Our animated historical documentary on the history of the Mongols continues with a video on the rise of Timur, who some consider the only Mongol leader comparable to Chinggis khan. This chapter will focus on his taking over the power in Central Asia and Iran, and the war against the Khan of the Golden Horde Toqtamish with descriptions of the battles of Terek and Kondurcha River. Timur will be back for more...

I'm surprised at how competent a commander Toqtamish was. I'd always assumed that, due to how devastating Timur's victory over him was, he must've been only mediocre. But all his battles with Timur were very well fought, and it could've gone either way - it seems like Toqtamish would've been the great power of the time had Timur not risen to power (say, had he died from his wounds when young).

7:53 After converting to islam , Bagrat convinced Timur to give him an army to convert the rest of Georgia, but actually warned his sons about the coming army, which he led into a trap and slaughtered. Saying that Timur was angered is an understatement, as he attacked Georgia a further seven times between 1387-1403, causing irreperable damage and contributing to the kingdom's final demise.

It was so unnecessary i even heard many georgian historical cities and towns were torched and destroyed lands sowed with salt, thousands upon thousands slaughtered they should have just bent the knee to be honest... wasnt worth that mess they should have braved the Timur storm which would have collapsed after his death and similar to uzbeks, georgians could have pushed out and retaken lost cities even expanding further azerbaijan region as timurids were in freefall after the death of shah rukh and they would have done all this with there state still in tact and healthy

@@Eabokor1 Unnecessary mass murder in Georgia? That was Timur's MO when dealing with anyone after a time. He sacked Baghdad, killing everyone but artisans, which he sent back. He went on a killing spree in Damascus, citing things a thousand years before during Umayyad dynasty, and the killing of Mohamed's sons, etc - as the reason for his 1000 year late massacre.... Needless? Yeah, that covers it. It wasn't even about conversions really; he once hit an Islamic town, and ordered every soldier to collect 200 human heads and return. They ran out of men to kill... So they killed all the campaign's prisoners. And that still wasn't enough, so they killed some of their own women... Yeah, a psychopath doesn't begin to describe it. But yeah, after the betrayal going on in Georgia; he felt like doing much more of the same up there too. He was just not the type of person you wanted to get on the bad side with, especially if you weren't far enough away with some sort of super army. Similar to Genghis in that way.

However, eventually cannons and drilling became much more important. No none Western power would ever field large quantities of drilled armies that march in formation, that would be the antithesis of noble warfare. They also didn't have the technology and expertise to produce high quality cannons. "The core of Timur's armies during his career were the Chagatai Khanite. Skilled horse archers and cavalry, supplemented by subject peoples. Overtime he replaced tribal leaders with family and followers. Keeping his army constantly on campaign made it difficult for his generals to develop alternative power bases or conspire against him. The key to Timurid military success was Timur himself. Not just a phenomenal tactician, Timur thoroughly prepared for each campaign and gather all possible intelligence on the weakness of his enemies. He led every campaign, rarely delegating power, keeping his troops loyal through rich plunder and the provinces loyal through fear" Sounds like what really made Timur so success was going old school Mongolian. Using the very same strategies, military organization and leadership that made the great Genghis so successful in the first place. If the Mongols ever had a second coming of Genghis Khan, Tamerlane came the closest to being worthy of the great Khan's mantle.

No Genghis Khan never even used that good tactics against anyone and he overpowered everyone with army and Cavalry. Timur on the other hand was legit asshole cuz he was Mongol but a man of culture and tech too....he used very ingenious techniques to destroy cities. unlike his predecessor Timir actively raped well defended cities and one time he burnt the supporting structure of walls to crumble them and then next time he had Persian built 100's of catapults for him and take the city old fashioned way. He was best of both worlds and he even defeated ottoman army with Guns and cannons.....why? He actively used them in battlefield....his ability to adapt and being man of both worlds along with his intelligence was his super power. If Kings and General made serious out of this.......you will see why people feared him.

I would very much like a video on how the Mongols and their descendants were able to control such vast territories, how they managed to find the manpower for their conquests as their power bases were in historically thinly populated areas and how they managed to campaign from China all the way to Europe and India. It must have been a real challenge to supply a large army on such journeys. Also this just goes to show that the Timurids need even better missions in EU4 and they really should start as a horde again.
