Sandman seems to be the most powerful one who can bring to life anything he imagines, then I would say it's going to be Jack Frost. Sandman was the only one Pitch was afraid of, not only Sandman could turn back all Pitch's nightmares but he fought him one vs one so easily, the only reason Pitch hit him was when Sandman was distracted by nightmares all around him.

There are theories of why Jack doesn't need believers the same way the others do. The two I agree with are: Jack was young enough to be considered a child when he died so his own belief is sustaining him, and because Jack is an elemental as well as a Guardian. Guardian of fun and the spirit of winter. So just like one can never be rid of Pitch because there will always be fear and darkness, Jack can't fade because while fun can be taken away no one can get totally rid of cold and ice. Santa embodies wonder so, if everyone became jaded, that would disappear. Same with Tooth fairy and childhood memories. Their power is directly tied to humans. So they disappear.

Actually its simpler then that. It says at the beginning of the movie the man in the moon is choosing a New Guardian. But Jack Frost already has powers. The man in the moon named Jack the Spirit of winter. Spirits are, generally speaking intangible. There for cant be seen while being the spirit of winter gives him all the powers of winter. Be they for a simple snow day, or a deadly blizzard, but Jack being young mostly wants to use them for fun because what kid wouldn't, then the man in the moon chose him to be the new guardian in essence giving him a promotion, with it comes the ability for people to see you but only if they believe in you. And before you ask yes Pitch is a guardian as well but he's a dark guardian or an anti guardian he protects and guards there fear. Which when done right could have protected them by keeping them safe from a lion for example, your afraid of it so you dont go near it. But pitch went power hungry and caused the dark ages. Requiring the man in moon to appoint other guardians to take back the power pitch had built up. But being a guardian is a double edge sword, because while being believed in actually increases the powers you where already granted. Lose of the belief takes back not only the power boost but the initial power you where granted. Because you clearly failed in your appointed duties.

25:27 Earlier in the film, Pitch explained that the only catch to being a guardian is that if enough children stop believing, their powers fade. But since Jack isn't technically an official guardian yet, those rules don't really apply to him.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that you see Jack's 'center' from the very beginning. You see him having fun with his new powers and then you see him having fun with the kids, even though they can't see him. All we need to know (and Jack needs to know) is there from the beginning. It just takes some time to realize that's what it is :3

Also, on top of that, Bunny (or Aster, as he is called in the books), is very uptight and stiff and doesn't completely understand humans at all. He flat-out refuses to help the current Guardians (Katherine and North) defeat Pitch in order to save Nightlight and the children of Santoff Claussen until Katherine bribes him with the egg of her Snow Goose, Kailash, which is the only egg Bunny doesn't have in his collection. He and North also get into a "do not/do too" argument right before they go into battle that ends up putting Katherine into danger. It is confirmed cannon that Aster is teased mercilessly for his green coat and egg glasses and uptight personality for years until he loosens up a bit. It's entirely likely (because of how North said the "you should've seen Bunny" in a jesting way, that he was referring more to Bunny's uptight and stiff personality as well as his obsession with eggs and chocolate instead of the more serious and sad fact that Bunny was the last survivor of his race.

It's an amazing detail how Pitch goes after Sandman first because both have powers related to dreams and sand. It's also perfect that Jack is the most capable against Pitch, because Jack's center is fun- the opposite of fear. I find this interesting, as both Jack and Pitch are myths about mischievous or devious entities that interfere with life. Where Jack is just the randomness of Nature in action, though, Pitch stems from our deepest and darkest fears- and suffers from them as well. Memory. Pitch doesn't want to be forgotten, while Jack is trying to remember.

