I love using the glide baits. I use the rapala sub walk and the glidin rap. Also the busta jerk. I use a lot of similar baits just downsized for bass. I also use a lot of topwater baits with the same action like a Zara spook. They sure catch fish. I think the ones that work best suspend when stopped that way when the pike follows it's right in there face when you stop it bass can't resist it either they just bite it out of instinct. Ace video paul.

Barry that's awesome to hear mate. Well done on the first, and also the other two plus the misses. That's all part of it for me. We can all cast out a shad and wind it in and eventually a pike will nail it. Still good fun and I do it. But you just can't beat jerkbaits for fun fishing. Some people will say surface lures, but for me it's jerkbait fishing for all round entertainment.

Hi Paul Thank you for an entertaining and informative video. I'm fairly new to both lure and pike fishing, I'd love to have a similar setup to yours but it's way beyond my budget. Do you have any recommendations for similar setups at the lower budget ranges, rod, reel and even the lures some at £20 plus are very expensive. I'd also be interested to know what brand of braid and trace you prefer.
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 6 жыл бұрын
hi mate. Most of us start out with cheaper set ups so don't worry about that. You have to buy to suit your budget and you upgrade if you need to in time. If you look at the Savage Gear range (i'm not affiliated with them) they will have a rod for £40-50 that will do a great job and plenty of shops will stock them. A second hand abu Ambassadeur C3 reel will be about £60 and its what i started out with. As for lures. Don't spend £20 to start with, no need. A bit of bargain hunting on eBay ad so on, second hand on facebook, can't beat finding a few nice lures for a good price. there's always someone selling stuff. Braid, i'm currently using Nano X and Bushido braid, before that was Power Pro. If its a heavy set up with 80lb braid then i go to chicoslures and buy his ready made traces. If you need any more help, its easier on facebook if you have it, come find me. Or go to my website riverpiker.com and send me an email. Hope all that helps a bit mate

Hi Steve. Seen you liking my pics :) Well yes and no. None of the beast are actually in a video but I am working on some. Got some footage today and out tomorrow to try and do another film. I'm trying to get a bit of footage stockpiled so I can then make a few videos and get back on track as i've not done much recently. As for those beasts i've posted. fishing has been a bit tough so we went back to just fishing and not filming so we could just enjoy the sport. Gets a bit hard work doing all this on my own or with just Ady so we needed a break. We're back on it though pal, cheers!

Great Video mate, can ask something and it may seem silly im new to this type of fishing and just getting set up. I know for your heaver setup you use 100lb braid and a titanium wire trace is there anything between the two? in the sea I use fluro to stop the hooks getting ripped out as it has a bit of give and doesnt hinder casting.

Do they work best on shallow venues Paul or can you get sinking jerk baits
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes buddy. Usually run at around 1-3ft depth. Some jerks will work a little deeper say 3-5ft. Jerks will come in shallow, suspend, slow sink, fast sink options so you need to have a few to help cover different water depths. Clear water you don’t need to fish deep as the pike will easily see them and come up. Usual depths you would fish is 2-12ft roughly but done be scared to use them in deeper water

@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Its a totally different lure to other lures pal and the movement can drive the pike nuts. So often you will hear people talking about trying to wind up pike, use a jerkbait, that will do the trick. Slack line takes are ace aren't they! lol. sometimes there's just nothing you can do because pike are just too fast.

River Piker to be honest mate, it was great fun. A lot different from what I used to. Haha yeah mate I'm pretty happy now that you explained the slack line take.. I was blaming the pike saying it was a half arsed take but the truth is that it was my slow reaction mate lol!

@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Lots of features by the looks of it so just fish it all with a couple of lures and see if you can move one or two pike and see if they are spread out or in just a few spots. If there are any deeper parts or sheltered parts you may find the bait fish have moved in to there for winter so the pike will follow. Is the weed still there now the cold is here? There's lots of shallow lures, savage gear 4 play doesn't go down too far.

@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
No mate. I actually have three jerkbait rods. Depends which lures I fancy using which dictates which rod I take out. The Godfather goes on my SG XLNT 10-30 which easily copes with the 34g lure. Most of the jerks I have are 80g plus so I either use my old Jaxon rod or my BFT roots for the bigger Cobbs etc. I'll have a look at the set ups a bit more in detail in future videos.

@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Ha, I did that a year or so ago and never used it. I might dig it back out and try it again. It's my bodge job rod cam, works though. I used the GoPro and I have a bicycle handlebar (Halfords or somewhere) Go Pro mount which I then added some extra bits to help angle the camera over the reel. I've used it before to mount the camera on the landing net too.

Hi riley. No Musky in Ireland, what a shame eh. You'd have to go to North America and Cananda for those. However Galway is a great place for pike. Start at your nearest water and just see what happens. I don't know the area so you will just have to go see what you can find. Local tackle shops would help i'm sure.

