They show us 3 cool things, we get 1 and the other 2 are thrown in the trash never to be seen again. it always felt to me like we actually got less than what we lost. To me, the difference between a mob vote and biome vote is that mobs for a mob vote feel like they have been deliberately made to go in the vote, whereas biome votes feel more natural with a feeling that first there were many content ideas and then it needed to be narrowed down to be able to actually make it on time.

It's probably harder to code proper mob behaviour than biome generation considering how little does the block placement actually matter when a chunk is loaded. It's still lazy and annoying of them to present 3 already thought out mobs and say they only have time to make 1.

I all but guarantee it won't have an effect. Literally every time people have speculated about potential extra utility of mob vote mobs, they've been completely wrong. It always ends up being *exactly* what they describe, no more, in the most boring way possible. The crab claw will increase reach by like 1 block and have zero interesting synergies. The armadillo armor will be annoying to obtain, barely increase survivability at all, won't allow enchantments, and will have zero interesting synergies. The penguin speed boost will be in water only and the activation conditions will be unreliable as well as mild enough to the point where the only way to even tell that you have it will be the effect symbol in the corner, and will have zero interesting synergies. I guarantee all three mobs will end up being almost purely decorative at absolute best, and they will act like it took *so* much work to do and they couldn't possibly have added all three, and also they'd love it if we all could maybe buy more minecoin to support this small indie dev

This is probably the most aggravating mob vote so far because it just kinda feels like everything here is something that should be in the game already or something. I'm not even talking about the mobs themselves, I mean the mechanics surrounding them. Ultimately the three mobs end up being less about the mob itself and more about the thing you wish was changed/made better. Here's what I mean, you can choose from: -Extended reach for breaking and placing blocks. This would probably end up being an Ender Chest item that is really helpful especially for builders. -Doing *anything* for wolves ever. I swear they haven't updated wolves in 700 years. -Faster transporation... Which the Elytra already does but 10x better... I think that's the biggest problem. Minecraft's forms of transport are all basically terrible except for the Elytra. The boat is already the second best in the game! Minecarts are too expensive to build too much of, and horses are basically only used because people like horses. (I think keeping horses is cool, but it feels too easy to potentially lose a horse if you actually use it to go explore. It's better to use them to go between from two close bases). I think this mob vote kinda summarizes the issue I've had with more recent Minecraft updates, and why Caves and Cliffs was so good. Caves and Cliffs was an update that actually tried to fix an issue people had with the game (exploring caves was boring) so they tried to fix it. It kinda feels like every update after that either felt tone-deaf (whatever happened with sculk sensors) or didn't really add anything to the game (mangrove swamps). I'm not saying every update has to be something astounding every single time, but I still think things like raids, wolves, the End, quicker modes of transportation, etc. need to actually be looked at more, instead of adding something to the game that barely changes how the game is played.

As a builder I don't understand why anyone thinks the crab is useful 1:46 got it right litterally why can't I move one block forward and if it takes up the off hand slot that's actually a downgrade for builders since we can't hold 2 types of blocks to switch easily in our off hand

I seriously agree. the best land transportation is the horse, which is pretty good if you know the breeding strat, but you can't ride it in water. the best sky transportation is the elytra, which you get at the end of the game. the best water transportation is the boat, which is pretty slow compared to the others. penguins are not only cute, but also, they are handy for those who spawned into a world that is just a bunch of islands. a block reach of +1 isn't that handy, and wolf armor probably won't make you bring your wolves out more often.

Yeah, and it's just tedious to use them even if they were immune to damage. They won't follow you unless you walk on land. Use an elytra or a boat and they will lag behind (or you can take a max of 1 dog in the boat). A sword, bow, axe etc does the job just fine.

imo the reason everyone says that is because the only returning mob that lost a vote was the frog, and it seemingly only returned because Mojang specifically said that the biome vote losers would be added eventually. If they leave things as is, the majority always defaults to voting for the most useful looking one without looking at any other aspects of the mobs, because there's seemingly only one chance, and also due to other "bad" votes where we "lost" good mobs "forever". People want to strive for perfection even though mob vote mobs are meant to be nice little side features. Adding one or multiple losing mob vote mobs this year would make it instantly clear that the losers aren't gone forever, so people wouldn't be as uptight about voting for the perfect mob no matter the cost. Also: yes, modders can add all 3 mobs by themselves because it's not hard to add something to the game as a mod; the difficulty of adding something to the base game is it has to: - act the same way across all versions of Minecraft - be designed to feel "vanilla" - be designed in general (behaviour, graphics, animation, audio) - go through the snapshot process for community feedback - have as few bugs as possible in a game where thousands of things can interact with each other - be something that the community (worldwide) wants or is indifferent to So it's easier said than done. And again, I bet the devs would rather get to work on doing all of that for 1 mob and the rest of the update instead of 3 mobs and part of the rest of the update.

