Yeah, sad to say, they're pushing the envelope and it's already ended in tears. From Gearjunkie in 2017: "Darren Vancil, inventor of the Creature Craft, landed in the emergency room with serious injuries after thrashing in a violent set of rapids on the Skykomish River Sunset Falls drops more than 100 feet over a 275-foot stretch of river. It’s a seriously technical and turbulent falls along the fast-flowing south fork of the Skykomish. Prior to last month, only seven boats descended this rigorous section of whitewater. ... Vancil took a blow to the head, lost consciousness, and suffered a fractured pelvis, sacrum, and significant bruising after he was pummeled on his attempt. Yet, he still swears by the craft."

One thing that it doesn't do is sink or pop. Since it is for lowhead dam rescues, that makes it extremely safe. Even in a situation like Tumwater...it eventually makes it out of even the nastiest keepers.
@thakidistight

Just like a raft, that thing COULD pop. Absolutely irresponsible to think otherwise.
@MrSoccerball100
@MrSoccerball100 4 жыл бұрын
I can’t find it now... but I read on another KZbin video that these things won’t pop and sink. Iirc they have a a bunch of separate areas of pockets of air. It one of the pockets pops just that pocket pops and he be thing will still float. You would have to pop almost all of these air pocket in the craft to sink.
@thakidistight
@thakidistight 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrSoccerball100 I'm a river guide, I run rafts that are made in a similar fashion. Youre right, the outside layer you see is not what holds air in but multiple inner bladders do that job. Its incredibly difficult to trash a craft like this that badly but not impossible by any stretch. They're great for low head dam rescues but dummies like this take them into water that is too dangerous for traditional rafts, get tossed around like ragdolls with absolutely no control of their boats then go claiming they run unrunnable rivers when in reality it's the boat saving their asses and not their skill.
@MrSoccerball100
@MrSoccerball100 4 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. I didn’t read anything about the guy. I was just watching this without sound at work and was amazed at the craft. I get your point. Kinda like a guy getting shot in his bullet proof vest and saying he can survive a gunshot. Were these things designed for low head dam rescues? I watched the Binghamton disaster and was wondering how a rescue could be possible. That’s when I came across these things. These really are engineering marvels. Watching them make it down the rapid after looking like they were stuck in an impossible spot is really impressive.

The fact they are strapping themselves to the boat witch is basically disregarding the first rule of being a boatman should let you know how insane these guys are. This isn't a how to boat class six whitewater. This is how to surface drowned yourself to death. It's not if. It's when.
@gailgator1272
@gailgator1272 4 жыл бұрын
It's not the same sport as rafting or kayaking different rules starting with equipment. Kayakers strap in with a spray skirt that's why you don't see a lot of sit on tops in class V.
@jamescrud
@jamescrud 3 жыл бұрын
Traditional rafts cannot right themselves so strapping in will result in you drowning. These boats right themselves and strapping in is what keeps you safe. Two different sets of mechanics at work here so 1 rule cannot apply to both.

You are never really underwater. The shape of the pontoons keep your body ever from actually going under the water even when rotating through holes. That is why being strapped into a seat is not actually as dangerous as if it was a kayak etc.

@flt528
@flt528 3 жыл бұрын
I just watched a video of a whole trip they did in these things, and I also wondered why they bother with oars. I guess for the flat sections. The rest of the time they're just bouncing along wherever the river takes them. These are swimmies for whitewater.
