My sister and I served in Rivers State as well and we tell anyone that cares to listen that Rivers State Native soup is the best soup in Nigeria..end of story! Mind you, we are Yoruba and both foodies and are not picky at all when it comes to food from any region. So when I say this soup is the truth, just accept!!lol. Watching this video just takes me back.I miss those days.

I love your channel I’ve learned so much about my fatherland and its traditions and food. Thank you so. Much.My Father is from Calabar he used to make us this soup, he had no wife from I was 3 yrs old, he was a fisherman when he lived there, then joined the merchant navy. Moved to England. He cooked the best African food ever, I learned some recipes from him, but they never taste as good as his, God bless his soul, I still cook these recipes I’m now 70.

It might be easier to de-shell the clams by giving them a flash steam so they open by themselves but don't over cook. That you way you can also preserve the juices and get rid of the dead clams that didn't open. Looks delicious though.

Juliet I cooked this in Spain and it is only periwinkles and snails that I bought from Nigeria, every other ingredient was bought in Spain so lets go! You can skip the periwinkles and buy more sea snails to make up for the snails. Ireland has a huge Nigerian community so I am sure you can buy cocoyam, palm oil and the other Nigerian ingredients. If you can't buy cocoyam, use Quaker oats, I have a video where I used it as alternative when when cooking Bitterleaf Soup and you won't notice the difference. The rest of the sea food you can buy in Ireland. What else is stopping you? :) Let's go!

Juliet Gabriel the way I do it is to shell them them (the sellers do this for me in the market). When I get home I clean them of slime. Then freeze. Bring them out from the freezer the day I will travel and pack it last while still frozen. I bring mine out of the freezer like 5 minutes before I leave for the airport. When you get to your destination, you put it straight back in the freezer. Watch the following video for more info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5iTfHp5eJyNp9k

Mitchell Akudo uziza’s Nigeria’s local form of black pepper, just like ehuru’s a local nutmeg. They’re technical equivalents but I don’t think you can oyibonise this soup with regular black pepper lol. Flo’ll clear it up for you anyway

Mitchell uziza seeds and black pepper are in the same family but they do not have the same flavour. For this recipe, you can use black pepper as alternative. You can use less seafood but like I said in the video, make sure you add clams. You can comfortably skip the periwinkles and the big snails. Do not skip too many of those tiny seafood because you need the effect of those tiny "chewables" in this soup else the soup will be "naked" as we say in Igbo land.
@FloChinyere
@FloChinyere 6 жыл бұрын
lol @ oyibonize - Obinna you are really up to speed on the lingo! For this recipe, it is safe to use black pepper, in some recipes, no. Just to clear this one up > ehuru/ehu and nutmeg are never equivalents in any recipe. They do not have any similarity at all. I don't know why oyibo named it African/Calabash Nutmeg. Nutmeg should not feature in the name at all as that just causes confusion on this channel and on my website. 😂

Thank you. Appreciated. You might find my video on Scotch Bonnet peppers, interesting. I had always wondered how we as Jamaicans came to use those peppers. Watching videos like these on KZbin made me aware of its origin. Ata rodo sweet oh!!