Hi river piker just a question about the buster jerk how do you get that nice side to side action I've watched when you had the buster jerk one but what I've noticed is that when I reel halfway then jerk the rod down is fish ok, but when I only use the rod to make it go side to side it's doesn't fish right at all? Any advice?
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Its all about timing to be honest. Experiment with faster or slower jerks, longer or shorter jerks. Once you get it to go one way, you need to time your next jerk at the point where it has stopped its glide which will then make it glide the other. You need to reel in to gather the slack line but not too quick or you will affect the glide. sometimes i do three or four fast jerks and then a pause other times its a nice steady rhythm.
@Fishing7776
@Fishing7776 7 жыл бұрын
River Piker Cheers Paul was looking into get one of two custom jerkbaits what would you say are they best? From .5m down to 3m ? Have been looking around their hard to get! Do you like using custom lures over buster jerks etc?
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Jerkbaits and glidebaits are not the best for fishing deep. They often fish 2-3ft below the surface. This is plenty of depth if you are fishing waters to about 15ft, the pike know it is there and they will come up if you can razz them up. I have a couple of jerks that stay about 4-5ft and thats about as good as you will get. A good one is a Cobbs Crazy shad though not easy to get hold of. Ebay or maybe buy from Europe but expect to pay £30. I use both plastic jerks liek buster jerk and also custom lures. I do like custom ones though. You could have a look at Barry Robinson custom lures, he does a very nice trout glider. ;)

I've got a couple weeks off over Xmas and have a load of new lures I want to try out, I live in the Wigan area and am wondering on if you know of any good stretches of river or canal you may have fished in Lancashire, ideally close to me. Also what would my best lure tactics be? Gliders? Cheers! And keep up the good work
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. Can't help with spots pal, not my area. If you fish any canals, look for sheltered features if possible. Usually there is something like a boat marina or similar and the fish have gone in there to shelter from the colder weather. Bait fish will be there and so too the pike. Rivers, anything similar and also deeper water, big bends in the river. As for lures, always take a variety. The heavy soft plastic to fish low and slow. A noisy lure to wake them up or a glide bait to wind them up. Also have a variety of sizes too. They might want a big meal or they may be cautious of a weird looking large lure and so a small shad might be the answer. some days you just roll up to a spot, get lucky and catch. Other days you have to work to find the spots and figure out what makes the pike tick. Good luck pal and just enjoy it.
@jasonsmith891

Thanks for getting back to me, I think like all fishing it is just a case of trial and error isn't it! But your videos have definitely shed some light on a few things for me. I want to stay active and on the move in the depths of winter so I think live baiting along the canals and chucking a few lures out will be a far better option that sat shivering whilst dead baiting all day at my local reservoir! I am new to pike fishing and am still yet to get a big un' but once I do you lot will be the first to know about it haha
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
Jason that's a good approach pal. you need to cover some water and find the fish. I might seem to catch easily but there's lots of hard graft gone in over the years, and it still does go in, to finding pike. I have a few places I know I have a chance of catching a fish. All you need to do is cover the water and find the spots close to home. Livo and lure are quick methods for finding pike. The big fish will come eventually just enjoy them all.
@jasonsmith891
@jasonsmith891 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I have no doubts that you have put the graft in, the pike certainly don't come and find you! But if it was easy everyone would be whipping them out and it wouldn't be as much of an achievement! And thanks I am enjoying it, even on the blank days!

