For my style of hunting, feeder and stand (some times stalk up to the feeder) it would be perfect. 150 yards would be close to my maximum distances. But the cost is most key. I'm veryhappy with the DNV rig I have right now!
@CarpeSus11 ай бұрын
@@charlesfoster8814 Years ago, I worked for a vendor and we ended up selling some Pulsar Core RQX30V bottom of the barrel thermal sights. Lots of people returned them except for one guy. It was a perfect fit for him. He was killing critters that were getting after his chickens. So it ended up being the best, least cost thermal for the job. He didn't need to spend more to see father. 75 yards was about it and shooting would be a lot closer and the Core was a good purchase for him. So YES, finding what works for you given your budget is key. I don't know which you had in mind, but the S3 impressed me well enough that I think it would be fine for my hunting as well.

I have been doing some research on thermals and I am really new to digital scopes in general; just now playing with my first night vision scope (OneLeaf NV400). Something I havent found an answer to is, does the Rix scopes come with built-in range finders and automatic POI compensation based on range like my OneLeaf does?
@CarpeSus10 күн бұрын
@Kapok6 Good question. Unless using an air rifle, the optics are almost too poor for long range work at night to need the LRF and ballistic calculator. Rix Leap and Storm series do not have a built in LRF and BC. The Leaps have an add on LRF that will run the BC...but that came after I left. I would consider waiting to see what January brings with the Shot Show and NEW offerings. With that said, DNT Optics, Pard Optic, etc. may have what you need.

@CarpeSus thank you very much for the quick response! I grew up in the Midwest so we hunted with shotguns as rifles weren't allowed. Took all my deer with slug guns. Now I am trying to learn how to use rifles. I have a PSA 6.5 Grendel with 20" barrel. I can hit a prairiedog at 120yrds with my air rifles but trying to figure out this whole rifle thing has been a bit challenging. As a fellow Texan, (Fort Worth) and fan of your vids, keep em coming!

@@CarpeSus$1k for S2 and $2k for S3. Not too bad for what I’d be using it for. Btw, how did you calculate distances? These don’t have range finders on them do they?

@mark_luna I am moving today and not surfing much. REALLY? Then I will be owning an S3. Holy cow. Distances are done with an app on my phone. There are many apps that work. I use free Measure Map for android.

Really liking this company how’s the image on the s3 vs L6 (native mag)?
@CarpeSus11 ай бұрын
I have some more S3 footage coming on 1/27/24. You can't really compare the two because they are so different. The L6 has higher resolution and a larger lens, plus the optical zoom. So the image is going to be better and look better. The S3 is only 384 resolution, smaller lens, and so the image quality isn't going to be nearly as good, but it is plenty good for a lot of hunting. Based on my experience so far, I would be willing to say that most folks would be comfortable shooting hogs or coyotes out to ~200 yards or so, which is farther than most people shoot hogs or coyotes. You could shoot them farther, no doubt, but the image quality isn't going to be great and so it becomes harder to aim precisely. For example, I have some video of hogs at 350 yards that are fairly pixelated. I would not want to attempt a shot on them that far. I will have some video of coyotes at 300+ yards that are hard to tell they are coyotes except based on their motion. So this probably isn't a 300+ yard scope, but realistically, how many of us shoot or regularly shoot beyond 200 yards? In reality, most of us are shooting from 50 to about 150 yards and in this window, this scope rocks! Rix is a budget line of scopes, but have a lot to offer for their price point. I think the Storm S3 is a nifty little optic and at $1800, it is my choice for an entry level rifle scope for the person who doesn't know if they want to get a 2nd mortgage for an optic, a good scope for a person who only hunts a couple of times a year and doesn't and to spend 4 or 5k on their hobby, a well priced scope for the person who wants a guest or backup scope. Plus, the Storm is just so doggone easy to operate. It has the best user interface I have tried so far. It is pretty darned cool. It is both laid out well physically on the unit and is easy to operate with well designed firmware.

@@CarpeSus I meant s3 vs l3 but this is a great reply just wanted to see how both 384’s stacked up at native mag. I haven’t seen them personally so wouldn’t know those deer at 600 are easily identifiable as deer for me I think the s3 and l3 are just awesome the price is going to do a lot to the thermal world. I can see $4k getting us where $7k got us just 2 years ago very soon.
@CarpeSus11 ай бұрын
@@devinpeters654 The L3 is still going to be better, but you are going to more for it, but you will get the extra lens size (better for image quality) and the optical zoom. You will also get a heavier scope and one that can be paired with an optional laser rangefinder. The S3 is going to be not at useful at distance, but will be much less expensive and much lighter weight. Value-wise, they are both good for what you would pay, so it just depends on your wants, needs, and budget.

Im on the bubble and only really seeing you're videos on the search tab for the Storm 2. Im torn between the S2 and the T20 are whats possibly going to be y budget. With the T20 are you using factory light and what kind of real world recognition for Coyotes and bobcats should you expect with both these models? I seen your video's you hunt with a 6.5 Grendel and thats what ill be using to hunt with here.
@CarpeSus10 ай бұрын
256 is pretty low resolution. For hogs inside 100 yards, not too bad. For coyotes at 200, it would be a struggle, I think. If I was to guess, 150 yards would be the max estimated range for coyotes and bobcats and inside 100 would be much better. The reduced resolution does impact image quality and the image appears slightly wavy in places if you look closely, but this is only an issue at longer distances when the animal is smaller than the distortion. The T20, depending on conditions, could be a 250-300 yard sight for coyotes and bobcats (such as from an elevated position), but probably more commonly 175-250 (ground level).
@JeremyHayden-wq9el10 ай бұрын
@CarpeSus thank you for the information. I do realize the lower resolution causes those issues. But for what I am going to be able to afford right now those are my 2 choices. I don't plan on shooting long range with it. We don't have hogs here so my hunting is gonna be limited to cats coyote and coons!