Fun facts!: There are a few comics made about the Guardians and Pitch by the movies creators(some official, some unofficial that they did later). One comic has Pitch offered a position of a Guardian by North/Santa, though he misunderstood at first and thought that the Guardian's would reward the children and he would scare them into being good. When he realized what it meant to be a Guardian, he eventually flat-out refused to let children be in control of his fate, finding it incredulous to be asked to back down after millenia of terrorizing people, then stormed out, telling the Man in the Moon(who was his only company in the Dark Ages) his attempt at replacing him was a betrayal, forever cementing himself as an enemy of the Guardians. One prequel comic has Pitch Black befriend a homeless child. It was a boy with a cleft palate living in the middle ages, who was rejected for his minor deformity.and at one point the boy tells him that he's not scared of dying in some ways (e.g., peacefully in his sleep) but he is scared of dying in some violent, painful way. Pitch was the only one who would talk to him as if he were a normal person, albeit Pitch makes it clear that he found amusement in waiting to see him get rejected.Decades later, Tooth tells Pitch that the boy is dead. While Pitch claims not to care, there is a hint of something else as he muses that since he, Pitch, didn't know about it, it means that the boy must have died without fear. In the comic, Tooth stares at the boy's baby tooth and wonders if telling Pitch about how important he was to the boy could have reformed him. One story has him influence the cosmic horror writer HP Lovecraft in a conversation with him(a really good one).

Actually, Sandy was the last Guardian signed into oath. He is the oldest along with Bunny (though we're not entirely sure which one is older), but he only was signed in after the others. In all technicality, Nightlight was the first Guardian (my favorite character from the books) because he was signed into an oath by Tsar and Tsarina Lunanoff to protect their son, who later becomes the Man in the Moon, and then North and Katherine and Ombric are sworn in, and then Bunny, and then Tooth, and then Sandy is last.

They're absolutely amazing books- 10/10. Even the picture books are so interesting and provide lots of backstory. I absolutely loved this movie when it came out, and when I read the books and read about the character Nightlight, I was absolutely drawn in despite my interest being specifically for the characters in the movie. Some of the lines in the movie also hit super different- with Pitch's "longing for a family" line, the way Pitch is terrified of Sandy, why Lunar/Manny doesn't talk to Jack, and Bunny and North's rivalry. It also better explains why Jack (on top of being a seasonal spirit and not a Guardian... at least not in this form) doesn't need belief to hold onto his powers. I would definitely recommend reading them- they're fun and whimsical in a way that most children's stories are, but they provide lots of character development and do interesting worldbuilding and plots that make it function more like a young adult series. Personally, though, my entire family loves the series, and I find it good for all ages.

If you want more on the story your should check out the book series this is based off of: The Guardians of Childhood. There are five books, going into the stories of all of the guardians (this movie came out before the Jack Frost book, so this is a deviation but it does the books justice!) and the story of Pitch Black and the Man in the Moon. This movie was so magical, and it made me feel like a child again myself! Jack Frost is, unfortunately, not as well known a character as Santa Claus or any of the others (Sandman is popular thanks to the song "Mr. Sandman"). The first time I ever heard the name was in the Christmas Song, at the line "Jack Frost nipping at your nose" (referring to the chill in the air). In one story, Jack Frost is the king of the Winter Spirits and is described as a kind fellow who wants to help children, whereas a king of a neighboring kingdom, King Winter, is cruel to them. The story tells the origins of how Jack Frost began to oversee the coloring of the leaves of the forest in fall. There's an old claymation movie called Jack Frost, as well that tells another story.

This is one of my favorite films since it was released in 2012 . I absolutely Love this movie... it touches everything about childhood that needs to be protected and cherished . Those are forming , important , and fleeting years that help us all become who we grow to be . Since the release of "Rise of The Guardians" in 2012 I have watched it often..... no matter what month of the year it is . The voice cast were excellent.... and Jude Law as the villain was shockingly great at it . I was very surprised to learn that he was Pitch Black... did not see that coming . I am really glad that you were so invested in "Rise of The Guardians" Tim... your reactions and commentary do add a lot more to enjoy . Not only in this movie . I hope you know the work and fun you put into your channel here shows and it goes a long way . Thank you again Tim .

I always thought that the guardians had been so used to having their powers for so long and that’s why it took such a toll on them. Meanwhile jack had been building his power and had grown used to having no one believe in him so it didn’t affect him and he got a boost from finally being believed in.

