Just started watching about two weeks ago just getting interested in this hobby. Planning on visiting some creeks in the future. I haven't done any dedicated hunting yet and today I found my first arrowhead while walking my dog along a woodland trail. A pinkish woodland period head with a chipped point just lying partially burried in mud. I saw the color first, then the knapped edges. I was so surprised!

One of the most prized possessions of mine is a corn pestle my aunt and I found at a field near Dayton Ohio back in the mid 70’s. She was an expert at field walking. In fact she was so good the local university archeology department asked her to help train students on how to walk fields and find artifacts. One of these days I really should go back to the area and see if I can find an arrowhead or lance tip to display with that pestle.

Appreciate it Ginger....I will sometimes use a topo map to find streams. Doesn't really matter to me as long as I can see the bottom., I'll find one in it sooner or later....some are just way better than others because they are cutting through better and more populated campsites...It all comes down to repetition....we have a lot of rain here so these streams fluctuate a lot in the winter and spring...for example.,I may walk my favorite creek one weekend...and then it rains rite after..when it goes back down I have all new hunting ground in that same creek.. ..persistence and diligence is key. I live in north Mississippi and have walked some creek that have lots of smooth rocks but I've never found anything close to a point, and I'm not far from a well known area that produced tons of artifacts. What's the trick to finding them in the creek.

#Theditchwalker just subbed! Great channel👍 I have a Q., do you think the west coast has the same opportunities for finds as the East coast? I'm wondering because I'm surrounded by volcanoes on 3 sides of my county in WA state..🤷‍♀️ East coast is mostly old eroded landscape...
@Theditchwalker

Thank you for subscribing Cathrine....there are beautiful points made out of gem grade material in Washington. I think there was a larger population in the east.,but there is still plenty of stuff to find out your way. Of course.,I don't know the landscape out there....I would start in the valleys and secondary flood terraces

What are the points worth just out of curiosity? Do you keep all yours or sell some off? New to your channel and other than Rocks Custuoe this is the only channel I'm a sub to that is out specifically for points for the entire video.

The water's clean. All the rivers and streams of Indiana are swollen right now. It will take until May probably before they go down. Easy to see when they're red.

Winter time is the time to hunt here...the creeks go down fast and are swept clean from all the rise and fall action and constant waterflow....just two or three weeks with no rain and warm weather and they begin to silt over.

What sort of research do you do on what kind of settlements were usually found during these time periods? Have you ever found a cache of points like from a primitive worksite or quarry?
@Theditchwalker
@Theditchwalker 3 жыл бұрын
I have never found a cache...creek banks are near impossible to look because of sand here in Mississippi...you have to search the creek deposits. I have collaborated with anthropologists.,geologists and archeologists on many subjects. Ancient shorelines and the gradual receding of water through the archaic periods. There's several tributaries I hunt that show evidence of this eventual water recedement...where the feeder creek spits into the main channel there is much debitage.,flakes etc pottery.,arrowpoints...which are all indicators of the woodland period...as you move up these streams.,middle archaic artifacts are found on the second floor terrace...the third.,early archaic artifacts. Evidence of different water levels through the archaic periods which spands some 8 to 9k years.
