I've always loved the 'Up To Speed' series but this episode was really great. The Information was solid like a buff horses muscles, but those animations though. For me, it was the animations that set this episode apart and made it amazing. R.J. Scaringe sitting on literally everything, James's mustache face on random bodies, the floating desk - all of it amazing and funny. Its been a while since I laughed that hard while learning something new. Great job to the whole team on this production!

I live about 30 minutes from the Rivian plant in Normal IL and have worked in there many times when it was Mitsubishi. I must say being a steamfitter out of Peoria IL and having worked as a contractor in that plant, it was falling apart. Rivian has employed many local people along with us contractors bringing the plant back to life! It's amazing to see the once empty car lots of Mitsubishi full again!

Ford kinda wins in this electric thing in two ways: a. they have a 12% stake in Rivian, so they'll see their investment grow there b. they have the upcoming Lightning and it's potential base.

Ford is also probably the front runner in the electric game for a traditional automaker. They leap frogged companies that have been in the game for a while like Nissan and Chevy and their offerings appeal to a wider range of people than the EVs from Jaguar, Audi, Volvo, etc.

I agree, of the big 3, Ford will be in the lead for a while. I think a ground up build might be better long run, but what Ford will do is use the most positively reviewed Rivian features and slide them into their future Lightning offerings. I get why they named it lightning...but I wish it was something else, because the SVT Lightning is the only ICE pickup I want, and the 2 names will get intermingled and confused I am sure.

@@levirassler4934 Initially, yes--the Lightning name will be a bit confusing and some Rivian features will make their way onto the Ford electric pickup in the future. Initially, Rivian and Ford were supposed to joint venture the electric pickup, but realized that they were shooting for different audiences, so thus the separation.

Well, in USA that is. I think the company to win the electrification wars will be VW. After ID.R, the purchase of Rimac and and the success of Porsche hybrids and electric vehicles they seem to be ahead and are doing better financially than Tesla or Rivian and Ford.

Missed out the very first Rivian (first two?) being made for the series Long Way Up. Episode 1 has the team visiting Rivian as they're developing it from a life-sized clay model and the team are stressed out that it won't be ready in time. Then in episode 2 they get picked up at the airport in the prototype and they love it despite some quirks.

Although still better than the cybertruck, I am left wanting to see what other automakers come out with. hint: I would be a sucker for a fake grille. If it gets “300” plus miles per charge, imagine what it gets with any kind of trailer hooked up. Now imagine trying to take a what should be 10 hour trip and having to stop every 100-150 miles and trying to charge along the way🤦🏻‍♂️ Tfl’s model x went from 350 mile range to like 150 with a tiny trailer behind it. Still a neat truck! Hopefully alot more fast chargers pop up and battery technology gets better for more range. And hopefully a technique than lithium mining with giant machinery, shipping batteries on giant ships, and getting rid of the old batteries or recycling them

They're definitely not going for the cross country towers with this! But gas vehicles essentially do the same thing. Pulling a trailer cuts gas milage in half. If you have twice as much weight, it takes twice as much energy to pull it - thats just physics whether its gas or electric. Unfortunately it just takes an extra 30 minutes to charge compared to a gas pump

@@ButtTrumpet100 Twice as much weight does not take twice as much energy to pull, it takes twice as much to accelerate, once you're at speed your losses are a mixture of rolling resistance (which does double) and drag. Drag has nothing to do with weight and at any decent speed is more significant than rolling resistance, so the aerodynamic properties of what you're towing is the more important bit, not so much the weight, most things being towed are extremely un-aerodynamic though

@@ButtTrumpet100 but sometimes it’s way more than 30 minutes. If there is multiple people at a charging station your charger charges slower, and it takes 5 minutes to fill up. And unless it’s the supercharger style which is Tesla specific you won’t get a full charge so you’d be getting more like 3/4 charge in 30 minutes. It adds so much time. Now if you are local, don’t drive super far, have a charger at home, this is an ideal setup! It is definitely cheaper to drive electric compared to gas on the same trip

There was a Donut video in a commercial in my commercial, it was interesting as usual...now I wish I could afford to buy a Rivian. I also hope someone at Rivian challenges James on their drift mode, explain the awesomesauce, why a truck with electric AWD would need a special setting to drift. Then do a video with James about it. @@ayebing ok ok. I am a Ram 2500 driver. Tacoma's not a bad truck just a bit small on payload and towing. You do know that in October rivian was at 3.8 trucks per day production and waiting to see how the ramp up increases those numbers for november. I don't like it but looking forward to the electrification of pickups.

I gotta say, their truck is really tempting. I love everything about it from what I've seen so far. But man, that range vs charge time just is a back breaker for me. Daily driving on the 'ole work commute-sure, no sweat. But going back west to visit friends and family? Ya not so much. Maybe one day it'll be common enough that asking your boss for a couple extra days on your vacation to accommodate just charging your ride for a cross country trip might happen but not right now...at least not my boss lol. And the lithium thing is for real man, it's a terribly toxic substance. I keep reading about all these cool battery technologies being discovered left and right and I keep hoping they'll make it to market. I think once we get some of those in place the EV market will really kick off big time. That and solar tech is still in the stone age but again, new stuff is discovered almost weekly so there's still hope there too. Until all that happens, I'm hoping Porcha will get the synthetic fuel thing going so we can all at least use carbon neutral fuel and maybe not even have to worry about the EV stuff, or at least have another option for those of us who still like the rumble of an ICE. :)

Great video! I like the fact that James actually brought up the battery issue. Making and dumping at the end of battery cycle. I think we are too quick to jump on the EV bandwagon. EV will not solve the environmental issues, it will only change the environmental challenges as more and more EV are produced. No one knows the long term consequence just yet.

Not mentioned in the video was the comparison of gas/diesel when it comes to long distance trips on and off road. The amount of people I've seen try and say a solar setup would keep them going or at least get them to the trailhead are hilarious. Nothing beats the convenience of a jerry can. It definitely has potential but until there are chargers out in the woods, I cant see real overland enthusiasts coming around. Like try taking it to another country without that infrastructure in place, look at "the long the way up" they had Diesel generators the whole time.

You're right, but the terrible range while towing is even more worrying. If lightning, cybertruck, and the hummer all have similar drops in range while towing then EV trucks will be a no-go for a ton of potential customers

That's what I'm talking about. The places they're most likely install chargers a nissan leaf could get to. Have fun waiting in line for a charge there lol. Trust me I think electric is the future but it has a looong way to go. People get stars in there eyes and can't look at the reality.
