Purple dye is in the water to show the rip current and bring surfers attention to it - in the beginning of the video they just put it in the water, and by the end of the video you can see narrow line into the ocean - that's it, that's the current

This is Rhodamine dye, commonly used in tracer studies in the oceans, lakes and rivers. It does not negatively impact the local ecosystem. There is a more in depth film about this on my other youtube channel youtube dot com/waterlust

Patrick Rynne Hi I just want to ask. I live in an archipelago so I often travel by ship. Whenever I'm watching the surface of the sea, I often see a sort of lane where the water looks calm or the wave pattern is more relax(?) but on its side the wave pattern is more jagged (imagine a strong wind blowing on the surface of the water). Could those lanes be rip tides? Sometimes there are "lanes" on the sea that seem to have a different shade of color that the surrounding sea. I tried googling this but I couldn't really find the answer.

Found myself in one unexpectedly on Lake Superior. Thank God I knew what to do. I swam along parallel to the beach until, after what seems like about 100 feet or so, I felt was out of it. Luckily in swimming back in, I found myself standing on a rather shallow sandbar quickly. I was able to catch a breath and then swim the remaining 30 yards or so back to land. It happened near White Fish Bay on the U.P.

Emma Newgate If you look at a map of the US, Lake Superior is the one to the left (west) of all the other Great Lakes, which divide the US from Canada. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by sq miles or kilometers. It's actually bigger than a few entire states.

From wikipedia : "rip current is usually narrow and located in a trench between sandbars"....if you notice here ,the guy is pouring dye specifically in a trench between two sand bars 0:07 and then dye spreads along that trench into the sea...so rip current happens when there exists a trench like here in shallow waters

Patrick, thank you for not putting anything to harm the organism's or fish in the ocean. Frankly, if a person doesn't know how to swim...wear a PFD!!! It's better to look crazy than die! And don't go out by yourself which equals going out with another non-swimmer!

That's fabulous your educating "people who DON'T UNDERSTAND" how a rip tide works. Why are you sending it back to me some 5 months later? As an ocean person, I've learned to read the waters pretty well. Thanks for helping out those who don't get it. :)
@Accumulator111 жыл бұрын
That location, the way the shoreline extends out, is an obvious place for the current to circulate and flow back out. Would have been better to dye a not so obvious rip. Does a rip normally start that close to the shore? Also wonder how long of time does a rip area normally last?

Marys just unsurprisingly sensitive, seeing all the destruction to the waters -big oil, the petrochem country floating between Hawaii and California - i thought the same thing but have seen dyes used to map aquifers so figured it was safe

At what point are you supposed to start swimming parallel to the shore?
@darthnihilus40742 жыл бұрын
Any point. Also, you don’t always swim parallel to the shore. It’s always perpendicular to the rip that you should swim.

thee is a way to survive a rip current ,being a strong swimmer isnt it- stay calm, calmly tred water , on your back if possible, till the rip lets go- and ride the ingoing waves in
@saveouroceanlife111 жыл бұрын
I'm not attempting to come across all arrogant. I spend hours, days and months studying the ocean, ocean floor, weather, currents, etc. If this video helps a person realize they need to be a strong swimmer or could be pulled out...great. I said, I pray that die isn't polluting or affecting the organisms & fish in the water. Which is my responsibility to be concerned the way people are dumping "crap" in our oceans. Please don't pollute! Thank you kindly. The fish thank you too. :)
@saveouroceanlife111 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am an enviromentalist. That's why I said, thanks for using non-toxic dye. I have more hours as a surfer, diver, advanced in oceanography, etc. My point was with do respect...it's the ocean! If you are not familiar or a strong swimmer, better be safe 1st. Stay out or wear a PFD and never swim alone. That's simple explaination.
@averiemorgaine76199 жыл бұрын
That why I knew before happen, I went swim on lake, I started check, my mom told me this not have rip currents, but I said I think we should leave because I see something moved, in one hour later, the news said woman died in rip currents in lake. That why you must check before go swim.

Anyone who surfs or knows the ocean doesn't need a die pack. Hope that was biodegradable and fish friendly! Or please don't pollute our oceans. Thanks...,
@saveouroceanlife111 жыл бұрын
It's a little brain to figure waves flow back and forth, in and out. Keyword out! Thousands of pounds of water flowing around a 200 lb. body? Need I say more? Know how to swim before going in!!! Give a hoot DON'T POLLUTE!!! SAVE OUR OCEAN LIFE AND WWF. As in polor bears, gorilla's, tigers, rhinoceros, etc.
@saveouroceanlife111 жыл бұрын
As far as spamming, stop with all of the foul illegal language. Have an educated response. Kids see this stuff to learn. Lastly, please don't pollute our oceans & beaches. Unrelated to a non-toxic dye. Hence - saveouroceanlife. :) good conversation topic.
