Hi Grandma and Grandpa! Well you know I love when you do a field day and this looked fascinating. I think I really would’ve liked that store where they had all those Polish things in there. I would have been very interested in the mustards and pickle area. I grew up eating a thing called Chow Chow! my grandma made it and it was delicious. It was sort of like a pickled vegetable medley with a mustard sauce and you would eat it cold along side with a sandwich or with anything really, but it went good with a sandwich , boy do I miss that! We have one that I know of, a Polish store, down here in a place called St. Petersburg but nothing like the one you showcased. I hope you are both doing well and that you will have a nice remaining Labor Day! God Bless you both ….. Brian

Hi Brian we are glad you enjoyed seeing the festival. It was a fun day since we have not been to the festival in many years. I like Chow Chow also. It is a great side with a sandwich. I have not had in awhile. Sometimes we find it being sold in a Farmers Market or a specialty store. I forgot to mention about you sending the picture of the percolator coffee pot. Thank you for showing us. It looks like it was never used. We still have one that I received at my bridal shower. It is tall and thin and still works great. We hope you have a nice Labor Day❤️Grandma👩🏻& Grandpa👨🍳

I am SO ENVIOUS! I'm from Kansas where we aren't blessed with neighborhoods & festivals that celebrate the particular peoples who immigrated and helped build our beautiful melting pot. This festival would almost be like travelling to Eastern Europe (without the plane ride and jetlag)! What fun this festival had to be! And the food? It all sounded so delicious - real comfort food! Thanks for taking us along for the experience - and if you visit that restaurant -perhaps you could take us along there too?! 😂

In Macomb County MI on Fat Tuesday there are literally thousands of cars lined up out-side the Polish Cultural Center to buy thousands of Paczki. Once we accidently got caught in the congestion and it took almost three hours to get free. We were not even in the area to buy Paczki. If you pre-order from a smaller bakery it should be about 3 months in advance. When they reach their production limit, no more pre-orders are accepted.

Really enjoyed this one, Grandma and Grandpa! Personal connection to that part of the world. I recognized the Birchwood as soon as you showed the shutters. I've eaten there with a friend who is of Polish extraction (we've been friends since kindergarten). She still lives in the area, and, until she retired, used to work very near Polishtown. One of our other classmates used to work at the Birchwood decades ago; her family (also Polish) owned it when we were young, so it's been there a looong time. Polish Hall has been there forever, too, and was (and still is) a center for various functions. I attended something or another there once, back in the '70s, and they served large steam trays of sliced kielbasa and sauerkraut with caraway seeds. I've been (within the past 6 years or so) to the Euro Deli, too, and enjoy stocking up on kielbasa and other Polish goodies whenever I can get there. Been a while, though, and probably 10 years or more since I've gone to the Polish Festival, so I really appreciate you bringing me there!🇵🇱❤ By the way, next time you're in Riverhead, you need to go to Snowflake for their homemade ice cream! It's on W. Main St. That's been there since I was a kid, too. Oh, and another thought: Have you ever been to the Greek Festival in Greenlawn? I think it's coming up very soon (we passed the church last week and signs were up). I've never been, nor to the Egyptian Festival in Syosset/Woodbury they have each spring. Might make interesting content! (hint! hint!😉)