They'll probably do part two for two reasons: the first is that How To Train Your Dragon is over so Dreamworks doesn't have any major franchises to compete with upcoming Disney and Pixar releases, so that's why the Guardians have to go back; and the second reason is: William Joyce himself has already mentioned on his Instagram that he is working on a Guardians TV series, and if the series is a success, then there will be a new movie.

Great movie recommend checking out the books. They may be for kids but the world building is incredible. Recommend checking out Guardians of Gahoole it’s also based on a kids book, but it’s plot and design are beautiful and they have the band Owl City singing a song for owls. Oh and if you want more Jack Frost I recommend going down the rabbit hole that is the Big Four-Jack, Hiccup, Merida and Rapunzel.

At one point Pitch Black tells Jack about how believing in the Guardians works, how there's a catch and if enough people stop believing in you your powers start to fade, and if they all stop believing in you then eventually so will you, Jack wasn't a Guardian until the end so he always kept his powers

To answer your question about Jack's staff and his powers, he does technically need it. But a common misunderstanding is that Jack's power comes from the staff. It doesn't. He's still an elemental and a seasonal spirit without it and can do small things like fix/make ice, create frost firns, make it snow, and as you saw in the movie, make frost patterns come to life and make "happy flakes". But he can't fly or do any large magic without it, which is why he couldn't climb out of the ice ravine. It works almost like a conduit. Something for him to channel his magic through. And Jack is a seasonal spirit, so he doesn't exactly need believers to have his powers like the others, but having believers would make him a lot more powerful than he already is. Also, I just want to put it out there that Jack is 14 years old, but made to look 17. He's a child. They really put child death and abandonment in a movie for kids. As well as blatant manipulation tactics. It's so angsty.

This is based on a series of books by William Joyce where each book is an origin story for one of these Guardians, so if you want to know about the Man in the Moon you can get that book. Dreamworks often does a TV series for its animated movies (like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon) which help fill in background on the characters, but I think they decided not to do one for the Guardians. Joyce did do a short film of the Man in the Moon (2005) but I don't think it's available anywhere.

Including *Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, *The Little Drummer Boy, *Santa Claus is Coming to Town, *Frosty the Snowman, *Twas the Night Before Christmas, *The Year Without a Santa Claus, and *Jack Frost. They also made one of my favorite non-Christmas related films, *Journey Back to Oz. Although on the Wiki page someone done fudged up and said it was *Return to Oz, which it is NOT. That's Disney. They also made *The Last Unicorn which is phenomenal. But I recommend the Christmas specials which are usually only thirty to sixty minutes long.

7:25 No Sandman as in the sand that you find in your eyes when you wake up? He throws dust or sand in your eyes to make you sleep and he brings you dreams. He's a Scandinavian and German folklore figure, I think the stories about him were generally mouth-to-mouth so he's been around longer than he's been written about, though I think there's supposed to be a reference to him in a German dictionary from 1771 saying 'Der Sandman kommt' (The sandman comes). There's a version of him in a lesser known Hans Christian Anderson fairytale called Ole Lukøje where instead he carries dreams for good children and no dreams for bad children in magic umbrellas, but a decade or so earlier E.T.A. Hoffman (author of the original Nutcracker story that ended up inspiring the ballet) wrote a version where a boy hears the traditional version and doesn't believe it and then also hears a more sinister version where the sandman throws sand into the eyes of bad children who won't sleep to take their eyes and feed them to his children on the dark side of the moon - I think Hoffman made that up for his story in a making a variation on a well-known saying and folklore image, and it's mostly sort of a memory of a childhood fear to a somewhat narcissistic protagonist who in spite of the love of his fiancé and friends remains fixated on memories and people of past childhood traumas and is convinced first that he sees old enemies and secondly that no one understands him (it's a short story but there's a lot of detail in it). Apart from this movie he's most recently seen in the two German children's shows (one from the West which officially discontinued after the wall came down and one from the East which was shown in the former West once the wall came down, both versions can be purchased and watched today, I've seen a bit of both, they're both really cute) and of course there's the Metallica song 'Enter Sandman' and the Neil Gaiman story, all taken from German-Scandenavian folklore. Either way if you wake up tomorrow and find sand in your eyes it means he's visited you and helped you sleep well and happy.

