Of course studded tires are going to give a big advantage to the Rivian lol. You can't just brush off studded vs non studded like it's no big deal. You're giving way too much credit to the Rivian when the tires are doing a ton of the work.

the following is from car and driver. i have a defender 110x with the p400. i have had it for 2 years and it is fabulous. there is no turbo lag because there is an electric super charger to compensate.. i am surprised as a car reviewer you don't know that. but then again you like electrics. We knew Jaguar Land Rover was planning on adding an inline-six engine to its budding family of modern Ingenium engines, which until now has consisted entirely of four-cylinder gas and diesel options. But we didn't realize the 3.0-liter straight-six would be so high-tech: This turbocharged engine is supported by a 48-volt electrical system, which powers an electric supercharger and an electric motor. Whoa. That makes the new Ingenium inline-six, at least in the configuration Land Rover is debuting it in, a hybridized mill with traditional turbocharging and electric supercharging. If this setup sounds familiar, it's because Mercedes-AMG's new E53 models have a very similar arrangement (right down to their inline-six engines). Thanks to its dual forced induction and electric assist-the electric motor aids the gas engine and also is used as its starter and as a generator to replenish the 48-volt battery pack-the 3.0-liter inline-six produces a stout 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar Land Rover says the electric supercharger sharpens the engine's throttle response, as it can spin up to its 65,000-rpm peak within half a second. That masks any turbo lag that might crop up from the turbocharger between the time the driver presses the gas pedal and the engine responds. (Remember, turbochargers are driven by exhaust gases-meaning there is a slight delay between the engine revving up and the exhaust-driven turbocharger having sufficient speed to generate meaningful boost.) The hybrid bits and 48-volt system enable extended periods of fuel-saving engine-off scenarios when, say, the vehicle is stopped at a red light or in traffic.
@joetacchino4470
@joetacchino4470 Жыл бұрын
There is still lag in a turbo engine, due to the need for the boost pressure to build AFTER the turbo spools. The electric turbo just reduces it, it does not eliminate. Nothing has the response of an electric engine. Not even a GT3RS.

the reason a turbo lags is because it needs to develop exhaust in order to spin the turbo. a super charger is instantaneous. a conventional super charger does not have lag but it does have parasitic power drain being belt driven. an electric super charger has neither lag nor does it rob power. the electric motor powers the super charger. i don't know about your new defender but mine does not have turbo lag. what lag it suffers from is a delay in releasing the auto brake hold and restarting the motor after it shuts down at stops.

The Rivian R1S probably is a great comparison w Defender. But the Hummer EV 4 wd doesn’t work when the TFL guy tries it in Moab, and they had to put 37’s on it due to the air lift always dies after a few minutes. Defender is famously reliable and fixable. That’s a high bar that Chevy hasn’t met yet. Rivian, if they can stay afloat though, seems like a great platform. But they’ll have to work on that air suspension!

It’s been well be documented but buried that all electric vehicles have massive carbon footprints. The original prius had a larger carbon footprint than the old gas hummer H2. We could totally alleviate any need for oil from conflict regions by increasing domestic production, this would cut the carbon footprint of fuel to a fraction of what it is now, local sourcing. All electric batteries components will always be a messy matter. We could source lithium from parts of arizona and california but the process is “to environmentally unfriendly” so Newsome and JB have shut down any possibility of doing that. Additionally our electric grid is still heavily dependent on coal and natural gas. Even in “green” California, where a significant percentage of their power comes from out of state coal or gas power plants. Look i’m watching this video because i’m considering a rivian, it’s just important to understand the reality behind the politicized messaging.

Has kind of the same harmonics as an I6 but a very strange, robotic sound. The lag is due to poor tuning. No excuse for a modern, direct injection and dual VVT engine to have so much turbo lag. It’s either an improperly size turbo (or turbos) or poor engine management tuning. The Rivian looks like it’s struggling to manage its hefty weight in slippery conditions. A 4 motor AWD system with studded snow tires should have far more grip than what I see.

Good comparison, but I’m sure glad there were no kids out playing in the snow while you were blasting through neighborhoods with not nearly enough traction to keep from hitting them had they been there.

To be fair, when you compare fuel use between BEV and ICE, use the kWh equivalent of the gas used (1 gal. gas = 33.7 kWh). So really, the Land Rover got worse fuel economy than the Rivian (I don't know how many gallons a 1/4 tank is)?
@lesstevens2370
@lesstevens2370 Жыл бұрын
I would use this formula 1 gal =33.7 kwh subtract 70% due to heat losses = 10 usable kwh per gallon works for most typical ice engines today
@lesstevens2370
@lesstevens2370 Жыл бұрын
Even at 10kwh a gal, the tank holds more energy then the rivian as it has a 23 gal tank that's 230kwh so evs don't have much longer till they surpass ice

Nope it’s definitely not! Also comparing a 400hp to a 835 is not fair! There is no problem with Land Rover power output, you also don’t need 800hp for off-road! There’d Land Rover with less than 200hp significantly way better than any electric thing!

@@EdwardC2 why? A td5 defender 90
@EdwardC2
@EdwardC2 Жыл бұрын
@@lawncare-4u849 Because of much less sophisticated drivetrain control. Traction control, stability control and in the case of the new defender, a rear locking diff. Lots of the things @KyleConnor was talking about in this video. Old defenders are way cool, but when it comes to hard core off-roading, and low mue surfaces, the more modern vehicles have it licked!

@@EdwardC2 mine has all diff lock on the low - range gear stick. Torque too? My shogun also has centre and seperate rear diff lock. The driver makes a difference too. Not just the car 😊. My freelander 2 is also surprising off road. I've not seen these USA channels do anything amazing like TFL.

@@lawncare-4u849 Old Defenders do have a centre locking diff on the low range stick yes, but that doesn’t hide the fact that modern technology exists. I’m not saying the old defender is terrible, they’re great! But a New Defender and an R1T/S will do a bit more off-road, and do it easier. Well hopefully the dual motor Rivian will!

Great video up until the last 4 minutes. There's no reason to drive like that through a residential area, it's juvenile and endangers others. Keep it out of town, you don't need to be the terror of the neighborhood.

Infrastructure prevents an EV Land Rover from being a reasonable buy, who wants an offroader that can't reasonably go off road in a lot of places? How am I going to go camping for 5 days or hunting 200 miles from the closest DCFC? They'll make the EV version when it makes sense to make it, give it 3-5 years and let them nail it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- give us an electric defender. That’s it. Give it to me. 🥵🥰 Addendum: full electric. Only front two seats. Volvo styling preferred, safety mandated. Just an all rubber cargo area for giant, sandy, wet and dirty dogs. Pleaseeeee Volvo. Don’t make me cancel my ex90 deposit. (We have an xc40 recharge and love it aside from size)

it's coming, but they are being pretty tight lipped on when. They hope to have BEVs available on all models by 2030. I think we'll see the FFRR for the 2025 model year. fewer people will balk at a $130K BEV Range Rover to start.
