@@IronResistance growing in London for me. Asian usually refers to South Asian and to an extent West Asians (Leventine Arabs, Gulf Arabs, Iranians, Turks, etc). People of thr far east were usually called Oriental in my area. Even on Google if I write British Asian boxer for example Naseem Hamed (Yemeni) and Amir Khan (Pakistani) would be the top answers. So thats what Asian means to me growing up.
@Jonathanwebb1004 жыл бұрын
To be honest most of this comes from ignorance in the US. We categorize most ideas of culture based on the food that got popular in the US first. To my aging father Asian means Chinese, all middle easterners are Indian which also confuses him because he sometimes still calls Native Americans Indians. So growing up in the 50s didn't help his world geography. Also it's starting to get a little better in some areas, but most Americans call people Middle Easterners or Asian and don't have much idea of what separates them.

Yes this is exactly what I observed about Britain, they don't seem to make distinctions about race and don't self-segregate themselves by referring to themselves as "Pakistani-British" or "Nigerian-British". When I see non-white British on TV, I automatically see them simply as British without distinguishing themselves of their race or country of origin. Whereas Americans tend to make clear distinctions of themselves by constantly referring to themselves as "Asian-Americans" and "African-Americans". I get the feeling of clear cultural and racial divide amongst Americans.
@Germania98 жыл бұрын
They even intermingle and intermarry with one another. There are a lot of known examples of mixed-race marriages between Brits of different colors, be it former spouses Dawn French & Lenny Henry, or Charlie Brooker & Konnie Huq. Of course, that doesn't mean prejudices don't exist, as evidence by the white pro-Brexitters there, from Boris Johnson onwards.

Western Imperialism was and is worse than all other imperialism. Comparing it to the great Islamic conquests in apples and oranges. Anywhere the Muslims touched, we turned into Gold. We went to Egypt, and built the first Hospital there. We went to Persia, and built Bayt al Hikma. We went to Morocco, and our women built the first university. We Muslims naturally had the Golden touch. On the other hand, look at western Imperialists. Ravaging everywhere they went, Dividing the people, causing wars and destruction in pursuit of money. Just a gentle reminder to those saying he is not British, he's 'misappropriating English culture', etc, where the fuck do you think tea comes from? Certainly not the UK. Ponder on that for a while, dear degenerates. Did it cross your mind that whatever 'Britain' is it is a culture, a history, a society formed on colonialism, in the influence of foreign people and cultures. That's what makes Britain Britain. Do you think that we would ever have become the greatest country on Earth (not now, LOL, I'm talking in the 18th/18th cent) if we hadn't sailed the seas and opened our doors? Now I'm not saying I'm proud of our colonialism, but that's the point. Do you really have the audacity to resent the presence of non-whites in our country when our success literally lies on the back of invading and stealing from other countries? And the later immigration of Europeans and Asians, you actually resent that? Do you resent people coming over here, you wish you were over there stealing from them while closing our doors to them?

TheOneIndian What do you think I'm talking about when say indigenous culture ? I'm talking about the culture of the union that has stood 300 years and the component countries that have stood for over a thousand. Culture and customs and traditions that are very real, and very unique to our island. Why aren't we allowed to celebrate it and hold it up as paramount when literally every other country in the world is allowed to do the same? Complete post-modernist nonsense. I'm not talking about joe really care about a lot of the stuff that has entered the country in the last half century - curry etc. It's great but it's not indigenous. British culture. I'm talking the traditions and institutions that date back to the founding of our nation, that despite invasions and wars still stand,

Do you have many peers in your life that look Muslim? I've heard many stories from personal family friends saying how their family gets stopped at the airport (males because they have a beard and females because they wear a hijab). My Muslim Arab friend has told me how she's always being stopped at the airport because her mom wears a hijab. My teacher, who is Italian with green eyes and doesn't look Arab at all, has been stopped at the airport because her husband looks middle eastern. Another teacher of mine has a friend named "Dwayne" who looks middle eastern and isn't but still gets stopped because of the way he looks. Believe it or not, many people who look Muslim or have Muslim names get randomly selected...practically every time they're heading onto a flight. Even in the land of the free, unfortunately.
