NOTE: Any equipment used in the dyeing process is no longer suitable for food use
To try this experiment yourself, you’ll need:
- Fabric (100% natural plant fibers, such as cotton, hemp, bamboo, flax, linen, rayon) “Prepared For Dyeing” (PFD) or “Ready To Dye” or prepared for dyeing by you (by washing in Textile Detergent and no fabric softener used in washer or dryer)
- Professional Textile Detergent / Synthrapol®
- Retayne® dye fixative
- Soda ash (Sodium Carbonate) (this is not baking soda)
- Fiber reactive powdered dye (such as Procion® designed for 100% natural plant fibers)
- Rit powdered dye
- Rit dye fixative
- large (at least 2 gallon) plastic tub with lid (to store soda ash solution, which will stay effective for about 6 months)
- 1-cup measure (for measuring powdered soda ash)
- Long handled plastic stirring spoon (for mixing soda ash solution)
- Plastic spoons (for sprinkling dye)
- Dust mask (for preparing soda ash solution, and sprinkling powdered dye)
- Rubber gloves
- Plastic (to protect work surface)
- Ice (cubes or crushed, or unpacked snow)
- Rags (to cover projects and/or clean work surface afterwards)
- Small containers with holes in the bottom (to hold projects)
- metal rack
- plastic tub (to collect melted ice/dye)
- access to water
If you need help sourcing items on the supply list, feel free to leave a comment.
If you like tie dye, you'll love ice dye! Using melting ice and powdered dye, create colorful one-of-a-kind fabric, clothing or scarves. Perfect for beginners.

In my experience, RIT dyes require heat to bring out the full color range when using it for tie dye. I mix my powder dye into a squirt bottle and use it like any other dye, but then I microwave the piece in a microwave safe container for a few minutes. If I want even more color range I just squirt a tiny amount of black dye on top of what I already put on the shirt and i end up with a really good range of color. I haven’t used the dye fixative with this method but I might give it a shot.

That second dye, the Proceon, had such wonderful depth, while the Rit version seemed very flat. I wonder if the main difference was the soda ash soak, meaning the Rit may look more like the Proceon on soda ash soaked items. The tip about adding a thin fabric layer under the ice and dye is awesome, tfs.

I think you may be right about the soda ash soak giving the Rit a boost. It won't enable the lovely color nuances that Procion yields, but it can help give a richer, cleaner look to the Rit.

Ugh wish I found this months ago. I have my own clothing line and experiment with dyeing among other printing techniques for a competitive and unique advantage. I went bought tons of the rit colors dyed a few pieces and discovered they were not ready for prime time in my opinion, just seemed like a faded color not matter how long I left them in a stove top dye bath. The Procion even on this video looks more vibrant and rich. Definitely will give this a try Thanks

Hi Unfltrd Passion, If you haven't tried it already - RIT makes a color remover that might let you start over with the pieces that are already dyed. The procion dyes last so much longer. Rit dye fades quickly no matter how you set it. Procion dyes will stay vivid until even the highest quality cloth falls apart. Hello Nancy> In watching Mr TieDye suggests washing the garment in Synthrapol initially and also for the final wash in the machine. What say you please?
@NancyGamon
@NancyGamon 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, I say Mr. Tie Dye is spot on. It's good practice to wash items in textile detergent (such as Synthrapol) before dyeing to remove any sizing, oils from fingerprints, etc. (If textile detergent is not available for this initial step, then just wash the item in regular detergent, using no fabric softener in either the washer or dryer, since softener can coat the fabric and prevent the dye from latching on.) When working with Procion fiber reactive dyes, after the dye has had time to set, rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear, then wash in hot water with textile detergent (such as Synthrapol) before proceeding with the next steps. Textile detergent is specially designed to draw out any loose dye from the fabric and hold it in the water, away from the fabric. I hope you have a fun time experimenting! Nancy

Does a person have to use the textile detergent and after dye rinse? Ive seen a lot of videos that do not. Thanks
@NancyGamon
@NancyGamon 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, using textile detergent before the soda ash soak will help remove anything lingering in the fabric that might keep the dye from attaching to the fabric properly (like sizing, grease from fingerprints, or fabric softener). After dyeing, and rinsing, washing in textile detergent will help remove any lingering loose dye (although some people swear by a mild dish detergent like Dawn). After that, a soak in Retayne is an optional finishing step; the fixative helps keep the dyed item from bleeding color in the family laundry later on. Does that answer your question? Nancy
@chrisfils1993
@chrisfils1993 4 жыл бұрын
how much exactly is a sploosh of Retayne? like one squirt of the bottle? and also into how much water?
@NancyGamon
@NancyGamon 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, that is a valid question!! I usually use just enough hot water to cover the fabric completely. Check the bottle for instructions to be sure, but the bottle of dye fixative I have on hand says to use 1 ounce of fixative per pound of fabric. I don't feel particularly inclined to precisely weigh and measure either one of those things, hence the splooshing. If I'm using red dyes, or if the fabric is hefty (like a thick knit) I tend to pour in a bit extra Retayne for good measure. Nancy

