I think he's got more and more casual over the years. Sometimes he complains about an indie game that he abandoned for "overusing" a mechanic for 6 hours but he played DCUO for 1000 hours.

This isn’t a slight on kinda funny I just think it’s an interesting topic, when we hear about these 6-7 year long developer cycles everyone preaches about shorter games with less detailed graphics at a better cadence. I get the impression rise of the ronin is along them lines but then we’re talking (not just KF) about longer timelines to flesh things out more. So do we want shorter games with poorer graphics with an emphasis on fun and gameplay or do we actually just want both ? I’m with KF that when it’s promoted as a first party PS game you expect this level of polish and presentation, just thought it’s an interesting topic. Again need to be clear this is not just KF I’m just here because I enjoy PSILY , be civil

It also has to do with the fact that publishers have been spoiling us with highly polished graphics. With recent games being bigger and better-looking, it unintentionally ups the expectations of the public. If publishers like Sony are really going to scale back on costs, then there's going to be a bit of growing pain when it comes to graphics and game length. I imagine gamers are either going to learn to appreciate gameplay over graphics and side content, or they're going to complain about how "devs are cutting corners"

It’s incredible to get a game with the scope of FF7 rebirth but then unfortunately it sets a precedent for games going forward to deliver that level of polish and content for the same price tag or be ridiculed. I think really there’s a place for both but unfortunately I don’t think the “smaller” games will be treated as such and always be compared to the juggernauts

While I personally do like the whole “shorter games with worse graphics” thing, I don’t think it’s necessarily an *unfair* comparison to make. Sony is still asking for $70 for this game, same as they do for Tsushima or Horizon or whatever other game you pick. I don’t think it’s necessarily unfair as a consumer to demand the most out of the product you put down money for. Really I think some of this criticism could have been sidestepped by dropping the price on this game. You don’t see that same kind of criticism for Hi Fi Rush or Helldivers (both of which I think look great!) because they’re not asking for $70. Ghostrunner II or Humanity are other examples from last year too where the price sets some expectations. But Sony is publishing Ronin as a $70 first party game, so I don’t think it’s unfair to put $70 first party game expectations on it.

Love how at 48:34 Greg hits Andy with the, I thought we wanted lower budget games with lower margins so people could keep their jobs and potentially get paid more, and you're over here complaining about how it's not graphically intense with a large population density. Then how earlier they were discussing how Team Ninja can pump out 8/10 in 2-3 years, but Andy was like well maybe 5 years for a truly great and more expensive game is needed...but haven't we been talking about how this generation has been lack luster due to how long game development is? Andy does make good points, but it's kinda like he wants every game to be either a 1st Party Sony game or a Souls games.

I'm like Greg, this game is practically for me. As a fan of nioh 1&2, with the stance switching, I should feel right at home. To top it off, I love all things samurai. As far as story goes, this is team ninja, koei tecmo. Ninja gaiden, dynasty warriors. They never been great with story so I dont expect much in that department. I understand the comparisons, but musou compared to ghost... ouch. Graphics, definitely agree. It dont look bad, but in some aspects I recall nioh (at least nioh 2) looking better than ronin. This shouldn't be a ps5 exclusive, for sure, and for $70, hopefully there's more to do in it. I'm still going to get it cause I'm a team ninja loyalist. 😅 And then double kudos for reminding me rurouni kenshin. Great discussion

Not sure about that. Looking at impressions from elsewhere the main issue with the game seems to be that people don’t like the combat, and being a Team Ninja game combat was the main thing it had going for it, so that kinda sucks.

What happened to somebody being the lead reviewer at KF on a major game and actually finishing the game? Both Rise of the Ronin and Dragon's Dogma videos barely had anybody at KF play them

This is a pretty specific case of it happening with 2 major releases. They got codes for RoR last Monday I think and DD2 last Wednesday. Greg was at a premiere in NY on thursday. They have been dealing with GDC events in San Fran as well as hosting them at their studio since last week. They had 14 dev teams in there on Monday to work with. Blessing and Mike are hosting panels at PAX this weekend. They just have been busy during work hours and they aren't required to play these on their time off especially if it doesn't click with them. Reviews so far/in progress and first impressions are still useful especially if you look at reviews from any other website.

Gregs very different perspective on this is exactly what I expected. During a Games Daily livestream I got shit from Blessing for saying that based on what he and Andy traditionally like in video games them not digging Ronins beginning hours made me think I would probably like this in the same way Greg is. I meant no offense by that assessment but it felt like I touched a nerve. As I have become a fan of KF Ive found I tend to dig games in the same way as Greg. Again I could walk away from this game and hate it but based on the wildly different review opinions I have seen for this game it feels like most will either love or hate Rise of the Ronin? If you want that "Shogun" feel, play Like a Dragon: Ishin! Its on Gamepass and is in the exact same timeframe as this game with many of the same characters and the same exact over arching story. Its a Yakuza game, so you can count on the main story being fantastic.

I’ve been highly trepidatious about Ronin because I absolutely CANNOT get into souls games and I specifically hated my time with Team Ninjas previous games like Nioh 1 & 2. Hearing people talk about this and seeing the “blasphemous” inclusion of a difficulty option makes me think this might work for me? As a basic bitch “newbie” to gaming this feels like it’s more my speed? Though I do not think this will get anywhere close to the masterpiece that is Ghost of Tsushima for me. Ghost is on my shortlist of favorite/best games of all time.

For example not usually with Greg on open world games, usually agree with Andy on most things, and I’m usually a number below Tim on most things. The cons for DD2 from Blessing are enough for me to know it’s not going to be for me.

Greg likes this game and not DD2 because he enjoys games that tell him where to go and what to do... handheld with quest markers, fast travel, tick list, ala assassins creed. The stereotypical games that are produced by the dozen. Though I guess each to their own. I will be playing this in few months but just a liitle exhausted from playing these formulaic types of games. The review for DD2 yesterday has to be one of worst i have every come across, it was pointless. Even IGN did a better a job of reviewing DD2 and that is saying someting. They actually completed the game.

someone’s opinion is valid no matter how much time they put into it just depends on what wording they use, they stated all week that it’s not possible for them to beat both games by review date due to their two showcases. the dragons dogma impressions is whatever they don’t even number it and they’re just stating their initial thoughts while here it states review so far meaning their going to finish the game but this is a 20 hour check in.

My issue with the Dragons Dogma impressions wasn’t so much the fact that they hardly played the game, it was that they had a complete lack of knowledge of what game they were attempting to play. This review kind of has the same issue, they seem to think this game is doing new stuff combat wise, when it’s actually just a dumbed down version of Nioh.
