Thank you so much for posting this... I was there at this concert. There were only 150 people invited. It was right after he won the Best Album Grammy in '08. My buddy and I were sitting in the front row, right in front of Herbie and Joni Mitchell. It was a truly amazing evening - one of the most incredible musical moments of my life, and which I will always remember.

Joni's still making wishes come true. . . The river runs through her and we have the pleasure of being invited to skate along with her. . A joy to listen to. . .

My God! I can't believe the no-knowledge trolls on here! This is such a transcendent performance! And Herbie...! Wow! Joni reminds me a little of of Miles--always moving along a path towards that elusive goal of perfect perfection. You people are entitled to your particular favorite versions of Joni's songs, but you are NOT entitled to question her genius or musical integrity!

As an undying fan of Joni, who grew up on her music as a teenager, I loved the original version, and i also ADORE this version. Joni is beautiful as always, such a total artist, and Herbie is magic! I came across this album a few years ago, and it's just wonderful, the whole thing! I can't believe these self opinionated people who come here and say this is bad music and a sell out. That is so totally WRONG, to put it mildly. It's a fantastic part of Joni's art! THANK YOU JONI! And THANKS HERBIE!

The original was powerful and sad and Joni was young. Now Joni is old and this version is mellow and playful. Clearly she's not emotionally invested in preserving her art in formaldehyde. Unlike some of her fans.

Do you happen to have any of the other video clips of the other songs he performed that night? I've tried to find them on Yahoo!'s site for a couple of years now, and I'm not sure why, but they've been taken off and any/all traces of this concert removed... I can only guess that there must've been some dispute between Herbie and Yahoo!, I don't know, but I'd give anything to find the other songs they did that night - pure magic!

I love everything on this other than the drummer, it's just the wrong tempo. But if Herbie and Joni are ok with it, then, I'm off. I kind of reminds me on how Ringo ruined the percussion on "While my Guitar Gently Weeps".

Who tuned the double bass? the cousin of the producer who put this trainwreck together and set the singer up to be in this mess. She is probably still having nightmares about it. I hope she promptly changed managers to find someone who would look out for her art instead of rent her out and not guard the particulars.

@@snoolee7950 This was a full, heart and soul collaboration. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it, and you must own that. But Joni and Herbie speak the same language, and soared together for this.

I agree, she does have jazz in her beautiful soul. I love Joni and Herbie & have seen both in concert many times, but this rendition doesn't work for me. She's trying and straining too hard. She should sing what works for her now - no need to bring this one back, leave it be in its own wonderful spot. No need to rehash something that is already perfect.

Some nice moments, but doesn't work for me. . . First and I admit that I am a stickler for intonation but the Bassplayers intonation is just so off atcertain moments in this. . . maybe he could not hear himself, maybe he was doing it for effect . whatever but it makes it tough to listen. Second not in love with some of the phrasing choices. Last, it loses some of its childlike, innocent aura of tragedy when it transpires to be such a sophisticated jazz version of the song.

this is sad watching Joni Mitchell have to chase this jazzy rhythm bullshit while singing her best song. It looks she has been set up. It is clear that the emphasis is to Herbie Hancock, who is great in own right on his music, but this is not his music, it is Mitchell's music and it comes across like a trainwreck and is not working. It is frooking horrible. bad bad bad bad bad bad

@mingus66 9 жыл бұрын
As you know Mingus requested Joni. As well as using Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco, Don Elias, and Michael Brecker on her Shadows and Light tour. Joni is a musician. Herbie is a musician. This collaboration was long overdue.

Twicketer I could not listen to more than a few seconds of this, it is the very definition of the word "abberation." It is using a good song as grist for a real bad, late, and stale version of jazz. If you want to hear jazz, go listen to Red Norvo. This KZbin video makes me feel like I am on a bad quaalude trip. It is so foul. Oh! It is from "Nissan Live Sets" so they have been set up! By Japanese marketing people from Nissan. C'mon people, is it that hard to pay the rent? If you are over-committed to where you have to prostitute yourself, go back to the ranch and learn what is work. That is what real artists do. At least Mercedes-Benz would never jack an artist like this. Shame on you Nissan.

mochalicious .mo You do not seriously believe this muddled down far-from-the-origin fern bar music is jazz, do you? OH I figured it out. This mess is funded as a corporate commercial. That is why it is a trainwreck run by a producer who has no business assembling a show.
