Gdy oglądam „Rywali“ mam wrażenie, że niektóre postaci, już jakbym kiedyś, gdzieś widziała. Najmocniej działa to w przypadku Maud O‘Hara, gdy na nią patrzę widzę Bertę, żonę Edwarda Rochestera z „Dziwnych losów JaneEyre“. Los jaki mąż- sam ojciec nieślubnego dziecka- zgotował Bercie, zawsze wywoływał we mnie najgorsze emocje. Declan jako partner, dla Maud, jest „lekiem, na wszelkie zło“, „plasterkiem na ranę“, oraz pięknym dowodem na to, że „miłość wszystko zrozumie i nigdy nie ustaje“. Maud, to trochę taka Berta „z problemem“. Miłość Declan-a, do żony jest magiczna, bo nawet jeśli, nie wszystko jej wybacza i za „coś tam“ ją „karze“, to więcej w tym troski, niż chęci posiadania.
