Just started watching about two weeks ago just getting interested in this hobby. Planning on visiting some creeks in the future. I haven't done any dedicated hunting yet and today I found my first arrowhead while walking my dog along a woodland trail. A pinkish woodland period head with a chipped point just lying partially burried in mud. I saw the color first, then the knapped edges. I was so surprised!

One of the most prized possessions of mine is a corn pestle my aunt and I found at a field near Dayton Ohio back in the mid 70’s. She was an expert at field walking. In fact she was so good the local university archeology department asked her to help train students on how to walk fields and find artifacts. One of these days I really should go back to the area and see if I can find an arrowhead or lance tip to display with that pestle.

What sort of research do you do on what kind of settlements were usually found during these time periods? Have you ever found a cache of points like from a primitive worksite or quarry?
@Theditchwalker3 жыл бұрын
I have never found a cache...creek banks are near impossible to look because of sand here in Mississippi...you have to search the creek deposits. I have collaborated with anthropologists.,geologists and archeologists on many subjects. Ancient shorelines and the gradual receding of water through the archaic periods. There's several tributaries I hunt that show evidence of this eventual water recedement...where the feeder creek spits into the main channel there is much debitage.,flakes etc pottery.,arrowpoints...which are all indicators of the woodland period...as you move up these streams.,middle archaic artifacts are found on the second floor terrace...the third.,early archaic artifacts. Evidence of different water levels through the archaic periods which spands some 8 to 9k years.