If you want more backstory on the Man in the Moon and the other Guardians, you should know that this movie is based on a book series called The Guardians of Childhood by Joyce Williams. It would be considered the prequel to this movie. It tells the backstories of EVERYONE, including Pitch and the Man in the Moon. They are all more closely connected than you think! It's an amazing read and I highly recommend it! You will be blown away by Pitch Black's story, I guarantee it!

I never really look up as to why Jack's power didn't got affected, but I just like to think that maybe he simply wasn't a guardian then. He simply was just given the power or chosen by the moon but he never got or need connection to the kids. That's why even when people believe in him or not, it doesn't matter bcs he wasn't a guardian thats purpose was to protect the kids and power fueled by their beliefs.

@@RealElevenTimes So basically you have the Pooka race (E. Asters race) who are born immortal though they are self-sustaining in that if they do not believe in themselves they will fade, help husband planets. They braised the first 'constellation' families. Constellation families are being born mortal who become self-sustaining immortals and who have the ability to make others immortal so long as they have a role. There are two types of these immortals- Spirits of the Season (Winter, Summer, Autumn and Spring along with a Mother or Father Nature) who did not need belief to sustain them as they were attuned to the season of their planet itself. The other is Legend Immortals who survive off of the belief of the people. If they are not believed in then they will fade. Along with these there were Dream Pirates and, worse, Fearlings. Because so much of their communities relied on belief fear and doubt such as the fearlings could destabilize them quickly. Eventually the constellations families managed to round up all of the pirates and fearlings and locked them away. Standing guard at the door of their prison was the revered general Kosmosis Pitchner. Unfortunately by locking the Fearlings away the constellations had only empowered them, by locking them away they confirmed the view that they were a threat which made them a threat. They whispered to Kosmosis in his missing daughters voice and tricked him into opening the door. He was almost entirely consumed by the Fearlings who fused with him and Pitch Black was born. Pitch and the fearlings decimated the Constellation families and the immortals, murdered all of the Pooka aswell. The only survivor was the young child of the Lunaoff constellation, the one who we come to know as the man on the moon and the one responsible for raising every immortal on Earth. The Guardians along with Nightlight (a personal guardian to the man on the moon) and the new Mother Nature of Earth (who was Pitchs long lost daughter and for whom the man within would not allow the Fearlings to harm) along with Mother Goose manage to trap Pitch and all the Fearlings on Earth. This was done by tricking Pitch into thinking the Man on the Moon could make him more powerful, which he did in the form of turning him into a legendary immortal. The Guardia. Then preceded to erase all traces of him from the Earth, though the Fearlings still roamed free. After all no one believes in the boogeyman.

I think the reason Pitch target Sandy first because Pitch's pain power is only fear and after the Dark Ages, he just hid and learned to corrupt/transform Sandy's dreams into nightmares (noticed the golden eyes of mares whilst having black body) so when the children got courage to face their fears through fun (Jack's center) so it debug Pitch's corruption and the dark dust/mares turned back into dreams which bought Sandy back. Sandy can't be affected by belief I guess like Pitch and Jack since like fear would always remain intact in every human, dreams also stays intact. Jack can't be effected because he became a spirit first (after death) while the rest of the guardians were simply transformed. Sandy is the op since there's no way a person can't fall asleep and not dream.

