Looking back at this, I have unknowingly accumulated all of these lures over the past couple of years, and not cause a single fish on any of them. I think a lot of big lures are there to catch the angler, or perhaps mainly suitable to specific large waters that hold a good head of big pike. I have had more pike on a cheap white/yellow 3" Kopyto than any other lure in my box.

I can attest to.those savage gear lip lures! Really food beginner lures. Especially if you dont usually have the patience to put pauses into the lures. Its really easy to work them and the action encourages you to pause. Iv got the Rudd pattern. Loads of flash but still looks pretty natural. It looks like a wobbled deadbait that's just got a little hit of life left in it. You can work it fast/slow and in open water and around small Snaggy swims. I recently got a really nice 7.5lber fat pristine pike on it. And I'm used to catching 2-4lbers lol so it was a nice fish

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

River Piker..... Question. I've lost 4 hard eels to date all on casting. I've a 150g rod and a baitcaster. what braid do you recommend? diameter and Breaking strain? Keep up the good work👍
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+Brian Thomas Hi Brian. I use 80lb Power Pro braid on my baitcaster. You need a decent sized reel though. Still lose the odd lure, lost a pig shad today, but get plenty of them back. Only other thing you can do is use cheaper lures until you work out where the snags are. Then use lures to suit the depths. don't forget the tail on the hard eel can be switched so it runs shallow. Hope that helps mate, cheers

ERICTHEKING68 I often just have moss green boring colour, no particular reason why. Ady has high vis which he says helps him see where his lure is etc. We both catch plenty of fish between us so not worried the hi vis puts fish off. I also think Ady buys the coloured braids because he likes to look a bit tarty and match the colours up. A bit like our lass with the living room cushions etc.

I haven't caught any real monsters but some 3 or 4 footers on a decently light bass rod and 12 copolmer line, there is no snags where I fish so I really just relay on my drag and steel leader. Helps to have a good reliable reel, my Lews speed spool does that perfectly for me. I have had the best luck with lipless crankbaits like the cotton coredell super spot. These lures are mostly to big to use with my combo but hopefully I can have a dedicated Pike and Catfish combo soon. Great video!
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
Setthehook Fishing Pike of that size are awesome fun on the light gear mate, and so long as you are sensible (using your drag well like you explained) then it's a great way to fish. I'm often fishing really snaggy rivers with everything from sunken trees, iron girders and the occasional shopping trolley so that's the reason we go so heavy. Also with the really big lures it helps stop a crack off when you get it wrong! lol. Getting your bigger combo will be great though so you can target the pike with bigger lures and those cats will be fun.

Regarding the addition of lead wire to help the sinking, here in the States a better choice might be copper wire. So many waterways request fishermen not to use lead weights anymore, because lead is toxic.
@riverpiker8 жыл бұрын
good idea pal. Is there much difference in weight do you think, i'll have to check. With some of my lures i drill and add the weight inside the seal up again but out on the bank sometimes you quickly need to adapt a lure.
@Sysiphistication8 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that lead is heavier than copper. Perhaps adding the Cu wire to both sets of treble hooks would offset the difference. Weights within the lures would be a good application prior to one's outing.

Your videos are amongst the best pike videos out there-great quality sound, image, straightforward instructions and no fancy pants talk! One question please-I’ve noticed that not many of those lures look very much like a real dace, chub, or perch? They are crazy unnatural colours that look more like a Hells Ángels Harley Davidson petrol tank! As a novice, can you tell me Why are Pike would choose something that doesn’t look real? I’ve noticed this also with American bass lures. Thank you and tight lines. (I’ve never caught a pike).
@riverpiker4 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy thanks for the great feedback. I've just got a new camera and new microphone so the new videos will be even better quality. This is how i think the bright colours and silly shapes etc work. Have you seen the wildlife documentaries showing the african plains? So you have masses of wildebeest all grazing and a pride of lioans all laid up chilling out in the sun. All the wildebeest look pretty much the same. But eventually on comes in range that is limping, smaller or just stands out from the crowd in some peculiar way. All the lions spot this and are suddenly interested in this one. That's what your lure is doing. It just looks different or acts different to all the roach etc and it gets their attention. So even if you use a natural looking lure, try your best to make it look injured and stand out to everything else. Good luck chasing the pike matey, i hope you get one soon. Tight lines.
@81Badger814 жыл бұрын
River PikerThanks for the comprehensive explanation and it makes sense - I’d forgotten that baitfish tend to shoal, And as you say, predators will look for easy pickings out of a uniform school of fish. I’ve never fished for pike-most of my freshwater fishing has been done in in South America (south of Chile) for trout and salmon. Down there snobs tend to fly fish and rockers like me tend to use bog standard silver and copper spoonsand mepps style spinners. I’ve never caught a trout on a salmon on flashing neon jigs even though I’ve tried as they’re more fun to spin The biggest fish I’ve ever caught in my life was a 10 kg king salmon, that I caught over a shallow section of a river not more than 2 feet deep, with a tiny mepps spinner smaller than my little finger! I live in South East London, and there is nowhere to fish unless you join a club and then you’re restricted and they have all these rules against pike fishing in the summer and autumn. All I want to do is just walk along a stretch of river with a handful of lures just like you do in your videos. Bloody southerners and their rules and regs!! But I do reluctantly understand: there are irresponsible people that don’t practice catch and release, if you know what I mean. Tight lines back and keep doing what you’re doing!

