@berniebrown9115. That southern Utah is amazing. There’s a few strips like that- drop offs on both sides and a cliff on each end. With that camera out there on the wing tip, it makes it look like you’re about off the runway. We use to fly down there in our rockets to explore. Got so excited over all the cool airstrips, I got me a backcountry plane. Hopefully March and April will be good months to head back down there. Then, starting in May head back to Idaho! Can’t wait!

The Bob Ross of flying..... bwaaaaaaahhhh However - the gent knows how to take off - no silly pushing - leave the elevator alone and let it naturally rise. Shorter take off and protects the prop. Superb video and what an awesome sound.

@Trent772. Hey Trent, yeah, I’ve heard that before. I’m going to have to work on narration. You’re right on the take offs. When I first got the 185, I tried to fly it like my Rocket. That was awkward. My friend Steve told me the right way. Such a pleasure to just let her lift off when she’s ready!

Perhaps you know what you are doing..... apart from having fun flying your great aircraft. You are bringing to people around the world, like me in Tasmania, the sights and experiences of your ruggedly beautiful part of the world that most of the near 8 Billion of us out here can not get to ourselves. And you demonstrate what FREEDOM actually means. Many thanks sir.

@A.M. Fortas. Thanks for checking in. I’m glad you enjoyed that video. I picked up a few planes after retiring from the airlines and had so much fun I thought I had to share the enjoyment on KZbin. Tasmania looks like a pretty amazing place to live. I think it would be great to explore the whole island by air if you had access to an airplane. Are there many airplanes available there? How about airstrips? It’s still winter up here, can’t wait for spring. I’ve got a whole list of places I want to explore!

@@WheelsInTheSky Yes, Tas is gorgeous and there are large parts that are totally unexplored. The great southern wilderness has no roads and not even paths. Small airstrips are few and aircraft even fewer, although there is a chap in the North with a KitFox who does a lot of video flights. Me, I stick to my Flt Sim, on which a Savage Cub gives me access to every spot (almost) on the island and an Icon A5 to the lakes and remote bays..

@@AVMamfortas Some of those flight sims are amazing. I’ve been looking at the map this morning. There’s a lot of places there I’d love to explore. Can’t decide one just one plane I’d use, something with big tires might get you in on beaches and dirt roads. But with all that water I can see why you like the Icon. I loved your video - great job! It is so much better than what I shot with a GoPro on the wing when I was there in October in my C182. yes, I like the 360 camera for its flexibility. but I think the non 360 cameras give a better/sharper image. You really need your own personal camera crew to follow you around, lol, or use a 360! I am about to mount a 360° x4 and due to my searching YT for mounting options I came across your F1 mounting, which led to this Hidden Splendor gem. I’ve been into there and came thru the canyon too and it is even more spectacular than your video captured, which is saying a lot. I didn’t get video when I went there and sure will in the future. I ordered a mic pole and some other gadgets that will arrive this week. I’ll put that on my CCub before heading to AK next week. Had I found your vids sooner I could have tried your DIY. Pretty clean setup you did. I’ll do something similar for my RV6 wing mount. I wonder though, how are you able to get the great engine/prop sound without much wind distortion? It’s music all by itself!
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 5 ай бұрын
@stoldrag85. My X2’s weren’t too bad about picking up wind noise, but my X3’s pick it up much more, even when set to wind reduction. I finally just put little pieces of painters tape over the mics. With the tail mount in the prop wash, there’s more wind noise than the wing mount. With my Rocket down for mx, I’ve been using my 185 more. I removed the cargo door and have been using my Canon R6 on a gimbal to get video while my buddy flies. It’s been so much fun, I think I’ll post a video in the next few weeks. PS., my X4 is coming tomorrow, I thought today was Monday??

@MYOB Boy. Yes, that’s it. Both Insta360 and GoPro cameras remove the selfie stick- as long as the camera is mounted parallel and in line with the selfie stick. If you mount the camera crooked, the stick will show up. There’s nothing special you have to do, the cameras does it all.

Great vid a always, thanks. I noticed you kept your tailwheel very low on the t/o run. I've used this technique myself on occasions, mainly on runways with the potential to damage the prop, was that you reason or something else that I could add to my toolbox of techniques? (I run an Aymar Dymuth on my RV4). I love the way the canyons have been scoured out, wow, look at that ;). An interesting strip and you need to be quick on your feet at the midsection and tingling climb out, fantastic!

@WheelsInTheSky 2 жыл бұрын
@watchfordpilot A fellow told me the 185 is best taken off that way, instead of trying to fly it like my Rocket! I like it, and use the same technique on asphalt to. Kind of a soft field take off. But you’re right, even though the 185’s prop sits high above the ground, I’m concerned about damage. That’s also why I bring in the power a bit slow, to prevent sucking up debris. Although, some may disagree, I had plenty of runway. It was such an amazing place. And, there are so many more places. Can’t wait to go back and camp and spend more time exploring! @WheelsInTheSky

@Roberto Valls. Hi Roberto. I’ve probably been in and out of the strip a dozen times and had no more than a little light chop with 10 mph winds at the strip. Of course, it’s always a consideration before dropping into the canyon. We don’t push it. Once last summer, a storm was approaching from the south late in the day, we wanted to leave, but with strong winds also out of the south, we anchored our planes in camped for the night. So, with normal precautions, it’s not a problem.

I have flown in there a few times in my 185 and have enjoyed it immensely. I flew there in late October to enjoy a cup of coffee and the scenery. Pretty soon two planes and a trike show up, and then a bunch of ATVs. Found myself at an impromptu fly in. One of my best days in 2021.

@GW. I’ll bet that was cool! Just when you thought you were the only one in the world. Amazing how people just show up out of no-where. Here winter is just starting, and I can’t wait for spring!

@jcmcclain57. Thanks. I get asked that a lot. I have to say, no skill on my part. I just turn on the camera and hope something good happens. But, I did make a video on how I do it. Hope it helps. Let me know if you have any questions. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3yunIOGmNdsipY

@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks, I will!!! It was amazing to me to see the viewing point leading your left wing tip. Nice flying, that was a tight canyon. I agreed with your comment on taking off, those walls would be to close for my comfort for sure, but you are obviously well experienced with that type of flying. I never did any grass strip flying save one soft field take off during my private training. Nice bird also!

@Martin Kaufmann Hi Martin. Yes it is. Pretty typical of a 185. Someday I’ll replace my engine with a 550. Same power, but lower RPM. But, I have to say, that noise is my son’s favorite part. He loves it when we takeoff out of Johnson Creek and everyone has their ears covered. Thank you and thanks for watching!

@@tinolino58 Hey Martin. Yeah, I wish it were quieter. But 185’s with a big prop and spinning at 2850 make a lot of noise. That’s why I try to reduce rpm’s fairly quick after take off. Some day I’ll change out my 520 for a 550- same power, but lower rpm. Thanks for watching.
