Aw man, I auditioned for the English version of the game with that opening scene, I remember it well. I recorded it several times while in studio. I got shortedlisted for Erlang in that same scene, but they let me try for Wukong too. For Erlang in that scene when he's talking about how "special" Wukong is, they told me to kind of make it sound like I'm mocking him instead of praising him. Ultimately they went with other actors though for those two🥲🥲🥲I'll try harder for the next game!

I already have HSK6, but playing Wukong in Chinese sometimes still can be pretty hard for me, since it uses a lot of very old-fashioned and literary language. Especially in those stories written in the bestiary (as for the poems at the beginning of each story, I wonder if Chinese native speakers themselves can understand them properly :D). I can read ordinary books in Chinese almost without a dictionary, but Wukong sometimes makes me feel as if I'm still at intermediate level 😅

For Chinese it would not be an issue to understand these literary, formal and half-classical Chinese. As it is common in written language, history articles and classics. And moreover, Chinese grow up with learning Chinese poetry, history, classics, Chengyudiangu, idioms/Allusions and watching Dynasties TV series. By the way, for Chinese the more you can write in an classical and literary way, the more you are considered as knowledgeable.

I don’t think HSK6 would be sufficient to make you comprehend those half-classical literature scripts. Solely because the goal of HSK is for measuring modern Chinese language level. Classical literature is not the goal for HSK. But keep hanging there, you will get there!

It is not real literary Chinese, it's modern Chinese with a small amount of words from literary Chinese. Even the orginal the journy to the west book wasn't written in literary Chinese, rather, it's in classic modern Chinese, with gramma 90% same with modern Chinese. If you want to explore literay Chinese, maybe you can try Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio(聊斋志异). This book is in a very easy literary Chinese, it's a collection of short fantasy novels written 200 years ago. Educated Chinese native speakers will need some annotations reading it but overall is OK. Another collection of short fantasy novels is 唐宋传奇集, its lanuage is more classic compared to the previous one.

You should 100% do all the major cutscenes in this game - there's SO much literary and other things that you don't hear in daily speech and nobody ever teaches you in this game - especially the chapter endings where there's narration when you look at different parts of the paintings. And things that even living in China were funny to me, like zhu bajie saying "Qi sha lao zhu" in self-reference - I've never known anyone to do that sort of self-reference in daily life but it appears often in "ancient style" shows.

Im am an oversea chinese. for the first time I heard this word 啥 (sha)....I was shocked ? why this fellow called me crazy? actually it was a misunderstood. it means WHAT. Over here we often used 什么 shen me. this is a northern China dialect which is totally unheard of over here.

南方也说“啥”,其实这个字在文言文里就有,写作“甚”,而还有些南方话读成“ha”,其实就是“何”,做什么就是“做甚”或者“做何”,反倒是“什么”在古汉语里基本上没出现过,属于混杂了少数民族语言的北方方言

We do that in english too (more frequently than in german) topic comment structure e.g. "Man, to save you, that was my promise!" it's obscure and poetic in english but fully admissible (even more so in german). Here "man" 人 is both an interjection and the topic of the sentence. You guys are amazing 加油!

one thing I learned a long time ago (thanks to the 把 pattern) is that Chinese likes to put the important things in a sentence at the beginning and the end. The middle is less important. I recently got a reminder of that in my wife's reading club, when one of her friends interpreted an English sentence with the most important action at the end of the sentence, when the most important action was actually first in the sequence, followed by an auxiliary action. It might not always be true, but in the first example you provided, it checks out. Master, protected. Scripture, obtained. Who did it was less important to Wukong, and besides, he's the one talking, so you can assume it even if you don't hear it/understand it.

a good way to get at pinyin X is by focusing on English WH. Although American English redyces WH to W, in British English (even in Canada) hwat, hwy, hwich, are how those wh question words are pronounced. this will get the student to aspirate. then you just have them aspirate and sh. A better anglicization of pinyin X would be HSH. anyway if you read this far you should probably sign up for Rita's course so you can speak better.

12:57 I think calling someone a "dog" in English is almost always a bad thing. About the most positive term I can think of would be 'loyal dog' which would imply your dedication and subservience to another. Calling someone a "lucky dog" to me just sounds like a sanitized version of "lucky bastard". I've been speaking English my entire life and I'm struggling to think of a context where referring to someone as a 'dog' isn't at minimum condescending (saying "good dog" to someone who does what you tell them to) or outright offensive.

I believe that her interpretation is incorrect. In *Journey to the West*, 'ren' refers to the people who went to the Western Region to obtain the Buddhist scriptures. This phrase is introduced at the beginning of the story to emphasize the start of the journey, but by the end, it symbolizes the fulfillment of the mission - saving the people and obtaining the scriptures. There's no mention of using 'ren… and Jjn…' simply to 'bring the beginning of the sentence. that’s totally a misleading. if you write that in Chinese to begin with, we would only have the question ??? what what! She sound might read Chinese but doesn’t sound she knows the book.

As for ren (人), I think it's referring to Wukong's master, the monk. After all, he was tasked to protect his master in the original story.
