RIPON - A full tour of Ripon, North Yorkshire!
We take a walk around Ripon City Centre and Ripon Cathedral as we head to North Yorkshire, England for a look around!
We take the GImbal Walk TV cameras up into North Yorkshire for a walk around the streets of the city of Ripon after many of our subscribers requested we film there. We take in the Cathedral as well as Kirkgate, the Market Square, the Police and Prison Museum and the Workhouse Museum.
Ripon is the third-smallest city in England and the smallest in Yorkshire, by population.
According to the 2011 United Kingdom Census it had a population of 16,702, an increase on the 2001 United Kingdom Census figure of 15,922.
Ripon is located 11 miles (18 km) south-west of Thirsk, 16 miles (26 km) south of Northallerton and 12 miles (19 km) north of Harrogate. As well as its racecourse and cathedral, Ripon is a tourist destination because of its proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of the Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey.
Ripon is an unspoilt cathedral city is a North Yorkshire gem, balancing a rich cultural heritage with exciting contemporary living. With its imposing cathedral, fascinating museums and a bustling market square, there is plenty to entertain the visitor. And skip just 10 miles in any direction and you'll discover a wealth of first class visitor attractions in the surrounding beautiful Dales countryside.
Ripon is a cathedral city in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. The city is located at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Ure, the Laver and Skell. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The city is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral, which is architecturally significant, as well as the Ripon Racecourse and other features such as its market.

I’ve lived in Ripon my whole life so it’s really nice to see the place through someone else’s eyes. Also my granddad saved that cabbie shelter, something I’ve always been proud of!

Another gem and more memories. While courting my wife to be we had a trip out with my mum and dad in 1972. We stopped in Ripon, had a look round and bought a Yorkshire curd tart for a quick lunch which we ate at Aysgarth Falls, sadly they must have been on holiday as they were more like the Aysgarth Trickle. We carried on over the moors to Bowness on Windermere where we had a trip on the “lake” before having a meal and returning home. Both our parents are long gone and we are in the twilight of ours, thanks for jogging our memories. P.S. I might have mentioned this before, or it might have been Lets Walk which we also watch, my wife wondered if you trip over each other as you seem to like to film similar places. For those not living in places with Viking history, places such as Kirkgate, etc. mentioned in your videos, the gate isn’t an opening in a fence but a road, from the Norse gate. My nearest town of Huddersfield has a Kirkgate, Westgate, Northgate and Southgate but no Eastgate, The village where I live is Kirkheaton, in local dialect known as Yetton, the name Heaton comes from Old English "Heah" meaning high and "tun" meaning settlement along with Old Norse "Kirk" meaning church, at 650 feet above sea level I think we qualify.

I wish I'd had more time there. I took a local bus from Knaresborough where I was staying to Harrogate, and then a double decker from there to Ripon. I spent some time in the cathedral, but just missed out on a tour of it. By that time it was getting on and I had to get back. Next time I'll spend longer there. It's a beautiful town. And the burger in Wetherspoon's wasn't too bad. Apparently you can walk from there to Fountains Abbey, which I'd like to do someday. The famous trainers... we call them running shoes, or just runners here.

Oh that took me back. Visited many times (not for a long time now though) as I have friends who live there. Recognised a few of the pubs we visited, even saw the road the led to their house. Does the Ripon Hornblower still blow the horn at 9pm every evening in the square ? My friend's husband was originally from Masham and when they got married there, the gates of the church were locked and they had to throw coins over the gate to be let out, great tradition

I have been coming to ripon since I was a toddler. l love the place and as it’s only about an hour’s drive from my home we go to ripon at least once a month, quite often we will stay for the weekend in one of the local hotels. If you ever revisit Ripon you should do the canal walk with it’s basin and locks or along the riverside walk through the town, down by the water rat pub, both are lovely walks in the summer!

Been to Ripon a couple of times and inside the Cathedral is wonderful, especially going down into the ancient crypt church. The market is great with lots of treats to be had. At night in the square they have the traditional hornblower doing his thing (I wonder if it continued all way through the various lockdowns or was 100's of years of tradition broken, probably someone from Ripon could let us know).
@simonh8748
@simonh8748 Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, the hornblower tradition did carry on the lockdown, in their own back gardens. Out of LD, it’s back in the square around the obelisk at 9 every night (I hear this from my flat!), after which the hornblower gives a brief talk on the history of the ceremony. Just a point of fact, there’s a lady hornblower too! The clip is good, but there’s much more here that can’t be included in 20 odd minutes, a day/evening trip is recommended. I love it here. True, it’s not without its idiots, but show me somewhere that isn’t.
@Pinchton
@Pinchton Жыл бұрын
@@simonh8748 Think last time went was a lady hornblower that was doing it. Glad it went on, even though done in their back yards, for would've been a great shame that hundreds years of tradition didn't go ahead. Must admit times been spent a lot of time at the Cathedral and some time in the pubs around the square area. Would love to visit again in the near future and the only pity is that there is no train station (know you can get train then bus to there) with in the city. If there was one I think you would get more visitors. Times I visited was with a friend who drove but would love to visit on my own and see some of the city that haven't seen with my friend. I ave done a few videos on my channel about my visits to Ripon (2016 and 2017).

Yorkshire is bigger than many countries with a population of around 5 million. And it certainly feels like a country. For those born here its Yorkshire first as identity and English or British second. And unlike many English counties which you can cross and not notice, once here its a few hours before you've passed through.
