The problem is, even if the Tory's did adopt a load of right wing policies, nobody would believe them. Years of talking tough and doing nothing, has created a huge credibility problem for them.

They knew they were going to lose the general election. They only called a snap election to stop reform from becoming the mainstream right wing party by giving them enough time to convince more voters. It was too prevent tory extinction and it worked. 130 tory mp to reform 5. So next election right wing will feel reform vote is hopeless leaving only tory as a supposed right wing party with any chance of defeating Labour. So keeping the majority of thier voter base. Will be a new leader, new promises of a reformed tory party and "it's all fault of the last guy, we've learnt, we're your only option to win" and most voters will fall for it

@@Robc--jd6yh ok but there are a lot of instances of this being caused by specific circumstances like the World War Two coalition era having no elections or the collapse of the liberal party, split left during the SDP much later on (and just the generally split left with the libdems since then). The one time the tories ever managed to win a massive majority was the same as Labour has right now with the whole “voting against Labour more than for the tories” during the Great Depression. LABOUR was the one who managed to inspire a positive vote in favour in 1997, I would point out that by 1997 Major had done well to fix the economy in many senses and lost anyways so that was less about being anti-Tory and more pro-Labour. So no that doesn’t substantiate the idea that Britain is instinctively conservative except for surface level analysis.

@Lynnefromlyn Name me one thing that was Fascist or far right in the manifesto or that Farage or Tice or Habib have said. It's a simple question that nobody seems to be able to answer. The only extremists in this country are those that are always in power. The uni party of Labour and Conservative have destroyed this country.

How can they choose a leader when they don’t any longer know who they are or what they stand for? They definitely need to take their time to do as Tim suggests. I’m a Labour supporter, so they can take as long as they like as far as I’m concerned - but we do eventually need an effective opposition and a strong second party in our FPTP system.

Absolutely spot on! They have a conundrum. Farage has come out of the woodwork with Reform Ltd and grabbed the FAR-RIGHT (even though he laughingly says they are “centre right” .. Labour have shifted into the middle ground (centre left) so what do the Tories do now? They got rid of all the “one nation” remainer Tories (like my old MP Ken Clarke) so the6 have no option but to pick a rabid right winger. Bravaman’s or Badenoch or Jenrick are my bets. Any thoughts? (PS my constituency Rushcliffe voted Labour) 😀

Interesting that all these Tory commentators are arguing for a period of reflection and debate rather than listening to the people and making real changes which was Labour's mantra post 2019. It only took them four defeats to realise what had to be done so I suspect Tories will need a few more before they manage to face up to reality!

I believe that the likelihood of interest rates falling to 2% which they bid, but with the possibility of rising again, and that the thoughts of many would more on holidays & football than voting when a low turnout usually favours his party, were central to the reason for his decision for an early election.

All you've got to do to find out what the Conservatives are and what they're for is to ASK YOUR ELECTORATE. Fishing around for university professors and talking to ex MPs, and 'internationalising' your party is only going to reinforce the political bubble that led you to this situation. Reform are a grass roots party which has the people's wishes at it's core - hence 15% of the vote in the election. That's the point.
