Today I'm chatting with Aussie Chinese champion Ace 一杰 about his Chinese learning journey! How he went from zero to champion in 3 years, all while not going to China! And some of his best tips for things to do every day and things you definitely don't want to ignore!

One thing that might be nice is to have English subtitles separated from Chinese because otherwise its hard to only focus on the Chinese without seeing the English ( maybe English on top and Chinese on the bottom)

I‘d would be helpful to have the english translation at the top of the video instead of right below the chinese subtitles, because otherwise it‘s hard to focus on the chinese subtitles

I find it really good to be able to listen to subtitled interviews, but when you delve too much into the linguistic explanations, it sounds a little mystifying and I don't really like it. It's more interesting when things are explained clearly. In any case, the guest is very nice and fun.

Not sure why it's necessary to sound native Chinese. Many many people speak perfectly fine English but have an accent. In fact some native English speakers have accents that are incomprehensible even for other native speakers No doubt true for mandarin as well.

The goal of learning a language is normally to be able to communicate with speakers of the language. The closer your accent is to the accent of the person you are speaking to (or to other accents he is familiar with), the easier it will be to understand. What's the point of learning a language if people have a difficult time understanding what you say, or even fail completely to understand what you say? That's the purpose of accent reduction.

Many people judge people based on their accent, and consequently will fear being judged by their own accent.

I don't understand this obsession either. This is a completely wrong approach, in my opinion. As if an accent is something shameful or shows that you speak the language badly. You can speak a foreign language with an accent, but perfectly well, if you learned it, say, after the age of 25.

I don't understand why you don't include soft subtitles instead of the chinese+pinyin+english thing... It would literally be less work on your end to produce more effective language learning material

Exactly! I requested it so many times but neither Rita nor her husband ever did it... that`s a pity because I`m a great fan of importing the CHINESE subtitles into reader software like LingQ. Usually, I automatically quit when a Chinese channel does not do that or there is English speaking/explanation and I often recommend those KZbinrs to go watch Dashu Mandarin or Li Can Easy Mandarin to see what an ideal Chinese channel for learners looks like.

Good pickup! Tones are one of the biggest challenges for me. Just comes back to my message in the interview though, don't be too afraid of making mistakes, go out there, dare to speak, and have new experiences!

I don't understand this obsession with speaking without an accent. This is a flawed approach, in my opinion. As if an accent is something shameful or shows that you speak the language badly. If you learned a foreign language later in life, say at the age of 25, 30 or 35, you will almost certainly retain an accent, but you can speak that language perfectly well despite your accent. When you learn a foreign language, the goal is not that no one notices that you are a foreigner, the goal is to communicate well in this language.
