What I would have given to meet Rutger Hauer . When asked who my favorite actor is ,his name fell from my lips. He spoke a thousand words with the smallest change of expression, with a stare he could make your blood freeze or fill your heart with soul crushing love. His fame came not from his antics or through the frenzied adoration of teenage girls though I'd known a few such fans. It came from his presence and his eyes, his eyes have all the seeming of a demons that is dreaming and the lamp light o'ar him streaming threw his shadow on the floor, and my soul from out that shadow which lies floating above the floor shall be lifted....nevermore.

Jan Skácelík I disagree. To the people who loved him, he was all the star that we needed. He had amazing performances for otherwise meh roles (Hobo with a Shotgun is wonderful fanservice). He had an amazing family, his friends loved him, he never had any negativity about him on sets (that I found). Dude was the real deal, on screen and off. We could take a few pages from his chapters and apply it to our own.

In 50 years, I sincerely doubt ANYONE will be going over Dwayne Johnson's career with a fine-tooth comb. Rutger, on the other, will forever be a wonderful, mad genius of an actor and of a man. I'll never be able to shake his hand, but maybe I don't need to. I'll always have his tears in rain.

Some people make it to big stardom, some don't, but you know what all those big stars need? Great support actors that help make them stars. Without that they are nothing. For me, Rutger Hauer fits into that category, in the same way that Bill Paxton did. They always put in solid work, occasionally getting to shine in a lead but most notable as that support.

I got to drive Rutger Hauer from airport to hotel in Vancouver, Canada in the early 90's. He was in Vancouver to film _Arctic Blue_ which was released in 1993 and the limo company I worked for then had contacts with the production companies in town so we drove lots of movie folks from airport to hotel and hotel to airport, about a 20 minute drive. One day I'm in the office in the afternoon and the boss says I have an interesting job for you tonight, Rutger Hauer is coming in. I thought that's great, I really liked Rutger in _Nighthawks_ with Stallone, and _Blade Runner_ and _The Hitcher_ etc. I tell the boss the car is clean and good to go and he says you're not taking the limo to get him. The production company let us know in advance that Rutger travels with a few hundred pounds of luggage, big luggage lol. I was like what the hell? It's a long time ago now but I think what he had was workout stuff ... something like that. Heavy stuff. So the boss says I'm going to pick him up a in a minivan! I couldn't believe it but the luggage was such that we were told it wouldn't fit in a limo. So I take the minivan to the airport and Rutger comes out from the customs area and yeah, there's a lot of luggage. So we go to the van, just the two of us, no agent or assistants with him or anything like that. We load the luggage into the van, me and my buddy Rutger lol, and off we go to the hotel. I can tell you he seemed lubricated, definitely a few drinks on the flight I think, but what a nice guy. He started the conversation and we talked the whole way to the hotel. And I remember exactly what he was talking about even though I had no idea what he was talking about. He was talking about global warming! Wild, eh, in 1993. So, if you look at one of the movies he was in which was released in 1992, _Split Second_ , well that movie was about global warming and that's what he was talking about. I hadn't heard about global warming at that point so I remember thinking he might be a bit crazy. He was talking about polar ice melting, floods etc. If you look at the plot of _Split Second_ that's exactly what it was all about. He seemed passionate about the topic, he was really taking his time to explain it to me and even though the drive was only 20 minutes it was a very cool night for me to drive Rutger Hauer. One of my favourite limo jobs ever, for sure. Two days later I'm at the front of the hotel I drove him to, doing a different job. I'm waiting outside and who walks out from the lobby? Rutger and a beautiful lady. I look over and see him at around the same time he sees me and you know the look in someones face when they recognize you, there's the look of recognition and then a smile. Well, he walks towards me, he is not my job that night, and he says hi and I said hi, we shook hands and he walked on with his lady. I stood there for a few moments just thinking to myself, how frigging cool was that! Why couldn't any of my friends have seen that? Lol. He recognized me and was such a nice guy he came over to say hi. That was 26 years ago and I've never forgotten that night. I think that little meet and greet in front of the hotel was better than the 20 minute drive. Anyway, I'd like to go on record as saying Rutger Hauer was not a Hollywood jerk that I had the misfortune of driving on many occasions, he was modest and one cool dude. RIP Rutger Hauer. -

He had a very distinctive and iconic voice... one that would make the reading aloud of something as bland as a shopping list, sound weighty and epic. Coupled with a very versatile accent that - from an acting perspective - could plausibly fit many national and ethnic backgrounds... he was someone who could play many roles, and did so with great originality and a unique stamp that was entirely his own... *Thank You for being “Rutger Hauer.” 🤝 No one else could have done it like you...* ✌️😎