It's because Minecraft just straight up isn't a good game. They've dropped so many fake things on it but truthfully, there's so many better games for what it offers. Want a sandbox? There's plenty. I'm kindof surprised that the penguin is so unwanted considering that boats are uswd pretty frequently for villager transport and nether highways, I feel like improving those would be much more useful than smth like dog armor. the dogs deserve an update, the only updates they've had, not including bug fixes or AI improvements, since being added in 2011 are: 1. Pups added 2. More options to feed them 3. Dyeable collars 4. Texture slightly changed in 1.14 And for some more context, the first 3 all occurred between 2011 and 2012 While the dogs are certainly still fine as they are, the thing I'm most upset with is the fact that the cat has 11 different types, the parrot has 5, and the horse has 35, while the dogs despite having some of the most variation in the real world has some of the least variation in the game for tameable animals

I don't want them to remove mob-votes, but change it a bit. I think it'd be awesome if all three mobs were added (or maybe top 2), but the winning one gets more attention. For example; If the penguin won, they'd rework the snowy biomes. Potentially add a new structure, and maybe a snow-related item, while the other mob is simply added with base features. I really hope they do a "leftovers" update one day, where they add some of the losing mobs to the game. Or at least community favorites, like the moo-bloom.

nah, what they should do is spread out mob votes across three different updates. the winning mob gets added in the first update and they can focus on giving that mob attention like you said. then when the next update rolls out, the second place mob gets added and they can also give that mob attention, and same for the third mob. mob votes wouldn't be as common as they are now, but at least nobody gets left out, and the workload is the same as it's always been.

This is kind of how they're already doing it. The mob votes bring 3 of the mobs they have on a "maybe" list, then the most voted mob gets focused on in the here-and-now to add together with everything else the core update has to offer. The remaining mobs will still be on the "maybe" list, up "for grabs" by Mojang whenever they see fit (like for example a snowy biomes update like you mentioned being good for adding the penguin)

Is armor going to help against them dying in lava? Or falling off a cliff? Or getting blown up by creepers? No, it won't. Therefore, people will just leave them at their house like they always do, because they treat their dogs like real life pets and not like soldiers. It won't even be enchantable, because it needs to have durability to be enchantable and I doubt they will make it have durability. It will probably be just a clone of horse armor.

@@retrolynx5191 If a wolf falls in lava, it won't realistically matter if it is wearing armor or not, it will still die before it gets out. Same with creeper explosions, they deal so much damage that protection doesn't matter - the dog will usually die no matter what. Like, even in diamond armor, a player can still be easily killed in one shot by a creeper from close range. I doubt that wolf armor will have the same damage reduction as diamond armor. Also, armor doesn't protect against fall damage at all, so wolves falling to their deaths is still going to happen. Overall, wolves will still easily die on hazardous adventures, so basically nobody will want to bring them along. People only use horse armor because they get it for free as loot. I don't think that anyone would rather have horse armor compared to something actually useful. Finally, I don't want to have a wolf. I don't care about wolf armor. I'm never going to use it. At least the other items can be used by a wider range of players.

these were my exact thoughts during this whole situation when i watched the crab video: damn that’s really cool that you can get extra reach, probably going to be an offhand thing though so you can only use it while building because you will probably have a shield in hand in a battle… so far this is the best option then armadillo comes out and i watch the video and think: holy shit that’s so good, dog armour is perfect who wouldn’t want that, and atleast something new is happening in the savanna that hasn’t been touched since it’s release basically… this is my favourite option then the penguin video: ok, i like the penguin it’s cute, i can tell it’s modeled after an emperor penguin because of the yellow on top… but there isn’t much use for fast boats when we have ice travel, i wish minecarts were faster i watch DanTDMs video about the mob vote options: he’s right actually, i’m probably not taking my dog outside of my home so what’s the point of dog armour except a home invasion, i guess the crab claw is probably a better option… but stylish dogs finally i decided the crab is probably best

I basically went through this thought process as well, but I came to the conclusion that I would probably vote armadillo because the savannah needs a biome specific mob and it’s cute. Plus ngl, crabs are kinda creepy.

There is already a reach distance attribute. It modifies your block reach. There isn't one for entities though, but the crab video said only block (placing?) distance.

Map makers can use commands to build fast If crab arm could also be used as a weapon that does low damage but has extra reach I would use it as it forces the enemie to fall back

In my opinion, I think this year's mob vote was more fair, just because the options were all random regular animals with (at least from how they were presented) pretty simple functions/uses, so at least it won't feel as bad for the two that don't win the vote, it won't feel like we're losing mobs that could really add a lot to the game or simply losing creatures with really good designs BUT, I also think they went way too simple, because looking at other animals they've added in other updates, it doesn't feel like there's any reason why any of these should/could not be in the game, and, if whichever mob wins remains this simple it will feel like an insignificant addition and also make the vote feel more pointless.

Yeah, they could've added all three mobs. A mob vote should be to choose between 3 actually useful and fun mobs that can improve the game in many ways. Or at least make a mob vote for modders where they can publish their proposals to Minecraft and people vote for each
