At first I was skeptical of her character, I'm completely fine with diversity I just hate when characters are their "race first", when its done that way it feels like a dumb diversity ploy. What i found amazing was that technically, when tony "died", he was replaced by two people: a black girl (rir) and a white dude (doom). And in fact, nly one of them carry the mantle "iron man" (riri is iron, so she's distinct, like she-hulk or ms marvel). Yet who did people complain about? The genocidal maniac that tried to conquer the world? Nope: the black girl. But they are not against race switch... (personally, that being said, i don't really like Riri, because i feel her personality is too close of all the "Yay science" character we have had over the last few years and who at this point might as well have magical powers: moon girl, wasp, amadeus cho, riri, etc....).

You probably have only seen the MCU movies. Yes, Tony Stark was an OG marvel character, (one of the first, but just understand that in the comics, Tony Stark starts out just like Riri Williams (or Ironheart) I am glad that the MCU has this diversity and that and African-American girl has come this far relating into being a great super hero. Tony Stark was a risky choice for the MCU said the creators. But Tony worked out. No doubt, I LOVE Tony Stark and nobody can replace, him just give people like Ironheart a chance to be in the MCU like everybody else.

Amazing Zero, first of all, War Machine isn't the longest supporting character in the Iron Man's history. And you should also don't refer to him as War Machine when you're talking about for how long he's been around, since Rhodey didn't became War Machine until 1992, after his first appearance in 1979. The longest supporting characters of Iron Man is Happy Hoggan and Pepper Potts. And she never was damsel in distress. She rarely got into any of the conflicts or the battles. She most of the time was working in the office. The purpose of her character was to be a good friend of Tony that's always there to let him know that there people who love and care for him. When Marvel made her into this bland archetype of super self-confident superheroine, they made her unlikable. She was the best in the late 90's, during Kurt Busiek's run.

Enjoyed the vid, although I disagree with a few of your premises on certain plot events but that's unimportant. Riri's personally my favorite Marvel character atm, I started reading Marvel just prior to her first issue so I don't have a pre-existing stake in the stories to be bothered that she's temporarily taking over for Tony; although I can understand that sentiment (I felt that way when the Star Wars story got rebooted, removing most of my favorite characters). Looking forward to watching the character grow further and glad she's in Bendis' line of work as I don't think there's a marvel writer I'd trust more.

The issue I have with characters like Riri and Miles Morales (even Bucky Barnes and Dick Grayson for a short period) is not that they're female or a different ethnicity but that instead of the writers trying to create a new superheroes we can love with those characters, they just usurp or straight up plagiarize the identity of an existing hero who we associate eith a specific chracter. It seems lazy, forced, and a cheap way to refresh the character or create new stories. It's like replacing my Dog with another Dog of another breed and saying "it's still a dog, why are you upset?".

But on a more relevant note, Marvel is replacing most of its well known male white heroes with diverse characters to try to garner sales boosts due to publicity. It does not sit well with long time readers because these characters have decades of established history and character development. They earned their spots at the top. I'm open to the idea of a new Iron Man...for now. Rhody was Iron Man for a bit, and it was very well done. But Riri (to me) was another SJW diversity. And you know something? See, I HATE this character, but as far as I can tell online, my reason is unique. To me, Riri reeks of Bendis' ego. Taken on paper, she's a young, black, genius girl who is able to follow in Iron Man's footsteps (kind of). She's a random new character that is tossed into this universe. Now take a character named Lila Rhodes. She's Rhodey's neice. She's also a young, black, genius girl who already has experience with Iron Man and War Machine (at one point she was piloting the Iron Patriot suit remotely from a coffee shop bathroom). Why isn't SHE Iron Heart? She shares the key qualities of Riri except for one major thing. Bendis did not create her. I would have loved to see this character return and integrate herself deeper into the Iron Man story. She's already connected to the hero and, after Bendis killed War Machine, how nice would it have been to have his niece step up? Instead, we're given this stranger who Bendis insists is brilliant and better than Iron Man in every way.

