Dude you are have become part of the holiday tradition at my house. Every time I find myself preparing for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or family meals… you end up on the tv. I made you bone broth one year, that stepped up my cooking game entirely. Fridays in November and December have become family movie night… and we cook Stromboli. You know how to market the holidays and provide some seriously good recipes.

We always used the canned green beans/mushroom soup until I found a recipe 25 years ago that used fresh green beans and a homemade mushroom sauce. All the difference in the world! One year, we were short on fresh green beans and added a can of green beans. Looking at the difference between fresh and canned (bright green vs greenish gray) made us decide we would never buy canned again, even in an emergency. Never tried Ritz crackers so that's on the list! Thanks!

Green bean casserole wasn't a thing in my family, either, but I've always been curious about it. I decided to try it this year and will use this as an inspiration, as canned vegetables doesn't appeal to me. I bought the toasted onions a couple weeks ago because I had not ever had them and they are brilliant! I've been sprinkling them on everything and might need another can before Thanksgiving.

I'm a green bean casserole hater too. I see it is ruining perfectly good green beans. I prefer to make them blanched, then sauteed in butter and toasted sliced almonds, which is how MY mother used to make them. Back in the day they called it "almondine," at a time when adding sliced almonds to anything made it automatically fancy. I used to order sole almondine when we'd go to restaurants. But I would try this green bean casserole. ONCE.

I made GBC all from scratch on year. Almost like this. It wasn’t as good because it’s really a different dish. The classic one out of the can tastes the way it does because of the canned ingredients. Yes it’s not as “good” or healthy or whatever but homemade is not a substitute. It’s a different dish.
@anakreonsears67336 күн бұрын
Responding to @BP-or2iu True! Kinda like boxed mashed potatoes 🥔. I now make fresh mashed potatoes, but it took me years to move from boxed. My sister is still 100% boxed and I'll call her a fine home chef. Its the one thing she still does like mom made. (Mom was no cook. DAD was the cook He only made fresh potato mash.) Boil half the potatoes. Bake the other half. Get those potatoes dry, let them steam off that water. Rice the potatoes and douse with butter. Yes, at holidays I seive the potatoes, too. But regular days... nah..

Processed, highly industrialized ingredients and may I add, the natural flavor is not natural but lab produced. I am not going to be that unkind to my body.

Green Beans don't can well. I say this as a Brit who had them without any ceremony - just on my plate during a visit with family. I think Americans are just used to them being canned, so you accept the textures and flavours. Without the context and familiarity and nostalgia - they are soggy and without flavour and definitely taste like “70s Great-Depression Inspired” food, which is a special kind of American food, usually forced at family gatherings generation to generation.