I just did some tie dye using Dylon hand wash stuff. It washes to quite a used look which I wish to improve. Is procion better than Dylon or basically the same? Here in the UK we have a few brands of procion which is lucky, but I imagine they're all pretty similar.
@NancyGamon
@NancyGamon 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, Thanks for this interesting question! I did some poking around, and it looks like Dylon is not a Procion dye. Instead, it appears that Dylon may be roughly equivalent to the brand Rit. I personally prefer Procion dyes for more vibrant color and longer lasting results. (Results do not seem to be impacted by what company you purchase the Procion from.) If you give Procion a try, write back and let me know what you think. Nancy

Hi Zuleyha, Step 1: (wear rubber gloves) wash fabric (made from 100% plant fiber) in textile detergent in hot water Step 2: (wear dust mask and rubber gloves) soak fabric for at least 10 minutes in a soda ash solution (1 cup soda ash + 1 gallon water) Step 3: (wear rubber gloves) squeeze water out of fabric Step 4: (wear rubber gloves) arrange fabric in or on container Step 5: cover fabric with ice Step 6: (wear dust mask) cover ice with dye Step 7: let rest 22-24 hours Step 8: (wear rubber gloves) rinse in cold water until water runs clear Step 9: (wear rubber gloves) wash in hot water using textile detergent Step 10: (wear rubber gloves) rinse out detergent Step 11: (wear rubber gloves) soak for 20 minutes in hot water with a bit of dye fixative Step 12: (wear rubber gloves) rinse out dye fixative I hope that is more clear. Hi Zulfa, These are interesting questions. I have not used Remazol myself, but in doing a little online research, it appears to be a fiber reactive dye (like Procion) but is less reactive than Procion, requiring more heat to set the color. So, if you give Remazol a try, cover your project with plastic wrap and put it in a warm place to help the color attach to the fabric and become permanent. As for Fiksitif versus Waterglass - I am not familiar with either of these products. Perhaps someone else will have experience to share. Thanks for watching! Nancy

If you put the Rit color fixative in a spray bottle and spray your fabric before you rinse, I spray mine while fabric is still tied. I'm using Rit for the dye. But why would you put it in 3 gallons for 20 min. when that's not the instructions for Rit the dying. Look online. I feel that Rit gets a bad name due to it being cheaper. Not true, I have used all kinds of dyes and if you take the time to figure out what exactly to do and how you can get the results your looking for. Oh and all the instructions for Rit she's using are for a dye bath. I do not think it even makes sense to use those for an ice dye. Also after spraying with fixative, let cure. I wrap, even ice dyed after ice has melted and I'm happy, in plastic wrap or even a plastic grocery bag and make sure to heat treat dyes. They set with heat, well most dyes. I set mine outside in the sunshine for 1-7 days. Depending on what I want and how busy Iam. This will make sure your Rit dyed fabric will not fade easily.

Hi Zena, It sounds like you've had lots of great success using Rit. Thanks for sharing! I followed the ice dyeing technique Rit recommended in their instructional video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2Wainpja6Zlnac You're right: Rit has since updated their recommendations (a couple of years after my video was released), and they now suggest a different finishing process for ice dyeing with their product. I'm happy to hear that those modifications yield better results! Nancy

The Rit dye was more muted because you did not activate the fixer with the dye in the fabric- as it needs to go in the microwave. I’ve been using it for many years. Nice items 🙂

The microwave! Fascinating. How did you find out about that trick? The directions on the Rit fixative bottle didn't mention a thing about heating the fabric. I'm so intrigued! Nancy

Could you explain this a little further, as in what the steps for this are? I read somewhere else something about the microwave also.

Rit is really more for beginners, it’s widely available, mostly easy to use, etc. Procion seems like it’s more for veterans.

That's an interesting point. Rit is definitely a less expensive option for testing out the process to see if it appeals, before investing in the higher quality dyes.
