In the Peloponnesian war Athens sent an expeditionary force to attack Syracuse ,even though Syracuse were completely occupied with Carthage, numbering 9000 men (I think) and were completely annihilated which shows the strength of Syracuse
@jhnshep6 жыл бұрын
Syracuse was a spartan ally and the expedition was planned to draw forces away from attica, Alcibiades that planned the expedition put it together for personal glory much like cesear or claudius and britain. the night before the EX,For left, statues were vandalised and weeks later an envoy landed near syracuse blaming Alciabiades and with a death sentence for him, he turned coat and went to the spartans telling the whole plan, the two men left in charge of the Ex.For wern't up for the task, the moored fleet was distroyed in an attack and the EXP.For was decimated by disease and such trying to besiege Syracuse. Time, lack of supplies and bad leadership done the expedition in, that's not to say the syacusans did nothing they spent their time sallying out and making the athenians lives a general misery. I suggest reading Plutarch lives IV, or thucydides if you're interested.

Syracuse defeated also carthage in 2 battles , battle at Himera in which Dionysos destroyed the carthaginian rule is Sicily for 100 years and the other one is battle at Crimissus a true miracle...check them out !!

I'm told that when the Athenians were planning to attack the city at night near some cliffs & the athenian allies, I can't recall who but they spoke a doric dialect and when marching to help the athenians they were marching with a war chant in doric dialect. The same dialect of the spartans and the Athenians supposedly thought that their allies were infact the spartans marching to attack them at night & thus the army panicked at the dead of night near some cliffs ( you can see where this is going) The Athenian army routed before realizing their mistake and many Athenians fell to their deaths.

When you say you have to take the stories with a pinch of salt, you REALY have to do just that. Because a lot of these "tyrants" weren't tyrants at all. They were just probbebly hard rulers. Because, for example. Pyrrhus of Epirus was called to the defence of syracuse (basicly all of scisally) against Carthege. But when he raised syracusans to bulster the numbers of his armies, he got called a tyrant. The same thing happened in the south of Italy. So what it seems like is that the population was fairly sensetive. Though some probbebly were true.
@DividedBYZer00006 жыл бұрын
The name Tyrant didn't have the same meaning as it does today as it did back then. Tyrant was a title used to refer to an authoritarian ruler. It wasn't a pejorative term.
@nathanaelsallhageriksson17196 жыл бұрын
Joey Bowers yeah, I thought it probbebly were something like that. However, when they use 'tyrant' to someone, they cirtainly did seem think of it as pejorative, at least in later years. Based on the stories that came with people called a tyrant. I am still in agreement with the fact that they didn't se the word tyrant in the same way as we do. The Italian greeks greeks seemed to do what in our time would be, compair any one leader they didn't like to Hitler. (And call him a tyrant) :-)
@jhnshep6 жыл бұрын
Tyrant came to power through force, the athenians didn't like the idea, being democratic and also more used to hereditary kingdoms. Tyrants for the most part ruled fairly though their seat was as insecure as the guy they took it from. The tax system still used today (sorta) was thought up by a tyrant of syracuse and the archimedes principle concerning water displacement came about because the two friends, tyrant and mathematician felt the ruler was being cheated by a sculpter. anyhoo language is a funny thing, cynic comes from dog in greek, cynical today is something else :-D

Dionysus’ strategy to take over Syracuse is similar to an ancient Athenian’s strategy to take over. I think he was called Peisistratos. When got kicked out, he got a random villager, dressed her up as Athens (Patron goddess of Athens) and rode on a chariot into Athens where she proclaimed him king. While this worked he was once more kicked out, and only later managed to reinstall himself as a tyrant.

The metal bull was a gift to him by an inventor and because he felt insulted by the gift he use it on him Tyrant in ancient Greece was not a bad thing it is just an other name for a city's ruler , it was used negatively only by the Athenians to show the superiority of the democracy

Perilles built the so-called Brazen Bull you are talking about for the ruler Feleris. When the bull was finished, Feleris ordered his men to put Peleris who built it inside to ensure that it would work as intential. The tyrant to whom you refer is Phalaris, who was originally a sculptor/builder, who made himself despot of the city of Agrigentum. He put the inventor Perillos of Athens into the bull and roasted him alive. The despot is also alleged to have eaten newborn babies.

Pedro Santos I've never understood why CA doesn't try to get into consoles. There is a market for it despite what people may think, plus the current gen can definitely handle older games and the newer ones too perhaps with small unit scale and lowered graphics. But most definitely the PS4 Pro and Xbox one X should handle Rome 2 and Thrones of Britannia with not much problems. Also you can use mouse and keyboard for both

@GungEdits6 жыл бұрын
Yes.
@TimDutch6 жыл бұрын
Jon Pierce why?
@DB43316 жыл бұрын
The reason I enjoy Rome 2 more than Atiila is the time period. Rome, Carthage, Egypt, Sparta, Arveni, Selecuid, Athens, Macedon etc. I could go on but those are such classic amazing factions! The factions in Attila just aren't quite to the same level....in my opion at least.
@GungEdits6 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but game wise it ran better than Attila, better end turns, better AI, and better graphics utilization.
@DB43316 жыл бұрын
Ya. I like that they added seige level and flammable assets but I feel like that stuff might have bogged down the engine. Rome 2 vanilla is looking very good. I'm sure when the ancestral update is offical and all the graphics mods are compatible that Rome 2 will look amazing!!!

O, now that's what i like, Syrakus. Short question before: Can you change your government with Syracuse? I want to get rid of that dictatorship, the people of Syracuse shall lead the politics.
@reyne28786 жыл бұрын
Steinmodus Tyrants in ancient Greece did not have the meaning of tyrants of today
@steinmodus89436 жыл бұрын
Alexis Goncalves That's not directly true. Tyrants often times legitimized their reign through violance. That's why it's called Tyrannis. The older term of Tyrannis was not judgmental, that is correct. It was however a reign achieved through coups which were brutal more often than not. Though there were cases where those coups were legitimized by people's Assembly (but guided by oppression most of the times). Later on after the disposal of the Athenian Tyrannis, a strong rejection of tyranny has been accompanied, reinforced by philosophical concept from Platon for example (as mentioned in Politeia). Concluding, already in ancient greek times tyranny mostly was a brutal and unlimited dictatorship. Regarding the DLC, Syracuse will no longer suffer under Dionysios!