Can work both ways pal. Pike are really drawn to the rattle of a lure. It can be a big help on tough days. however try not to over use it. On pressured waters, pike learn, and they become weary of the same things. So the noise could, (i can't prove it) work against you then. Having a buster jerk, a savage gear low rider or a noisy squirrely burt can be a big help

Hi mate. Cracking video. I'm looking into getting a new rod for spinning as mine is a bit lightweight. I heard yours is a BFT Roots 160gram jerkbait rod. I have been using much smaller lures - is this rod therefore unsuitable? I have just joined a club which has big pike in their rivers and wondered whether the rod would be suitable. With bigger pike I want to up my gear and potentially the size of the lures too. Do you use this rod for dead baiting too? Cheers.
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+winchuni22 Hi mate. I'd say it is too big for what you want for now especially if it's a massive step up in size. If you are not sure it's what you want then may be there's your answer. However using big lures can be the answer to catching those bigger pike so using big lures rather than small spinners is often the way to go (but big pike do take small lures). What I would suggest you do is have a look around and see what kind of lures you fancy. Are you wanting to go from spinners and small plugs and instead use something like the savage gear 13cm 4 plays, 5 inch soft plastic shads and similar or are you wanting to go even bigger and use what is in this Top 5 video? As you can see the big lures I am using are quite a step up from the smaller stuff. Don't be in a rush to go out and buy a new rod until you know what you want. There's so much to look at and so many ways to go about it. I often tell people to look at rods 80g-110g range roughly. Bigger lures but not too big and often more comfortable for people to use more of the time. You can use the 19cm SG 4play, 30cm real eels, 15cm Fox replicant and many more. The other thing to think about is would you use a fixed spool rod and reel or a baitcaster and jerk bait rod like I am? There are heavy fixed spool rods, I think some lads have used such as the Savage Gear MPP. Comes in a few casting weights and if baitcaster combos are not for you they are a good way to go. Have a look at the video in this link. A bit of a rough guide to help people when choosing lure rods. Might help you decide what it is you would want. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5mraHWHqq55p9k Spend a bit of time watching a few of my videos, seeing what I use and also scouring the net to see what lures you like. Then the rod suits whatever it is you want. If you want to see this rod I did a review of it here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4S7ln-cadxrn9E so plenty to help you make your mind up. If you need any more help i'm always here mate. But just remember the more you look the more you get confused. Everyone is using different set ups but often it's just personal preference who likes what best, they all do the job at the end of the day. Pick a bunch of lures you want to buy. Group them in to a casting weight range and then look for a rod to cast those and a reel to go with it. Try and get a good quality reel if you can afford one and skip the cheapo entry price reels. Then just go for it. hope that helps a bit mate
@winchuni229 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. Thank you for the in depth response. I have been using an 8ft Drennan Series 7 Spincast rod of 1 3/4 test curve and lures up to 12cm, 45 grams (Korda snapper drones - perch, roach, goldfish) which are too big for my rod already. The rod actually states ideal for 8-12lb main line whereas mine is 30lb braid with 28lb trace. The rod is fine for the jacks I've been catching but I don't think will cope with what I could land on the new river (Arun). The other lures I have been predominantly using are the classic Shakespeare big S which has caught me loads in the summer surface months and the Abu Garcia Jointed Tormentor. These are ideal for my current rod with a weight max of 20g and length 11cm. I was thinking because I'm going to a new river which holds pike to 31lb that if I hooked one it would snap the rod in half. Plus to eak out the bigger fish it would be better to use slightly bigger lures. I think what I'll do is do a bit more scouting of the river and do a bit of shopping for a new rod. I think your set up would work, although maybe a bit stiff - I mean do you use that rod and size lure on rivers? I definitely need to scale up from what I have.
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+winchuni22 Yes I think you need to step up to help cast those lures. But keep in mind that often when a rod states 8-12lb line it is talking mono not braid. Braid is thinner diameter so by nature you can use heavier braid. so long as it seems to cast ok, don't worry about the braid strength so much. Your rod will land a big fish if you take your time. Problem is pike don't do well after long battles so the reason you also scale up is so you can give the bigger fish more pressure to get them in quicker. So if you find you are catching bigger fish more often, and not just a few jacks, then that alone is the reason to scale up. Yes I will use this rod and those lures on rivers. It will deal with bigger fish much easier, these rods are very strong. They will also cope with throwing big lures all day where a lighter rod will be a struggle. Same with bigger reel. But remember to do your homework with lure rods (like yours) and a 6ft 6in jerk bait rod with a baitcaster, like mine. Different ways of fishing a lure rod, like your 8ft lure rod. Also the reason you go heavier is to cast and work the heavier lures. A lighter, softer rod is no good for some of the lures I use, and that's where a 6ft shorter but stiffer jerk bait rod comes in. Some lures like reel eels and 4plays etc you can easily use on a normal lure rod, but I also use jerk baits which is where the rod is better designed for it. Stepping up the lures and outfit is about balance. I think you know which lures suit your current set up best already anything too big is a struggle. So that says you need to move up a size at least. With heavier lures comes heavier braid to protect against "crack offs" where your braid snaps on the cast and your lure sails in to the distance. Lets say you move up a size in lures, also think about going to 50lb with the braid. On a similar theme, the heavier braid will help you get more lures back if you snag up. Light braid on heavy lures and the hooks are so strong you just snap the braid. As a note, you would also step up your wire trace to 50lb to match. My outfit is 80lb braid, 100lb trace. Again not to land the fish but to protect you from losing lures and also not snapping off with a big lure wedged in a pikes mouth. I think your idea of scouting the river and also looking for a new set up is good. Those tormentors will still pick up nice fish, I used to use them years ago and did well on them. It's all good fun figuring it all out. if the big fish are there eventually you will find one, but enjoy the journey. Learn your stuff, get good at casting and working lures, water craft and knowing your river and the big fish will come. :)

