I'm glad you noticed the shot of Scott appreciating Mitch's singing. He is a huge fan of Mitch's voice (as are the other PTX members) and if Scott isn't singing and Mitch is, you'll often see him reacting with that smile.

The original video credits Scott and Pentatonix's "sixth member" Ben Bram with this arrangement, and Ben is playing the piano. If you haven't heard about Ben Bram before, he is an a capella singer / arranger / producer who Scott met through his college a capella group. Ben helped Pentatonix get on the SingOff, managed some of their early tours, and has done final arrangements and produced most of their songs.

Any time I'm upset I pull up the Superfruit video's and let Scott and Mitch's beautiful harmonies and melodies calm me down. Their Troye Sivan cover is a study in shocking context and I play it on loop, just letting their voices wash over me. So here now with "Rise" add in 3 more stunning voices, is it wrong for me to perhaps naively believe and wonder that the power of music can bring the most hardened person to their knees, weapons tossed aside. Thank you Christopher and Sir. 🪶

Whenever the Pulse massacre comes up, I like to make sure we remember Christina Grimmie who was shot a day before in Orlando. No connection between the events but Christina was so young, kind and full of life. I had been following her for awhile on KZbin. She had a promising career as well. She got 3rd or 4th on The Voice the year before she died, I think. Adam Levine was her mentor on the show and he got very close with her family during the show. He ended up paying for her funeral. RIP.

You mentioned Scott and Mitch singing a straight line and then moving it into vibrato. They’ve been singing together so long they usually match their vibratos. It’s obviously more noticeable during superfruit when it’s just the two of them. Superfruit is another. Huge rabbit hole to go down. They started as comedy vloggers/you tubers but noticed that their musical episodes did better than just the vlogs. They have some great evolutions/medleys from when they were still vloggers but then they got more professional and put out a full original album that they wrote called Future Friends. Unfortunately they stopped doing superfruit when they moved into separate houses but we all keep hoping they’ll do more music someday as their superfruit album and videos were all so good. Glad to see you doing this one first.

This is and has been for the last 8 years been my favorite performance of all time. I know part of it is the connection to the Pulse shooting as it lends another depth to the message. I listen to it frequently, never just once anytime, and virtually never without choking up. The blend, the dissonance, the build and denouement, and Mary's tender final notes all just trigger so many emotions of grief, courage, sadness, and Joy all at the same time. Thank you for reacting to this.

I've used up all my superlatives in previous comments. I can't find a way to say how much I love this song, arrangement, and performance. I'll have to settle for something ludicrously trivial: Sir Hairless, when you get to BJC's "Creep" (live performance on America's Got Talent, please), you might notice that Brian is wearing the same textured black leather jacket that you see on him here. I seldom pay attention to what singers wear, but that jacket is a standout. ETA: Mary was the perfect choice for the final a cappella solo. Her voice is powerful but also gentle. Even the K sounds on "conscious" and "chaos" are somehow softened when she produces them.
@janices53892 ай бұрын
@SirHairless I will add, PLEASE when you do the BJC AGT version of Creep, be aware that he sang it 2x. It is the 1st audition video that you really want to watch. The second one in the semi-finals is good but there is something truly magical about the first performance. Something indefinable that sets it heads and shoulders above most versions I've ever heard, despite being a shortened version of the song (due to constraints of the contest) You will see exactly what I mean at the very end of the performance, but I don't want to give it away. Listen close, because it's a tribute that is very rarely seen.
@janeramirez87672 ай бұрын
@@janices5389 Totally agree. That's the video I meant. Thanks for the clarification.

Mary Lambert's most famous work is probably being the featured artist to sing the hook in "Same Love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, which she expanded into the solo song "She Keeps Me Warm", released in 2014.
@ruth21412 ай бұрын
If you are a certain age, you may have heard Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's 2012 hit, "Same Love", which was a huge hit and unavoidable for a few months, at least in the US. Mary Lambert co-wrote and sang the refrain ("She keeps me warm...").

Hello, Sir!! Thank you so much for your reaction/analysis of this amazing cover. And thank you for mentioning the inspiration of the singers involved. I think I've listened to this a couple of dozen times and i still get goosebumps every time. I can, however, listen without tearing up now. Edited to add.....when you mention matching flat tones vs. use of vibrato, one thing that I've always marveled at is how Pentatonix (especially Mitch and Kirstie) can match their vibrato. The same pitch, frequency, and speed that makes their voices blend even more seamlessly. Fun fact about Brian Justin Crum. In 2021 during the height of Covid, he released an album called DIVA in which he covers, you guessed it, some of our favorite divas! His cover of Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" is mind blowing! I hope to hear him soon on your channel! Thank you again from Wyoming......if it were to exist that is.....

This is my first time hearing this song originally sung by Katy Perry. Therefore, putting the lyrics up on the screen was very helpful for me, I paused the video and took my time reading both pages, thank you! It was such a powerful song and I agree with you all the voices were well chosen for the emotional impact the arrangement and lyrics were meant to convey. The dissonance absolutely commands the attention of the listener and other subtle nuances you point out are a tribute to both the arrangement and attention to detail and emotional expression that all the performers utilized. I found this a brilliant and heartfelt performance which captured me to the end, thank you again for sharing your astute musical ear and concise analytical breakdown of this group’s interpretation of this song.

I love this. I would say Mario's is my least favorite voice (Not because I don't like it but because all of these are sooooo gooood). So it would be: 1. Mitch 2. Justin 3. Scott 4. Mary 5. Mario That said, they all have distinctive colors, I always liked this tribute, it's powerful, sounds like a statement and that is what I like the most. I love your knowledge as always. The part I enjoyed the most is when you mention Scott (and later Mario) singing alone and then being accompanied by the rest going down. I always noticed that after Scott they all go together... But JUST the first note. I never realized that they keep going later. Maybe I was focused on Scott IDK cause when you mention this on the video my attention went there and I clearly hear it. Why don't I naturally hear these things unless pointed out to me? Is it normal? Obviously the feeling hits me so I guess a part of me gets whatever they are trying to make me feel but I am not conscious of it. I know it may be that people who are close to music their entire lives have a better ear, and more when they are purposely searching for these to put on a video, but I believe I have a fear closeness to music, I don't read music and I don't play an instrument but I sang for three different bands when I was younger, two as main vocal and 1 as accompanying vocals for the main vocalist. My best friend also sings and actually has a voice teacher and I still don't catch some of these things drives me cray, cray. Anyways I extended this comment more than it needed. Hugs from Argentina as always! Lupe.-