Riri Williams'(amazing book), Green Lanterns(love the two lanterns in that book), Spider-Man(Miles Morales is one of my favorite characters), Nova(Sam Alexander is a fantastic character), All New Wolverine(love Laura more than Logan). These books have diverse characters and they are amazing. People need to understand that new characters don't sell, hell Old characters don't sell. I think she seems interesting enough as a character. However I kind of understand where all the negativity is coming from, as it feels Marvel is pushing existing characters out to replace them with others. And whilst they are diverse it's coming off as very forced. I don't think there's anything wrong with changing things up as long as it's done right. But I personally don't feel as if they've done it to the best of their abilities. I'm no expert when it comes to comics and I don't think I could come up with a better way to do it than them. However I can see both sides, I'm open to change. But only when it's done right. I mean as I said she does seem like an interesting character. But I dunno, it feels like they're just benching characters. I don't want to think that, because it's always good to think they're doing it to spice things up. But I guess unless someone directly says something, then it's speculation. I only hope that they can do this well as who knows? It might turn out well with just a bit of a rocky start.

Mitternacht~ ex Marvel isn't actually "replacing" the characters. For example, The new thor: Created a cool new thor arch(odinson), kamala did not replace ms. marvel, and riri is just iron mans protégé. None of the characters were ever replaced. The only one I really don't like is the new hulk because he basically did replace the old one.

I looked at the most recent sales numbers and I am pretty surprised. Invincible Iron Man sold 38,746 copies in March. Which means Riri out sold Old Man Logan who sold 38,151, Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows which sold 37,508, Mighty Thor that sold 36,106, and last but not least Infamous Iron Man which sold 28,319. Once again due to how much people were saying they did not like her character I throught her book wouldn't be doing well. But, numbers don't lie. Amazing Zero this so much. Remember when people saw Mosaic and were like "he's diversity done right we'll totally support him" for awhile and when his book came out barely a peep. I swear if Kid Kaiju's book meets the same fate I'll pissed. ok, that "fencing" is bullshit... i practice fencing, there are several types of swords, and the ones that are used for fencing are just a few, mostly the ones with french and anatomic holders and normal saber.... each one have a completely different style of combat and they look almost exactly the same except for some minor differences.... if Riri was taught fencing and only fencing she would have no idea how to use that type of "lightsaber katana" because it's a completely different style with no relation with the normal fencing: you hold it differently and the attacks are different, that completely changes every single aspect of the fight... in other words, if you say someone doing fencing knows how to use "swords" as in "all normal swords" you are full of shit, it is not so simple, plus individual training (your father and you) on sword fighting is an unpractical method, you need to fight several competitors in order to improve since all you are doing is adapting to only one type of swordsman.

But then again, look at comics with yeah, swords and especially martial arts. Comic book characters/superheroes are all autistic people who pick up stuff and masters everything, even though stuff like that doesn't work like that. Comics are dumb like that.

Personally, I hated her when she got introduced. She had no character, was just the typical teenager who happend to be teck smart. She was just crap and than got put in as THE NEW IRON MAN. Just terrible. But now that the comic is actually going and the character is slowly getting fleshed out, she is pretty okey. She is a fun read that I will pick up every week. Wich is better than what it seemed before. Tho putting her next to Tony (even if in AI form) was a horrible call because well, Tony is great and outshines her at any moment he is also there.

It would have been better to have her paired up with DOOM. Doesn't make sense to have Doom become the new ironman then have 0 interaction with the rest of the superhero community. Riri is the same way but at least she's being introduced to the champions in her latest issue. If she doesn't join them her book will likely fade away since she has extremely limited exposure to the superhero community as a whole. Most people pick up new books when they are introduced to a character through crossovers. Ms. Marvel is the most popular teen hero Marvel has right now because she's been in twice as many issues as her own series, so has the necessary exposure.

This is a GREAT run - I've been reading this thing from the jump. Also been collecting comics for 20 years. Question for the haters: If the comic book character is a non-white male, they're automatically a SJW trope? How ironically fragile and intellectually lazy. It's also funny that it's only the comics with people of color that have bad writing👀. Some of you in the comments are owning your racial bias - which I respect more. Racial and gender representation has always been "forced" in this country, in every way. Part of it comes down to issues with Civil War II, because she was introduced in the back of Iron Man before the event finished, but it took place after. So she was introduced as the new Iron Man before Iron Man was even gone. Yes she uses the name Iron Heart, but we didn't know that at the time.