So after watchin this and still confused as to wots wot, I bought 2 small buster jerks, got an old baitcaster set up, never used much as caught nowt on it.Went to lake to chuck and see how the baits worked. They didn't run deep, I could crank them down, but I would have to cast way out as they only really got down towards the end of the retrieve. So I decided they were only good for rivers or margins on lakes.Then a pike took, I only had my stupid wasp net. Anyway, the pike was 106cm long and good nick, well fed. I've only caught three jacks before all by accident, so good job I've been watching your videos cos I got the fish out n back without too much drama.Anyway, 2 questions- 1, whats a good lure for a deep lake-about 10', and 2, whats a rough guess of the weight of a pike that long-I realise weighing is the only way, but that was not possible. Subbed now cos I'm into it now.
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 5 жыл бұрын
Right buddy, now you have the bug lets give you some more stuff to think about. Well done on the capture by the way, thats a good fish and hard to say but got to be a high double at least? Depends on how fat it is, as through the winter they will pile on the pounds and summer be much thinner. Right so jerkbaits, or glidebaits as sometime known. They are a lure that works in a kind of side to side action. Little tap of the rod and it glides one way then just as it is about to stop gliding, another little tap makes it go the other way. Get your timing right and they zig zag all the way in. Add a few pauses, sometimes longer pauses so it sinks. Sometimes you will have a lure that wobbles on the sink. Then jerk again, faster slower and so on. Most jerkbaits will not fish too deep. 2ft under the surface is often as far as they end up working. Sometimes the hit comes as the lure is moving, sometimes on the pause, so be ready. So your lure is running 2ft down in 10ft of water. Which is perfect! A jerk is a visual lure and that pike laying in the weed on the bottom is looking skyward for an easy meal. It sees this fish struggling, doing a silly dance and it thinks "i'm having that" and with one little flick of the tail it is up off the bottom and now just two feet behind your lure. Then one more flick, gills flaired and you have a 106cm pike thrashing around on the end of your line. I've caught pike on jerk baits in 20ft of water and i've caught pike on lures running 4ft down in 45ft of water. Think of lures in different styles for different things. A soft lure with a weight on you can cast out, let it sink to the bottom and then slowly retrieve and work it 1-2ft off the bottom. A medium diving crank with a small lip might be working at 4-5ft depth. not only do you need to cover the various depths, but you need to cover the various styles to find out what that trigger is. On that day your zig zagging jerk got the attention, on another day that low and slow soft bait. So have a look at a few different styles of lures and try to pick something to fit a few styles. You will then start to find out what each one does differently and then use then when you think it will work best. Try not to worry too much about depth if you are only fishing in ten feet of water because that isn't deep at all for pike. Though keep in mind that on another day they might only be hitting that very slow and low lure that is slowly banging on the bottom also. Hope all that helps answer a few questions and more importantly makes you think of a few more questions. You're fishing from now on is a journey or learning and fun and addiction to buying lots of different lures. Enjoy! ;)

@@riverpiker Cheers for that, yep, I could not pull the buster down deeper than about 2-3', it said it was sinking on the packaging, anyway, I gave up on casting out to open water and was practising casting to cover and snags, got a belter and thats when the fish took. There wasn't much overhead room to cast, so some of the casts were low and splashed down, what might have happened is that maybe the pike was attracted to the racket (the lure had a rattle ) , I normally feeder fish this area and have had three attacks on roach I was bringing to the net, and caught one jack on single maggot once , whatever, I learned stuff about the two lures and casting, and the pike was a bonus, didn't feel like a double when I chinned it out, but then I've never caught a double of any species, never mind a meter long. Cheers again for all the tips.

The movement of the lure and that rattle are awesome for attracting the pike. Yes it is a sinking lure but not like a brick like some lures. It will be a steady sink but once you start jerking it again it will fish a couple of feet under the surface. Believe in that lure buddy because it is a catcher. I have a bster jerk video if you haven't seen it. ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGrQf4CPndKZkLs

Hi mate is there any use for a solid jerkbait leader? I notice you never use one? Cheers

You mean like the stiffer stainless traces? I've never tried them, though I have half a dozen in one of my lure bags I keep meaning to test. I know Phil Blakey makes his own and uses them. A stiff trace is good for helping keep the line away from the hooks to stop them getting tangled, though like I say i'm still yet to try it. The titanium is pretty stiff so that does help so I don't worry so much about it.

River Piker thanks mate I use titanium myself but seen different anglers use it saying it's better for jerks so it's darts more because there's no slack in the trace

I'll have to pull my finger out and give it a go. Side by side comparison with same lures would be good.

Is 8lb braid strong enough for small jerkbaits
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 5 ай бұрын
I’d say not really. You could get away with it for the few fish that might pop up when perch fishing with 8kb braid and the. You catch the odd jack. But if you are actually chasing a few jacks with slightly larger lures go for 12-15lb braid just to give you a bit more protection. Some of the jacks still fight like mad especially this time of year.

Great vid as always Paul, do you rate the Salmo jerk baits? Cheers.
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 7 жыл бұрын
cheers bud. Yeah they are fish catchers pal and they are simple to work. The salmo sliders just dart about so easily. Not too pricey, do what they should and they catch. I recently sold my last one but not because they don't work or anything, just because I prefer to use a custom made lure. They come in a few sizes too and different weights so easy to pick one for you set up. Oh, and they cast like bullets.

But the. What do you call an American style jerkbait? Cos its not a crank bait.
@riverpiker
@riverpiker 5 жыл бұрын
I think most people get it confused and think the American style jerkbait is just a crank. Thats why some people will fish with them and not use them correctly also. Most over here will see something with any kind of lip as a crank which as you know toowell isn't correct.
@BUSHCRAPPING

@@riverpiker I fish a lot of American style jerks so that's how I name it. But I can see why people just call them cranks. Haha too confusing. The worst terminology IMO is "spinning' referring to any lure fishing. Really annoys me because it's sounds like there's no skill or technique involved

Yeah i know what you mean. There's so much to lure fishing and the more you get in to it you start to realise there's much more than just "spinning".
