about the soldering question and the metal heating issue. Could we get more information?
@YouTubeSue
@YouTubeSue 3 ай бұрын
that might be the issue. I just have a brûlée type torch. I have bezel wire which is very very thin and I have thicker silver plates that I try to affix the bezel to but the heat seems to get too hot too quick and melts the bezel wire before the solder can melt. Like if I’m trying to make an earring for example.

@@KZbinSue Try directing your heat from UNDERNEATH the back plate so the flame never directly touches the thin bezel. Helps me, anyway. Good luck!

You don't have to use the hammer piece. You can achieve the same result by using a nail that you've flattened and polished and a hammer. You can also buy a stone setting system from Rio Grande. They come in different sizes and prices.
