The joke about the removal of magic reminds me of the Shadow Broker DLC in Mass Effect 2. While holding down a position to protect a door hacking device, Shepard comments "Remember when you could just slap Omni-gel on everything?" Liara responded "A lot of people were upset about that security upgrade." I just got a chuckle out of that.

It's kind of hard to articulate, but part of me wishes that they pivoted and did more games like this. Like, this game has one of the best art directions of Piranha games, and with little more open world it could become something magical.

I remember picking up this game when I was in highschool without any expectations, and it was a really nice surprise. It filled the void that Skyrim left in me after doing almost everything that was available. Although Risen has a lot of issues, I think is an very fun rpg.

It's a shame how as time goes on, older games become harder to run, feels like this game could really benefit from a remaster, if not a downright remake, cuz honestly? We don't have enough pirate themed games out there! Great 100% review as usual!

Hi Mortym! Happy Easter to all those who celebrate! I personally found Risen 2 pretty fun. Like I said in your first impressions vid of this game, if PB had tightened up the combat a bit, it would have been even better. Also, I like the art and graphics, and the idea of voodoo as magic was pretty unique.

I haven't played Risen 1, but played all other Pyrhana Bytes games. And Risen 2 is right below Gothic 2 for me, so almost a favorite of the bunch. Sad to see you mention the forgettableness of the companion characters, as I actually liked most of them. Patty, Bones, the "second" Steelbeard and the auri culci guy in particular :) That made the final scene super impactful and emotional, especially when Jaffar gets the hat

You are a god among men. To not only beat, but 100% a game in less than a week is crazy. Still, keep up the good work! My biggest issue with this game is that every time you save, it generates a new file, taking up hard drive space, so if you don't overwrite older states or delete them, you'll have them taking up more gigabytes than the core game itself.

I played this game at release and it was a huge departure from Risen 1 for me. I enjoyed parts of Risen 2 and the whole "pirate theme" did worn out it's welcome towards the end, but I did have a good time with it. I still wanted Piranha Bytes to go back to Risen 1/Gothic style of games instead, because those are the ones I enjoyed the most but with Elex 1-2 and Risen 2-3 I don't know if that's going to happen.

Haven't watched the review yet but I remember from my time 100%-ing the game that achievements would reset after restarting the game and that being a huge pain in the buttocks. I was literally grinding out that one achievement where you have to kill a thousand (or more?) monsters and the game crashed right before I was there, I was never so mad at trying to 100% a video game. Can't wait to watch your review with that in mind. EDIT: Fun fact. The DLCs in Risen 2 were in the main game and owning the actual DLC only activated them. I owned all DLCs thanks to the collectors edition, but the people who only bought the main game back in the day quickly found out that by using the ingame cheating menu you could just unlock the DLCs with cheats. Probably also the reason why cheat consoles were missing in subsequent Piranha Bytes games lol

I am a huge fan of piranha bytes games. Gothic 2 was my first RPG and I fell in love with it immediately. I adore Risen 1 and got Risen 2 on release but somehow I couldn't get into it at the time. I only played 2 hours or so and it was only years later that I played through the game and liked it quite a bit, I would still say it's my least favourite of the Risen titles. Looking forward to hear your opinion on Risen 3. To me it feels like a mix between Risen 1 and Risen 2 and though it is fairly easy I still like it quite a bit.

This one and R3 blend into my mind I forgot which was which until your review(you will see when you play 3 or like I called it 2.5). I don't remember lots of crashing but it was either this one or maybe R3 where when I got it the day it came out on steam back in the day it would not run on my brand new computer. I had to go into my bios and turn off half my cores to get it to run and this was day one of its release. Which is funny because on both Risen 1 and Gothic 3 my computer had a hard time running and it was a bit choppy and hella buggy\crashy. The things I put up with in PB games because I love them is kind of ridiculous(I could probably list a whole page of them).