@riverpiker8 жыл бұрын
Hi matey, don't mind at all. Have a think about the lures you will use. Do a bit of searching and find out what weight they are. for larger pike lures, a rod around 100g is a nice size to use. Will handle the SG lip lures, buster jerks, SG jerkster, strike pro wolf tail and similar. As far as rods go look for a 6-7ft rod rated around 100g. For a reel, get the best quality you can. The shimano calcutta that Ady uses is spot on. Larger round profile. If you don't want to spend loads of money then look at the Abu Ambassadeur C3 reels which are used by loads of pikers. If you want a lower profile reel I use the Okuma Komodo 364, there's a slightly cheaper Citrix 350/364. you need a beefy reel to hold the strong braid and handle the larger lures. Hope that helps a bit mate but i'm here if you want any more advice

Huntnfishnuts I know a couple of lads that love those Rapala glide baits, shame you can't get the Strike Pro lures but so long as there is something similar you don't always need the exact thing. The buster jerk is a bit more erratic than some jerk/glide baits so helps mix it up a bit. I do love a custom hand made glide bait though. Will hopefully do a video on them later.

Hi River Piker, Nowadays nearly all hard plastic lures rattle, what are your thoughts, if any, on lures that rattle putting pike off on hard fished waters?
@riverpiker7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joss. Mate you could be bang on with that. Pike are not as daft as we often think they are. to start with, they simply cannot resist the noise and they will charge in and smash it up. In time, you will notice that this just doesn't seem to work so much. It's fine on big expanses of water where you are always fishing a new spot but on smaller waters that are more pressured you can make the fishing hard for yourself in my opinion. I think i've said it on a few videos, on fishing a swim I will go for the silent approach such as a wooden jerkbait or a soft lure then go through my collection and finish with the noisy lure as a last resort.
@Enpassantful7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate for the reply. I think you are right, pike do wise up and become harder to catch on rattlers that they see everyday, especially when they have been caught once or twice. I am certainly going give the silent approach a go from now on.

My top 5 are: Savage 4play 13,5 jerk Savage real eel 3d 20cm (soft) Rapala magnum minnow spoon Rapala rattlin minnow spoon That's about it for pike lures for now, hopefully wolftail will claim a spot here! :) Subscribing man, these are awesome videos, very instructional with nice amount of action!

Hi mate good to see you found me and enjoying the stuff. Loads to catch up on and even more to come! Your set up is bang on mate. Cheap gear gets you fishing, you find your feet and eventually buy tarty gear when you know what you want. All those lures are fish catchers pal and all you need is the confidence to use them and you will catch. Keep enjoying it mate and cheers for subscribing. got a mixture of all sorts so i'm sure you'll enjoy and learn too.

