It's not about rudder, it's about trim. If your using your rudder to roll tack your loosing boat speed. The essence of boat speed is keeping the use of rudder to an absolute bare minimum. Badly tuned boats need to be steered. Well tuned boats are steered with trim. The best way to learn to steer with trim is to take the rudder off. It forces you to learn very quickly.

I used to surf my rowing dinghy - with a passenger in the back, row into a wave and drag an oar to steer... solo,, ship oars and jump over the stern to do a body-drag and steer boat like a boogieboard.

How effective is the boadyboard technique in larger waves? I was considering this for a Mirror dinghy.

I tried this in a kayak. I couldn't figure out why no one else was doing this. Then a wave flipped me and dragged my face along the rocky bottom for 10ft or so and i had an epiphany.
@dontforgettolike71272 жыл бұрын
Lol yep there’s a lot more to waves than people realize. Countless times I get stuck in the wave being spun around like a washing machine. When I was unlucky enough, it would slam me to the ground a couple times. They are way more powerful than they look from the beach, and I forget that every time.

I'm sorry you had that experience, but seriously. Visualising that you had a light bulb moment whilst being pummeled sends me

I remember my first encounter with a big boi wave as a "swimmer". I was innocently standing where the waves break. The sun disappeared into a shadow, I looked up just in time to see a wave fall on me and I was held against the sand for a good 5 seconds. It all makes sense when you realize a cubic foot of water weighs 62 pounds.

I had a similar moment at a surf break wondering why surfers were leaving a very alluring peak alone. I paddled over and as I was dropping in the drawing water made whole reef go dry and I suddenly realised why they were on the other peak.

Great dialogue here peeps.. I spent a bit of time in Oz 30yearsago when I was 18, I was in the water every day, on a board that was a bit small, trying to catch waves that were a bit too big, and, mostly getting pummelings, but being a decent and strong enough swimmer and being young, I took smashings that , if you saw a child or old person take on the head or go over the falls of, that they'd be lucky to survive . And all surfers do that, every time they go out. There's just no explaining how's dreadful and powerful every wave can be if ye not constantly on the job out there eh . I found Swimming in the surf to be much less of a struggle tbf. Ducking under that noise and power, smashing past and over you. And again, and again. On my own treading water out the back in big swel. In the Indian ocean. Wtf was I thinking?. There was a human foot round on the beach not long before I arrived, yet I believed I was simply not on the menu.. arrr. the imperviousness of youth.
