Once I played a game as Austria. Managed to get the Germany player friendly enough so he wouldn't attack me, then started expanding wherever I could- Switzerland, Slovakia, Hungary. Then, I attacked Romania. Romania had vital Titanium mines, a resource I was struggling to obtain. As I was fighting Romania, Hittite, a massive Turkish Empire, attacked Romania at the same time. I rushed the Titanium mines. I was threatened by Hittite to leave Romania. I was so desperate for the Titanium that I refused the Turkish demands. Thus began a long, 5-year war. Hittite launched multiple tank groups, far larger then mine. I fell back to Vienna, which I fortified. I began mass-producing tanks, as I was losing them constantly. This Hittite player was decent. He launched constant assaults on Vienna, losing his tanks but quickly whittling down my manpower. He used Artillery extensively, although I sent raiding parties out from Vienna to destroy Artillery where I could. He made AA to shoot down my aircraft, important to the defense of Vienna. At some point, he destroyed every last tank in Vienna, but because I was producing replacements he was never able to take the city. Things worsened midway into the war when he captured cities near Vienna, destroying my factories. This sent me into a rush to rebuild them within the safety of Vienna. The most vital resource was Electronics- In order to keep up with the massive amounts of tanks I was producing, I needed multiple Electronics factories, in order to sell the Electronics to the AI. With the destruction of all but the one in Vienna, I was losing Electronics fast. I switched to Socialism and upgraded the tech that improves factory resource output to survive. The war continued for another 1 year. Hittite abandoned conventional strategies, and would instead launch waves of tanks against Vienna, severely damaging the garrison each time. Even with a draft in-place, I couldn't get enough manpower to properly build and maintain tank divisions. Luckily, I managed to get a trade deal with Germany- I would buy Manpower from him, and give Money in return. This deal kept me alive. The war would last another 2 years after this event. It was near the end of the war, and tides were turning- My tank garrisons grew to an impressive size, and it was clear to the Hittite player that the strategy of sending waves of tanks was no longer effective. I began reconquering lost cities, even occupying cities I never owned in the first place. The Hittite player gave up. He said that, in exchange for Romania, he would end this war with a white peace. I should mention that previously he made claims such as "your country won't exist after this war" and "I have more the enough manpower to keep attacking you". I accepted the deal. Thus ended the Austrian-Hittite war. The war, funnily enough, mirrored real-life history- Austrian defenders holding Vienna to their last breath against an Overwhelming Turkish foe. Reinforcements from another nation coming in just in time to save the day. (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Vienna_(1529)#Aftermath). The game continued. The German and Hittite players both eventually left. Austria suffered greatly from the war, but just a few years later marched through Central and Western Europe. About 10 years after the war was ended, the Holy Roman Empire moved it's capitol to Rome. Austria, once a weak state ravaged by a desperate war, had formed the HRE and conquered every nation required for the Roman Empire. I don't know about Holy, but The HRE became a lot more Imperial, and a lot more Roman as well.

i got nukes as north korea and owned all but russian uranium deposits in small colonies within nations, and had an epic war against swedish and dutch empires respectively, also the nuke silos in swaziland saved me from losing all my nukes as they couldnt snipe the silos

Rome is a really fun formable. You start out as a nation decent enough where you can get yourself going pretty easily early on, but still weaker then normal European superpowers. You have to contend with multiple players, and expand EVERYWHERE. Don't expand into Western Europe? Expect France, Germany, or the UK to dominate. Ignore the Balkans? Expect some huge Middle Eastern nation to come in, take it, and hold it. How about Africa? Either other European nations get it first, Egypt comes in and wipes the whole northern continent out, or if you REALLY ignore it Nigeria reaches it first. Your only hope for forming Rome is to play aggressively- Expand into any nation you see. Get tanks first. Attack Player nations when they're weak so they can't compete with you later on. Pull every trick in the book to increase Stability because you're going to be losing it fast. And even then, that's not always enough- I have had multiple games ruined by the US invading nations I needed, and almost lost a few when Qing took out Russia and began expanding into Europe.
