Small note: Garmin says Safe Glide is to be used only for engine out situations, not for pilot incapacitation situations. I think there are clear differences that would make using Safe Glide inadvisable when the engine is operating.
@WheelsInTheSky10 ай бұрын
@ranetorrent8988. Thanks, that’s interesting. As one guy said, it may be cheaper to just teach your wife to land!!
@ranetorrent898810 ай бұрын
@@WheelsInTheSky Hm, I’m not sure it’s practical to expect every right seat passenger to be capable of landing the plane. The chute is a great option when all other options are spent. But using Safe Glide for pilot incapacitation situations could create bigger problems. Safe Glide wants to pitch to best glide, and doing that at a high power setting would be incorrect. And, pulling power when you have a good engine might eliminate the best landing options. In that aircraft, I think I’d do a preflight briefing with passengers showing them the LVL and HDG buttons on the GMC-507 auto pilot, and show them how to navigate to the nearest airport where they can pull the chute. I’d save the Smart Glide button specifically for engine-out situations as a method to reduce workload in an emergency situation. I’m considering purchasing a Risen 915is SV, so that has me thinking through as many elements of this aircraft and its operation as I can. The Smart Glide for pilot incapacitation comment gave me pause to think through that scenario. So, I contacted Garmin and they gave a short, curt reply stating that Smart Glide is ONLY for engine out scenarios. By the way, the filming you do on this video is extraordinary. Keep up the great work!

How does this compare to the DarkAero? (I mean, besides the DarkAero not shipping for at least another year.) * That cockpit looks quite roomy. I assume the bucket of the seats is between the two wing spars? * Wing is significantly bigger than DarkAero, and the max weight is less, and those huge flaps! DarkAero's stall speed and runway requirements would be larger, right? * Is the DarkAero effectively much faster? The DarkAero fuel capacity is over 4x larger, but max gross weight isn't a lot bigger. Is the Risen just assuming you'll always have a passenger? Are those flaps making the tanks smaller?
@WheelsInTheSky Жыл бұрын

Although, I’m not sure I would be comparing the Dark Arrow to much at this point. History is full of aircraft designers who haven’t gotten past the point where Dark Arrow is right now. But, I hope they do and I hope their specs materialize! I know, not much help am I.

Beautiful airplane. One question - Is there enough luggage space for a long weekend trip for my wife and I ??????????? Can you get it without the parachute? (with such a low stall speed, looks like you could crash land in a small field without much bodily damage). Landing gear wheels look a little small...
@WheelsInTheSky Жыл бұрын
@keitha.9788. Yes. Bob and his wife do it all the time, with their dog. Although, they stay at friends or hotel. I would say the volume/size of the baggage area is certainly adequate for week-end trips. The weight limit is 30kg/66 pounds. If your going to be camping, it may be a bit tight depending on your camping equipment. Yes, you can get the plane with out the ballistic chute. I would agree, slow enough speed to put down about anywhere. Unless you routinely fly over territory that wouldn’t allow any kind of emergency landing. Yes, those are little wheels. I had mentioned that to Alberto, in reference to landing off asphalt. As I recall he mentioned you could put bigger tires on it. Not sure how much bigger would still fit in the wheel well?? My buddy and I fly our high-wings backcountry. I land first with my big tires to check the strip, then he lands his Bird Dog, with 6.00” tires. So much fun!

@WheelsInTheSky Жыл бұрын
@rigilchrist. Sorry, we should’ve explained better. Apparently, there are other inputs that help determine propeller pitch besides just throttle position. I have to say, after flying jets my whole life, I kinda like the idea of the plane figuring out the optimal mixture and prop pitch.