Top video, you should think about making and selling a lure fishing for pike video, underwater shots of lure action, fish handling, basically most of the stuff you have covered for free but in one video.no need to show fish being caught, just cover the techniques.Price about 20-25 quid. One of the best videos for me is on nymph fishing for trout by a bloke called "Purple Drake", he's got a channel on here, he just covers the rigs and how to fish them without too much distraction of catching fish. You've possibly got a new insight on pike lure fishing with all the time you have put in, check out Purple Drakes video, he says nowt in it, just puts the info on screen and then shows it being fished.

I have had a few people suggest similar. Maybe i should think about it. In the mean time i'm off to check him out, thanks buddy.
@jaquesdaniels29646 жыл бұрын
@@riverpiker you'll probably have to buy the download for his video, probably about 16 quid, although he might have a taster on his channel, I think he filmed it all using a head cam plus his dad/mate doing the longer views. I've bought downloads to two other nymph techniques videos made by a top outdoors cameraman and two international flyfishing team members, Purple Drakes is better in my view.

How often do you get bites on these?

I have good experience with Hairy Killer made by Abu Garcia. If it's pike fishing Hairy Killer is the winner of all baits. I like it because it dives so slow i don't pick plants from the bottom. Pike will always attack hairy killer.. Spoon and spinner or a jig have a chance of scarying it. Wobler is also be great for pike, but it catches shit from bottom if you spin it too fast. and for the lazy people we also have worms .. I havent seen a fish that don't want to eat worm. Even plant eaters go for worms.
@riverpiker9 жыл бұрын
+Jack Fisher We could all pick out a different top 5. Good to see other peoples favourites though and hear why. I've never used the Hairy Killer I might have to give it a go.

River Piker Do it, best pike lure ever invented.. you can immitate any kind of fish.. You can even imitate gold aquarium fish with it.. That's what i did and I had 4 fights in 30 minutes, i got 2 pikes on the land :) Just introduce it very slovely to the pike and it will bite :) it looks so alive it's crazy.. Everyone have his favorite, but i think i found mine :) The older Hairy killer the better.. it sink slower and you get less dirt/plants from bottom and stimulate fish better when it sink slower..
@therealjackfisher8 жыл бұрын
sophisticated funk I used red/black (colour dont matter as all fish see either blue or gren colour as their spectrum .. pike see everything in green, sea water fish most of them see in blue, but solomon can see both blue and green.. so your orange red black is just a shade for the fish and the colour dont matter at all) When fishing with HC, you dont spin like you do with a spoon. You gently tag the wire to have the lure move through the water as slow as possible.. if you didnt catch pike with that either you were doing it wrong or there were no pikes in that place at the moment.. I have never ever seen a pike go pass hairy killer.. every pike will hit it.. big or small no matter.. just dont spin it.. tap ur string from time to time. You dont believe me i will make a comparison video to prove it, and i will loose allot of expensive bait on it just to prove it and i want it recompensated at your own cost.. Hairy killer is the pike/baracuda only catcher.. dont use it for other fish.. and dont use it in water where you are not sure if there is a pike.. you use allround lure and if there is no pike something else might jab it, but hairy killer only pike and fish with big mouth and crocodile teeth.. they will eat it at the moment you least expect it.. Im not sweedish and not advertising for them, i just tested that shit and it work much better then spoon spinner jig, worm or whatever you tell me to put on that rod.. even live bait is not as efficient.. Live bait can scare away your pike due to rapid movement. Hairy killer you control the movement. If you leave it it will sink few cm and stay there till you touch your rod.. The spoon will go down the bottom and look like old rusty nail not attracting any fish..

List could go on hey Clayton? Loads of ace lures but the best ones are the lures that you yourself believe in. You catch more fish on a lure you trust.

River Piker thanks could you do a video on how to catch big perch
@riverpiker8 жыл бұрын
I've got a few perch videos with some nice perch in. Usual tactic is to use larger lures to attract the better fish. If I get time I'll have a bash at it.

u do not need that heavy of tackle unless you are in a area with alot of snags i pull pike in on 20 lbs mono all day
@riverpiker7 жыл бұрын
Depends what you are doing mate. I agree about the snags and you can balance out your gear to suit venues. I wouldn't want to throw my custom jerkbaits on anything lower than 50lb breaking strain braid though simply because the first time you get a birds nest the line will snap and your lure will sale in to the distance. Have you had a go with braid for your lure fishing? Much more sensitive than mono and you can feel what your lure is doing or hitting on the bottom.