Hey Mortium! While I hate to tell you what to do with your channel I do have a few suggestions for some games you might like to check out that I have been playing recently that might feel your speed. Serpent in the Staglands is a very flawed CRPG that I put up with because I liked the atomosphere and ended up really enjoying Everspace 2 - arcadey space sim meets RPG. not a roguelike like the first game. Chronicon - The BEST diablo style ARPG that isnt grim dawn. it feels great to do 500k damage per attack at later levels and watch the screen become a EDM light show concert lol -------- now were gonna get into some early access titles that I usually wouldnt ask you to potentially cover BUT IMO these are really worth keeping an eye on or even playing now. Death Trash - Weird action rpg/Crpg hybrid that feels truly fresh. Dread Delusion - open world first person rpg. Some people say it has morrowind vibes but IMO its even weirder. ********The Doors of Trithius********* Lastly is a game I truly want to gush over and profess my love for. its a bit different since its a traditional roguelike similar to ToME - BUT it has a save system, open world, quest, multiple build options, crafting, housing, combat and non combat skills, and great loot. It is called The Doors of Trithius. Mortium, I truly believe this game is something special and will go down as a classic in the coming years. It gets regular updates and is probably the only early access game I tell people is worth playing mid developemnt. Usualy i check out early access games once and put em down until the final release. Not The Doors of Trithius. I come back to this game CONSTANTLY because of all the build options and updates.

As you said Risen 2 is a really good game, but very disappointed sequel. I finished all Risen games few weeks ago and I didn't have almost any technical issues with them. Only few crashes. I played Steam version with graphics mods. In general Risen 2 is probably my favourite one. I love the atmosphere, art direction, even melee combat system I enjoyed a lot.
@val1n
@val1n Жыл бұрын
The crashes you reported are interesting. I played the entire Risen series six months ago, and I had no crash whatsoever. Maybe those crashes you encountered are related to the resolution you played on. I did notice in the video there are some cut off value in the character screen. But perhaps it somehow shows different when playing with high resolution. But nonetheless, this is not an excuse for Piranha Bytes if they give the player the option to use those resolutions. I really enjoyed the game, but I have to say, I'm not the biggest fan of all this pirate related stuff. So, it was never such a big deal for me. Just a fun game to play, and definitely not one of my favourite games.

Risen 2 is a tough one. I adore pirates and anything pirate themed will have me willing to give it a shot at the least. But as you point out its a bad sequel. This would have been a fine standalone game, but as a sequel to Risen its like........why build all that stuff up only to knock it down with the next one? At least with Gothic they iterated on what came before and they felt like genuine progressions. Risen 2 feels more like a spin off set in the same world than a direct sequel. I still like it but it just........feels like a wasted opportunity to build on the foundations they had already established.

I think Risen 2's combat was a big step backwards. Risen 1 had imo perfect timings. They weren't too fast. After a couple hours you got a hang of it. It felt more like a first person game to me while in Risen 2 every movement felt clunky and disconnected. I mean it was basically just button mashing. Left click left click left click until the enemy is dead. You could never do that in R1. Dodging/parrying and timing was mandatory.

@@czapla1024 it's not only about the drinking. It just feels clunky and I don't really know how to express it. Maybe hazy? R1 wolfs, rats or humans have short but clear time windows when I know I need to dodge or parry. In R2 the time window is longer, the animations take longer and you can't react as fast. You can't stop movements. I also prefer step dodges over long dodge rolls.

@@Demetrius900000 No I just set the game to 4k in the settings, most games can scale to whatever your resolution is even older ones. Doesn't always look amazing depending on how the game was made. For instance here you can see the text cutting off in various places.

You should like Risen 3 more as some of the issues present here have been addressed. Some. Still, I found it had a deeper story and was a more involving game than this one.

It's fine but I don't dig the setting as much as in R1, and the game is not as well-defined and fleshed out as Risen 3. R3- great game!

I'm sorry but I'm beginning to question if these are really 100% reviews. Risen 2 is documented as a 50 hour game and you had a first impression video 3 days ago. Even if you were around 20 hours in at that time, that would still be 10 hours a day plus whatever time to put together a video. Just doesn't seem possible. Are you having other people continue your progression when you sleep or something and then give you notes?

First impression does not mean he started playing it three days ago. Just to make the first impression video you would need a day of editing.

I started playing on Tuesday, impressions went up on Thursday. When something publishes and when I did it aren't always right in line with one another. Timing and embargoes have to be taken into account, for instance I've already made the video for this coming Wednesday. While not always the case, me being several days ahead of what you're seeing isn't publish isn't uncommon. This is why my steam profile is public so you can look for yourself.

Hey! Risen 2 is a bad sequel? I dissagree. Risen 2 is a great sequel to Gothic 2, the self-citing, that make people theory-craft about Risen being veiled-sequel of Gothic series, is a huge thing, that make this game and this theme work. Also, theme is fixed in the sequel, making Risen a good trilogy, like the Gothic was. God knows I hate pirates and everything related to them, and I love monastery from Risen 1, but this game made melee great, and is so related to Gothic 2, that i can't hate theme changing. Risen 2 is a good sequel if you count Gothic series (not as a direct sequel but as veiled sequel with self-citing)