Is the experimental version rated for higher gross weight than the LSA version? Wondering if actual GW and CG is much higher for the airframe than the rated. Is the ballistic parachute due to poor spin recovery characteristics or can it be ordered without one?
@WheelsInTheSkyАй бұрын
@marcdragon2659. I sent your question over to Bob (that was his risen that I did the video on). Here’s his reply. The GW on mine is 1377 lb, the microlight production version in Europe weighs in at 1650. When Alberto and Reed flew his 916 non-stop from Goose Bay to Ireland, the aircraft was about 450 lb over gross weight, so there is a pretty large margin structurally. The airplane has strakes at the ruddervator fuselage point that makes it spin resistant, I got into a power on stall demonstration for my BFR a few weeks ago, and the stall occurred at about 54 knots, plenty of warning, but broke hard to the left because of the torque, nose fell through around 60-70 degrees below the horizon, I pulled power, neutralized the ailerons, stopped rotation in about half a turn with rudder. Everyone who has bought this aircraft wants the BRS as a last ditch fail safe.

I’d love to see the fixed-gear version (the Siren) equipped with the 915. I’m willing to bet you’d give up no more than around 10-12 kts in airspeed, especially at high altitudes with reduced drag. I read an article that the Siren (912) boasts a record of 155 kt/288 kph cruise. Yet the Risen 912 is advertised at 300 kph, which is 161.9 kts. That’s very little difference. I’m a fan of fixed-gear due to the high maintenance costs and insurance premiums associated with retracts.

@stingsportflyersusa2561 Thank you, it was a good time videoing Bob’s Risen. I’m not sure how far he’d fly it to show someone, but if you’re ever in the Salt Lake area, I can put you in touch with him. As a Risen rep., a lot of people go thru him to buy their Risen and take a test flight.
@stingsportflyersusa2561 Жыл бұрын
Perfect I did not know he was a rep because I was wondering if it’s considered an EAB and if so, did he have to go to Italy to participate in the build? Thanks so much for the quick reply. PS your guys planes were pretty cool too obviously and they’re also aerobatic which the Risen is not.

Great job on your videos. The Risen is an awesome airplane for the Speed vs fuel economy and landing distance. Would love to see what the 916 will yield out of her. Would love to go flying with you sometime with my Patey built 720 Legacy🤙 I’m out of Spanish Fork. Cheers.

@KyleMoses. Thanks Kyle. I’m thinking the same, eager to see the performance of the 916. That would be great, love to see your legacy. I’m down that way fairly often. They’ll be a small group of us doing a parade flyover this 24th, then we land there and they give us gas. Lol. “Will work for gas”. @WheelsInTheSky Жыл бұрын
@ibnewton8951. Bobs doesn’t , as it is one of the earliest models. Going to have to use a crash axe, should be pretty easy. But, per European reg’s the new ones have to have a way access cockpit from outside.

@noonehere1793. Lol. Nothing right at the ends. A couple miles off the North end there’s some big power lines, but there’s also a lot of open fields for an emergency landing- as long as you miss the power lines. Nothing but building off the south end!

I learned to fly at BTF skypark! wow... you should make a video about the airfield and what's become of it. Looks like a lot more hangars were added since 2002. Also, when he was describing the plane all i could hear is 'expensive' 'expensive' and more 'expensive stuff'. Like, the oxygen system connected to an ipad, connedted to him to see how he's breathing, or the autoland stuff. It's almost a type rating, all the things in it. Most men his age cannot perform the physical maneuver he did to get into it, much less their wives. Why not get a bonanza or a cirrus? Way more capable and user friendly.
@WheelsInTheSky Жыл бұрын
@scottboelke4391. Hi Scott, SkyPark is a neat little airport. I never noticed it till I retired from the airline and was desperate to get my own plane! That’s what I thought when I saw Bob’s plane - dollar signs! But he likes that stuff. I do to, but I’m not sure I’m willing to pay for it, after all, I may never fly another instrument approach the rest of my life. Not sure I would want to in a single engine anyway. I have the G3x, in my Rocket though, bought it that way. Gotta say, I love it. Makes life easy. Every time I climb in my Husky, I remember the reason the seller was getting rid of it. He said it was too hard getting in and out! Another good reason to keep the gym membership !! Bonanza or Cirrus? Always thought it was interesting how everyone buys a different plane. But, all good points, I’m glad you checked in!
