It was very sad to see the kickback trestle collapse into the river. I remember when the Reading railroad unloaded coal cars coming from anthracite regions. I remember watching the tiple coal unloader work as late 74, 1975 give or take a little. I remember the grain elevator, which is further up river worked as late as 72.

Always find it interesting that cities buy property from private companies or individuals, and then ban it's residents from the property. The residents fund the city to make the property purchases.

As one who spent alot of my time there as a youth. I feel so sad to see Philadelphia’s waterfront being Disneyfied. I don’t see how people will buy overpriced condos with a view of Camden,lousy schools,terrible drinking water? I saw a mural advertisement that pissed the locals big time! The mural ad called Philadelphia as the new Brooklyn!! I wonder who’s benefiting from all the redevelopment?

Been there many times and I always had a different experience. Suprisingly, never a bad one. I always met interesting people and enjoyed the overall vibe of feeling like I wasn't supposed to be there. ...lol...as always, great job passing along some interesting Pennsylvania history!

The Port Richmond or is it Fishtown debate is as old as me (76) but my buddys who lived on Palmer St. Said that pier was in Fishtown. I was a Swampoodle kid, so not my turf.

At least the graffiti is very artistic...I wish some of the people that did some of the things moved on and were paid good money and are doing things like the huge murals with meaning you see on buildings..

I think I’ve seen old footage of coal cars on this Reading pier. My son has old VHS tapes. Very sad. Was just mentioning the closing of the Turn Hole tunnel. Sad. Like when they closed the trail up to Glen Onoko Falls. 😢

No drug dealers hung out there. Users yeah. Dealers no. I found my way there on mountain bike, searching for serenity, healing and fishing spots, several times. There was a cool fire pit at the tip that enticed thoughts of night fishing.

I didn't know we had parishes in PA. Is that like the parishes of Louisiana or is it more like the church?
@pb68slab182 ай бұрын
Churches. Every ethnicity had their own church or parish. Ethnic Irish, Italian, Polish, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Swedish, etc immigrants all had their own neighborhoods, built their own churches, and their own bars!

Greed and neglect from the city. Doesn’t take much to strengthen the foundation. The venetians have held up their city for thousands of years with the same design which is not that expensive. Add large rocks to support the surrounding sediment and then insert new pylons to solidify the remaining sediment closest to the concrete.

Well then. Somebody is very lucky as to have not been on the end of the pier when it collapsed…. Or…. Perhaps somebody WAS on the end, and now they have met THEIR end. The world may never know… just as the question: how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?!? Mr. Owl says it’s 3 licks.