I really feel for Jack when the others stop trusting him (they really should have heard him out), yet I also understand their feelings. They counted on Jack to help guard the eggs, but because he went after the voice instead of returning like he said he would - ignoring Baby Tooth's warnings and putting everything else aside for his own curiousity - it lead to the eggs being smashed and the kids stopped believing in Bunny. Also, Baby Tooth got taken. It is kinda hurtful to them since Jack knows the importance of making sure the Holidays happens. - Now, in Jack's defense, it is understandable that he was drawn to getting the answers and I would probably do the same if I had no memories and suddenly was on the edge of getting my memories back, so I can't really blame him for his choice. However, it was irresponsible of him and I get that Bunny's words comes from a place of hurt after having begun to trust Jack as a comrade. (This is NOT meant to be bashing on Jack btw)

I loved this movie, glad you reacted to it 💯 also, I think some people are a little misinterpreted as to how some of the powers/life energy was working. The Guardians were guarding emotional energy in kids - innocent souls. Santa is wonder, Bunny is hope, Tooth is love, etc. This should give you an idea to why some people had more power than others, and how they fluctuated. Sandman was the most powerful Guardian because of what his power was channeled through: dreams. This can't be "not believed in". EVERYONE has to dream. It's your subconscious at work. So as long as people sleep, he always has a window. It's also why Pitch was so afraid of him and wanted him gone first, because he knew he couldn't "kill" him. So he did the next best thing - corrupted him. Which did 2 things: 1. Got home out of the way without erasing him 2. Used his power to do what he could not, channel his power worldwide simultaneously, allowing him to grow instantly. Sandman is sort of the lynchpin that helps them all, because he can channel their power to the children too, through their dreams. Which leads me to Pitch and Jack.... Pitch can never fully "die" because fear is not just an emotion, it's an instinct. You cannot get rid of fear, you can only overcome it. Which is what people were doing and why he was helpless for so long. But you just need a little doubt for him to grow.....until it gets overcome again LOL Jack had power even though he wasn't believed in because what HE gives was never in doubt. His power is joy. Fun. That, like fear or dreams, never goes away fully either. So even though the kids never knew it was him, they WERE getting joy through him, so his power was still very strong, even though his namesake wasn't believed in yet. Thats why he was weaker toward the end, when the last light was being protected. It was because Pitch, through his nightmares, was taking the joy from the kids. He wasn't stronger, Jack got weaker.

But Jack Frost is spirit of winter, unlike the other spirit of joy and wonder of kids wish and the festival, you could really conviced people that winter is fiction ? The Man In The Moon does have a backstory from an old fable used for this movie, I just don't remember what it's called. You might be able to find the name of the story if you search more about the making of the movie. Basically what I remember is: He's supposed to be one of the last Elemental forces still alive from the creation of the universe. Fear came into being somehow & fought with a bunch of them, causing a lot of chaos damage & destroying many Elementals & life they were protecting. They eventually defeated him but couldn't actually destroy him. So one of the last Elementals was set on the moon to guard our planet against Fear. Fear got a foothold on Earth though by turning Pitch Black from a human into an evil being. But Man In The Moon can't take a form on Earth for some reason, so he used his powers to make Guardians to actively keep fostering hope & happiness in children & fight off Pitch Black. So now that Pitch Black is waylaid (or even if he gets destroyed) by the Nightmares, Fear is still out there & will keep trying to destroy Earth so the Guardians will always be needed.

The reason Jack Frost didn’t lose his powers when the kids stopped believing was because he wasn’t a guardian yet. Pitch said in the scene in the Tooth Palace that “it’s great being a guardian but there’s a catch, if enough kids stop believing then everything they protect slowly goes away and little by little so do they”. That implies that once you become a guardian then you have to make sure you always have believers or else you’ll disappear. But Jack didn’t accept becoming a guardian until the end of the movie. Seeing as the lack of belief in the Tooth Fairy mainly affected her more than the rest of them that would imply if Jack had accepted guardianship right away he most likely would have disappeared immediately.

I think that when no one believed in Jack but he had his powers, it was because he was at zero and he had never been higher than that. But in the case of the others, they've been believed in for so long and when they weren't, they hit the rock bottom from 100 back to zero. Maybe when children believe in Jack Frost, he will get some bonus powers or something? And maybe the others, with some time given, would get some powers back, especially because their legend still goes on.
