Al, Regular paper will work, I recommend wetting the paper to keep the heat down. Also sand very light because it will leave deep scratches. Micro mesh is twice as easy and almost impossible to mess up with. Regards, Bob

I have not got into pen turning yet. It looks interesting. I mostly turn bowls Dose it take a lot pen turning tools to get started? What kinda lathe are you using?
@RJBWoodTurner10 жыл бұрын
I have a small Harbor Freight lathe. Pen turning requires the following tools: Drill bits the size of your tubes. Bushings for a particular kit. Some way to hold the blank While drilling. I use a vise, a clamp will work. A barrel trimmer to flatten the ends of the tubes. A mandrel to turn the blanks on. Some way to press the kits together. I use a pen press, a clamp or bench vise will work. Your existing turning tools will work just fine for the turning part. I hope this helps, if you have more specific questions, please let me know. Regards, Bob

Thank you Mike, If your tools are sharp it turns a lot like wood. It does seem to make a bigger mess though. I think finishing is way simpler that wood. Just wet sand and polish. With wood, I sand then C/A and if any floating debris gets on the pen, you sand and C/A again and again until it is clean and smooth. Then you polish. Much simpler. Regards, Bob

Hi Bob I usually polish my resin blanks at full speed when using micro mesh. I see you polish at the lathes slowest speed. Am I doing this wrong?...
@RJBWoodTurner4 жыл бұрын
No sir, There is no right or wrong way as long as you are getting results you are happy with keep doing what you’re doing. You may try slow speed polishing at least once and compare results to see which you like better. I now polish with Micro Mesh at 1,100 RPMs. That seems to work well for me and give the results I like. I’m always looking for other ways. Regards, Bob

I'm thinking of turning a pen as someone who has never done so before! I'm trying to stay on a lower budget and want to know if the polish makes a big difference and if it is worth buying after using the micro mesh. I don't plan to use anything near a whole bottle, and maybe just a couple pens worth. Thanks!
@RJBWoodTurner7 жыл бұрын
+faszfafawe1 it does make a difference. It makes the pen pop and protects it from hand oils. You don't need to buy polish, paste Wax, brasso, car wax, car headlight polish, any of those will do in a pinch. Bob

I just got the starter kit for these from Penn State, but I have a question. when pushing the pen together, you first push an insert with threads on it for the front half of the pen... I can NOT get (what looks like it would be that insert) it to unscrew... as of last you know, do they still make them to unscrew? I don't want to use pliers on it in fear or scratching it. I just pushed it all together being gentle and taking off the "lead" part of the bullet. Thanks
@RJBWoodTurner7 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Sanders Hello Ryan, They make a standard Bolt action where you press the whole front of the pen into the blank then they make the Magnum. The Magnum has the threaded insert. Best way to tell the difference is the standard has a 3/8" tube and the Magnum has a 10mm tube. Regards, Bob

Frank, You can cut them and C/A glue them back together. You just need to have two very smooth surfaces. Small imperfections can be filled with C/A. Hi Bob, I painted my first pen tube with blue spray paint. As I was using my micro mesh, I noticed that the bottom half of the pen (slimline) I could see the tube which now was brass again? and I could see water inside the blank from the micro mesh. Several questions. I just watched this video, and you do not use any standard sandpaper 150, 220, etc... you just start with the micro mesh? Second, what paint would you recommend for painting tubes? and do you use CA to glue in your tubes after they are painted, or do you use epoxy? I know it is important to rough up your pen tubes so that the paint will adhere, I wish I could send you a picture of this disaster I have on my hands right now. As always thanks in advance for your valued advice. Jerry
@RJBWoodTurner7 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Dionisio Hello Jerry, Lately I have been using a Q-Tip and painting the inside of the blank with acrylic paint from the hobby store. Model car paint also works well. I sill use C/A but only after the blanks have dried overnight. That way I can rough up the tubes with sand paper. Regards, Bob

I pour most all my blanks. This blank looks as if it has pearl mixed in with the purple. also, I use acrylic lens polish (blue) for cars to polish with. I apply a drop and at slow speed, I rub it on with my fingers until its dry and wipe it up with a soft worn out T-shirt. Paper towels aren't all paper and will scratch the surface. A lens cloth will work great, rubbing lightly at a high speed for a few seconds.

The paint didn't affect the fit at all. I did dry fit the tube just to be safe. I forgot to scuff it but will in the future. I have used this particular blank many times and the painted tube really deepened the color. It was defiantly worth the extra step of painting. Regards, Bob

beautiful pen and great videos, one question, since i am new at this it seems that when you do acrylic you dont need to seal the blank, the plastic polish does that act like a sealant?
@RJBWoodTurner9 жыл бұрын
The plastic polish removes any remaining very fine scratches from the blank and makes it shine. The acrylics don't really need to be sealed. Acrylic is a type of plastic so water will not harm it. I hope this answers your question. Regards, Bob
